Korean Air has extended the suspension of its seasonal three weekly service between Seoul and Zagreb until June 2. Flights were initially due to commence on March 31 but were cancelled until April 23 due to the effects of the coronavirus Covid-19. The Korean carrier has now prolonged the suspension until early June. South Korea has been one of the hardest hit countries outside of China by the coronavirus, which has spread to more than ninety nations. However, the rate of infection is showing signs of slowing in Korea, with the figure dropping to its lowest in ten days on Sunday.

DeleteReal question is how long it will take for the market to recover. This route underperformed even before Corona, the virus, not beer.
DeleteFrishki, because Koreans will not start to travel again like crazy once when corona virus is dead. First of all, Koreans does not have many vacation days per year and many of them are forced to use it right now when there is many cases of covid-19 in Korea. Second, they are planning their trips to Europe (and other regions) in advance, which means that booking for ZAG would be good probably in September and October, and there is no any logical reason to fly to Zagreb empty. Actually, I'm not expecting they will even fly to Zurich, Budapest, Zagreb and Madrid this upcoming season. They should just leave it for the next summer. If not, they will make huge loss and if you google it a bit, u will see that KE is actually in pretty bad shape, which started waaay before corona virus outbreak. This is something what actually can harm the company and send it to history. So no, they would probably not fly to Zagreb this summer season.
DeleteAnon 11.54 u are right, this route was struggling for a while, so this situation is not helping at all. Would not be surprised if they don't come back this year, actually, that would be quite smart move from their side.
DeleteIn that case, they won't start flying everywhere and will just stop the operations altogether. That would end them sooner than trying to salvage as much as possible with special offers.
DeleteTrue, but, there is but....Zagreb is almost exclusive leisure destination in their network, other airports which they serve in the Europe are mix of business, VFR, etc. Zagreb have probably 2 or 3 Korean companies, which is not the case for Madrid, Barcelona, Zurich or, for example, Budapest. From the other side, we should be lucky to have them as regular flight here in Zagreb, not as a charter anymore, since they are serving Athens as a charter (some other airports in the Europe as well). That is ZAG minus and probably the reason why they will not fly here soon. Unfortunately, KE would probably be the first victim of this virus in Croatia.

ReplyDelete2nd of June? That is so a long period to delay flights due to a virus that is expected to wear off once temperature goes up.

DeleteNot surprised one bit 8000 infected and coronovirus is now out of control, by June if there's no treatment, there could be million infected worldwide. Not sure anyone will fly anywhere any time soon, Italy is all but on lockdown, wouldn't surprise me if Italy shuts its borders completely by mid-next week. South Korea might as well do the same once number of infected hits 20 000.

DeleteThe Coronavirus was the catalyst major world economies needed to trigger a global recession. Its unfortunate for the region but we could see a prolonged downturn.
