Zadar to handle a million passengers in 2020

Zadar Airport projects it will handle over a million passengers in 2020, making it the fourth in the country to do so within a single year, following Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik. “Having welcomed 800.000 travellers in 2019 is a big achievement for us. It is a milestone. However, new records will be broken in 2020”, the airport’s General Manager, Josip Klišmanić, said. He added, “During our first fifty years of operations we handled under a million passengers annually. This will no longer be the case in 2020”. Last year, Zadar Airport welcomed 801.347 travellers through its doors and added an extra 197.308 passengers on 2018.

Ryanair’s subsidiary Lauda  will drive Zadar’s growth in 2020. It will base three aircraft in the city over the summer and launch almost a dozen new routes. The Ryanair Group estimates it will increase its passenger traffic at Zadar Airport by 50% to some 672.000 travellers. “We are delighted to launch our Zadar summer 2020 schedule, operated by a new Lauda base, as part of our commitment to growing Croatian traffic, jobs and tourism. Our Zadar summer 2020 schedule features 31 routes in total, including eleven new routes, which will deliver 672.000 customers per annum and support more than 500 jobs at Zadar Airport”, Ryanair’s Chief Executive, Eddie Wilson, said. Furthermore, Austrian Airlines, SAS Scandinavian Airlines, Jet2 and easyJet will commence new services to the seaside city this year.

Zadar Airport is expected to begin construction of its new terminal during 2020, valued at fifty million euros, as a result of the considerable growth in traffic. The airport plans to finance the project from of its own funds. “The 2020 summer season schedule justifies our efforts to expand capacities at Zadar Airport, which will result in an increase in the level of service and create preconditions for further growth”, General Manager Klišmanić said. The airport also plans to extend its runway and expand its apron, however, it currently has insufficient funds to do so. According to Mr Klišmanić, the airport will seek financing from the European Union or find other means in order to fund the project.

Who cares? As long as it brings money on an annual basis they can do whatever they want over the winter. Croatian coast will never have any significant number of visitors over the winter period thus it makes no sense to focus on that part of the year. From April till November is the period where it makes sense to focus on as it follows the travel patterns in EU which is by far the most important market for Croatian tourism.

You can fly out of Dubrovnik to London directly during the winter by British Airways .Same thing is w the Zagreb Airport. Croatia got over 400K passengers per month during the winter months, so what was ur point?

ZAD should try to attract some legacy carriers, as well, the way DBV does!

IB will be sending the A330 on four flights to DBV, two in April and two in September, I guess this is cruise traffic, same way they send the A346 to ATH in summer.

Unbelievable story! The Croatian coast is extremely booming.
BWK will be next once they upgrade their terminal and such.
As for ZAD it is time to negotiate for ATL. I have read elsewhere the need and demand for those flights. Americans want to try something new and not only Caribbean countries. ZAD has beaches but most importantly culture, monuments and much more. Lets hope DL begins those flights.

If Split wasn't struggling with capacity, I think Lauda would have opened a base there instead.

      Delete
    8. Anonymous15:07

SPU will continue to struggle with capacity for another 5 years at least thanks to its "capable" management. Till then other airports in the neighbourhood will already establish themselves, ZAD in particular and "proći će baba s kolačima".

    1. Until a few yrs ago there were some charter flights btwn Zadar and Moscow. Zadar area has limited hotel capacity to have major tour operators interested. Russian demand could be satisfied for the time being via BEG if AS had better and frequent flights to ZAD.
