Air Serbia plans second A330 and at least two new long haul routes

Air Serbia will lease a second Airbus A330 aircraft and launch at least two new long haul destinations, one in North America and another in Asia. Serbia’s President, Aleksandar Vučić, confirmed the airline is in advanced stages of planning the new routes. The comments came following talks between Mr Vučić and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, in Beijing. “After almost five years of hard work, the service to New York is finally profitable. Now we want to increase frequencies on that route and introduce another destination in North America, either Toronto or Chicago. Due diligence is being carried out and a business plan is being drafted, so we can gauge interest”.

Commenting on services to Asia, Mr Vučić said, “We are initially planning one route to China, which would increase to two. We are talking about Belgrade - Shanghai and Belgrade - Beijing. I believe we can be successful in this pursuit. Of course, we are seeking certain discounts and incentives from the Chinese side, in terms of airport fees and taxes. If all this is achieved, we are getting another A330 and launching these routes this year. Mr Xi is supportive of our plans and has already taken it up with his advisors. We believe that flights to China will become profitable earlier than was the case with New York. These services will further improve business ties between the two countries and bring more Chinese tourists to Serbia. We are the only country in the region whose airline offers nonstop flights to New York. After five years it became profitable, and this is a big achievement for a small airline such as Air Serbia”.

As previously reported, during the pre-pandemic 2019, China (excluding Hong Kong) was the largest long haul market from Serbia based on OAG data, just outperforming the United States, which was followed by Canada. Shanghai and Beijing were Belgrade Airport’s two busiest unserved routes in 2019. That year, a total of 62.526 passengers flew indirectly between Serbia’s capital and China’s largest city, while a further 52.289 travelled indirectly between Belgrade and Beijing on a single itinerary. Despite the coronavirus pandemic, Shanghai was still Belgrade Airport’s busiest unserved destination in 2020, while Beijing came fourth, falling behind Toronto and Chicago. There is also believed to be notable cargo demand between the two countries.

      I mean guys, what is this? I really don't understand purpose of such statements. There is no dates, nothing is official. They spoke about additional A330 even for this year. Other airlines would just give you the starting date.

      The Balkan Diaspora is huge in Chicago and Toronto. If Air Serbia's prices are 10-20% less than AF, KLM, Lufthansa etc. then it can work.

      Albanians proved to be the most loyal customers on BEG-JFK route so YYZ would probably be the same.

      I agree with paying more for nonstop. I fly the JFK-BEG route and it is generally more expensive that going through SVO or IST with a layover. The ability to board one flight and get to your destination and save many hours in layover airports has its value. Just ask yourself, “What is my time worth” and you can make the determination of whether the extra money is worth it. Also you get 2 suitcases on the JU500/JU501 flights while other airlines only give you 1.

      YYZ is cheaper thar JFK but still high up there. Landing fee is 17$ CAD per tonne of aircraft's MTOW, so for an A330 of 242 t it would be approx. $4,100 CAD per flight. One cheaper J class ticket would cover all of that :-)

      It should be Chicago: historic diaspora community + more recent wave. Plus, these comparisons of Chicago and Toronto miss a larger point. Midwest US is where so many ex-Yugo people live not just in the city of Chicago itself, but within 3 hour drive. They all fly out of different regional airports and then connect with United, Lufthansa, Swiss, etc. in a variety of different cities. But many would drive to Chicago for direct and cheaper options.

    Another long haul won't make profit quickly and in the middle of the (hopefully) ending of the pandemic they don't need another cash burden.

      JFK performed better as alot of travel via EU hubs was not possible. However, winter frequencies haven't increased, which I think is important for further expansion. It's surprising that after 5 years they are still operating 2 pw in the winter to JFK.

      I'm just being cautious, they are getting rid of Etihad era planes. Getting newer ones, hopefully at better prices.
      Unless government will give the money for the first few years of lease this might just slow down excellent natural growth YU has been working on during the pandemic.

      I'm all for long haul, get a A350 and fly me to Sydney. But don't bite of more then you can chew.

      Now is the time when Air Serbia should give long haul a go. OU is stagnating, there are tens of thousands of Balkaners itching to come 'home' for a visit, and lease rates are relatively favourable. Combine this with a very decent Euro-Med network, and an excellent Balkan network. However frequencies should be improved in the Balkans, and a few new destinations added.

      BTW, it is JU, not YU.

      I do agree with you on most points, especially the lease rates on wide-bodies.
      But those planes need to work year-round to make money.
      And I'm not sure if JU can keep it up.

      In Croatia, everything is coming from sredisnjica HDZ-a as well, but there is no news at all on field of aviation. Just compare the two. I am not fan of Serbian politicians, or politicians generally, on the contrary, but results of civil aviation in Serbia are amazing and incomparably better then croatian counterpart, despite croatian flag carrier has alliance membership, better political position, has much much much more tourists and about equal diaspora, even geographical position better or the same for transferring between the Balkans and W and N Europe and N America. So, whatever is ordered from Andricev venac concerning Air Serbia, it deserves respect and congratulations

      With FR going wild in ZAG there is no chance for them to recover from this. They lack a large number of transfers to compensate for the loss of O&D that migrated to FR. I mean for the first time ever OU is sending Q400 to CDG! It means they probably carry 40 to 50 passengers to Paris!

      Umm maybe that you need to be vaccinated to enter either country. Or that you need to also do a test before traveling to either country, that the issuing of visas to enter either country has been significantly slowed. Just those few pesky things.

      Entry requirements exist for other 50 or so destinations Air Serbia files to. Dozens of international airlines fly to Chicago and Toronto. If they can figure it out Air Serbia can too. Visa and pandemic requirements change all the time.

      It's not the 1980's. Technology has advanced and so has aircraft range. People also have options and transit pax are not easily motivated with 2 stops.

      Alot has changed in the sense that alot less people are traveling, the overall global travel market is no where near full recovery while more and more people are booking last minute, making it difficult for airlines to predict loads. 1 thing is flexibility with current capacity, short haul is easier to play around with, long haul not so much. Expensive investment that needs time to produce results.

      Canada has one the worst travel restrictions and their regime is very much Controlling every citizen leaving that country. Most parents have chosen not to Vax kids and therefore many families are not able to leave Canada as they must have vaccine to exit . I am more then happy that our gouvermant is involved in such a talks as we can see what happened to many airlines stopping YYZ or relocating to YUL instead. AS started JFK operation at the right time however at that time everything was extremely pricey and they were well aware it would take 3-5 years to be profitable on such a market. Lots have changed like someone mentioned on here and they were smart to delay adding additional 330.

      Keep in mind they reduced their handling costs in New York by relocating terminals and negotiating better terms. They also significantly reduced aircraft lease cost after getting rid of Etihad and its expensive YU-ARA lease.

      Not as significant as the first. You already have crew and pilots trained, experience in dealing with these flights and passengers, a sales network in the US if they want to launch a new routes in the US and so on.

    They could have leased a second A330 for this summer and launched flights to Chicago plus one off charters to places like Zanzibar, Maldives, Seychelles in cooperation with tour operators, which are now in high demand. Use the plane to do the cargo flights to China as well and eventually as the world opens up launch new flights to China and Canada.

      I doubt. It'easier to try long haul in October, with one A330 to JFK, YYZ and PEK 2 x pw for example, when Covid ends, and if it works, to lease another jet for summer '23

      Government owns majority stake yes, but as far as I know, AS has its own management and CEO, and president of country or ministers aren't in any of those positions. Imagine if Angela Merkel was announcing every aircraft that Lufthansa bought. It would be a joke.

      Mehaničar you are comparing Germany and Serbia ? In Serbia we have to fighr for every single destination and invest soo much work .. LH not the case, it get served to them . I am proud they are involved and not letting AS hanging like most balkan countries did and we can see how they are doing now. This work is being on the table for years. Has nothing to do with any electronics as who votes for someone bcs they start flying to Toronto. Kind of ridiculous.

    but to me the biggest surprise is profitability of BEG-JFK. the route profitability probably has a subsidies correction item

    also, if someone from serbian goverment is reading this - please agree with aliexpress to allow packages of >5$ worth to have free shipment. this will unleash GDP growth potential

      I would be much happier if OU had scheduled services to North America and the Far East, than having Air Canada and Korean Air in Zagreb or United or Delta in Dubrovnik. Of course perfect would be to have both, but in my opinion you shouldn't be unhappy with JU adding more long haul instead foreign airlines

    I have been saying for months that there would be flights to Toronto, Chicago, and China this year. Even if Chicago is picked over Toronto, Air Canada may choose to fly to BEG. Either way, as much as I hate state subsidized carriers, AS is doing good.

      No, I am telling it's better for Serbian economy and Balkan travellers that Air Serbia operates Toronto, not Air Canada. And as YYZ is limited to twice weekly by bilateralls, there is space to operate both YYZ (alternatively ORD), and one Chinese destination, as announced

      They have an interline with AA and B6 but connectivity isn't the best because they need more 07.45 departures from Belgrade. The later ones arrive too late to JFK to catch all the connections.

      I think they gave up on finding a partner there and are now focused on their own flights and connections in Belgrade.
