Nice to see they are expanding in Split. Great addition to the airport with largest number of legacies and lccs in the region. We definitly need ULCC carriers like Wizz and Ryan more expanding here.

Wizzair flew to ZAG, and was chased away. Easyjet as well. Transavia and Ryanair negotiated with ZAG but were not let in. It's not Wizz you should address, it's Markov Trg

How could EU airline get chased away from one airport but not the other airport? Both airports are in the same EU country.

No airport can ban an airline but they can give them an expensive price list.

SPU is getting more and more European destinations to capitals, secondary and tertiary airports. Simply amazing. With no doubt this is the ex-Yu airport with most connections worldwide.

I agree but the only problem is the majority last 2-3 months.

2-3 months? Yes 10 years ago. Now season lasts from 1st of April to 1st of November.

Well they didn't chase them away like that, they just refused to lower their charges. Same reason why other LCCs left ZAG over the years.

It is a bit longer then that, but is quite amazing that one coastal airport in the region of 500.000 people can do even 4 summer months with having more conections and airlines then some in larger areas like LJU, ZAG, PRN, SKP, even BEG in some cases.

Yes but when you compare SPU to other airports that handle holiday traffic they are lagging behind.

Other airports are lagging behind split? I wouldnt say so. Most of medditeranian airports are doing their job quite well.

SPU is connected mainly from May to October but the most unique thing about it is that it connects 5 London airports including LCY, both CDG and ORY. And it seems Volotea are doing quite well increasing more destinations. It would be interesting to see more Polish presence

What's so strange about it? It's a holiday destination that has most of its passengers packed in a few months of the year so there is spillover effect. Croatian airports, ZAG included, have not done much to fight seasonality though. Winter is still brutal.

Why couldn't OU operate this? A319 seems like the perfect plane.

Well i doubt airports can do anything if local tourist organizations are just doing nothing. Here is example from Split. Local tourist oragnization says how tourism here is seasonal because airlines dont want to fly here during the winter. They never done any kind of subventions to attarct airlines. On other side Split Airport says how seasonality at the airport is big because tourist cannot do here a lot during winter times beacuse people spend thier winter hoidays ususally at home witt familiy or winter destinations. But airport offers dicounts for year round routes.

Maybe the best way forward is for SPU to become the cheap version of ZAG in winter. They could give cheap prices to Wizz.

Is SPU a university town and how are the general services compared to a capital or bigger city look like? Are there various alternatives nearby for people to move in and out during winter? How about the general rail and bus services?

OSI and TZL don't give them. They just want heavy discounts which would make sense in winter.

I don't think so. Poles usually arrive in droves especially in the summer season and in leisure destinations. The A320 is the perfect aircraft and who knows, you might even see an A321-neo upgrade, one of my personal favourites. Looking sleek and modern.

Where are you from? Split is the second biggest city in Croatia, some 200.000 people, metro area over 300.000. Of course it's University center. It has everything big city anywhere in the World has. It is the biggest Croatian sea passenger port, has excellent bus network. Connected by rail as well but generally in Croatia railways are slow and not very much used. And if you ask me , it is better to live in Split than in Zagreb because of relaxed Mediterranean way of life and excellent climate, while city is not so big that you need to spend half of the day travelling to work and back and being under constant stress. And it's applicable to entire Croatian coast, not only Split.

Thanks pozdrav, I asked this on purpose, because there are other coastal or touristic towns that are "tackling" seasonality and becoming year-round destinations. If SPU has all those characteristics then the city municipality or other regions can unite and try to collaborate with a LCC carrier for instance and trying to base an aircraft. There are other cities in Europe who did this and it worked. Good example is VAR which is roughly the size of SPU.

Also, OU is backed by Taxpayer money. Croatian government is quite good at findin ways to inject money into it.
