Low cost carrier Wizz Air will commence operations to Banja Luka from four European cities with two weekly flights each from Dortmund, Basel, Eindhoven and Malmo. Services will begin from June 3. Wizz Air will be the second low cost carrier to serve Banja Luka after Ryanair, which has temporarily suspended all operations to the city until mid May due to the coronavirus pandemic. It also plans to launch a new route to the city from Vienna in June. Wizz Air's entry into Banja Luka will come at the same time Ryanair begins services to Zagreb, from which it will open a base in September.
Banja Luka will become Wizz Air's third destination in Bosnia and Herzegovina after Tuzla and Sarajevo, both of which serve as the airline's base. The low cost carrier will commence operations from Dortmund to Banja Luka on June 3, Basel on June 6, as well as Eindhoven and Malmo on June 7. Tickets are already on sale through the airline's website. As a result, Basel, Eindhoven and Dortmund will be served by Wizz from all three cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, while Malmo will be operated from both Tuzla and Banja Luka.

Banja Luka Airport handled 43.904 passengers in 2020, representing a decrease of 70.7% on the year before. However, this was 3.9% better than we expected by the airport’s management. The airport previously noted, “Prior to the coronavirus crisis we discussed the possibility of an airline opening a base in Banja Luka. We will see what will happen after the pandemic. We also had discussions over the launch of an intercontinental service, and after this situation passes, we hope to resume those talks. A Turkish carrier is also interested in cooperating with Banja Luka Airport. For us, it was important to open up to the world in 2019 and for some flights to begin. We must now seek out new airlines and partners and expand our destination network”.
Wooow, so Wizz Air will fly from 3 airports in Bosnia & Herzegovina! I wasn't expecting that!

DeleteToday it was reported that the EU is working on suspending the ban on non essential travel from the western Balkans. I guess Wizz knew that when they made their plans.

DeleteBravo Banja Luka, ali mislim da je Wizz air trebao izabrati neke druge destinacije, poput Hannovera i Hamburga, jer će iz Sarajeva i Tuzle također letjeti za Dortmund i Eindhoven.

ReplyDeleteGood news, but honestly I doubt in commencement as planned having in mind current state of play with COVID 19 in BiH including the fact that vaccination has hardly even begun in addition to number of deaths per 1M.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget that many from Bosnia have flocked to Serbia to get vaccinated. I read the other day that so far 53.000 foreigners received the vaccine in Serbia. Also healthcare professionals from Srpska were vaccinated in Serbia some 1.5 months ago. Also I am sure once Sputnik starts to be made in Serbia Bosnia will be among the first customers.
DeleteI wouldnt say many in the sense that it would make too much of a significance, I think they estimate that around 5000 Bosnians got vaccinated in Serbia, plus these healthcare workers, lets say it is 10,000 max. That is not really significant on 3 million people. But Bosnia so far has gotten around 170,000 vaccines, plus the upcoming Chinese donation of 50,000, and both Covax and the EU joint procurement that Western Balkans is part of, Bosnia is expected to get additional 200,000 vaccines by June, plus RS is buying directly from Sputnik, so by end of June Bosnia should have around 600,000 vaccines received in total, which is okay-ish.
DeleteSituation in Serbia only started to stabilize as we vaccinated 40% of the population. For example today they tested 14.000+ people and only 2.900 were positive. Numbers are going down. I think Bosnia will be the same. Wouldn't hold my breath until 40%

DeleteEvery airport in Bosnia and Herzegovina is capable of being successful, just look at their locations and number of people living 75-100 km each direction from 4 airports. They can serve citizens properly without relying on single airport, which is often the case in many small countries (like BiH).

Also, I don't understand why people complain when "diaspora" routes get included. What do you expect, Banja Luka - Lisbon, Banja Luka - New York??
