Croatia Airlines has said it has begun preparations to commence negotiations with suppliers for the use of low-carbon sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which EU lawmakers plan to make mandatory for carriers inside the bloc from 2024. Earlier this year, Croatia Airlines, along with almost twenty of its counterparts, argued that the European Union’s plans for stricter rules on CO2 emissions and the use of synthetic fuel blends, as well as the implementation of a kerosene tax, will make them uncompetitive. “SAF is already much more expensive than fossil jet fuel and expectations are there won’t be enough SAF on the market, nor will it be available at all airports. Therefore, major airlines are already finalising agreements with suppliers. Considering the obligation to use SAF from 2024, Croatia Airlines has also begun preparations for talks with potential suppliers. The phase out of free emission allowances for the aviation sector and the requirement to use SAF will represent an additional blow to airlines with costs to rise by the millions”, the Croatian carrier said.

DeleteFlying is one of the most polluting human activities and yes, flying is privillege. It should be reduced substantially untill low or zero emmission (also during fuel manufacturing) becomes everyday reality.

DeleteIt's a good tool to limit air travel and to probably remove small airlines from the market as at the end just the big players will be able to afford all the extra costs. Same as the poor part of the society will be able to travel less and less.
DeleteOil and Gas prices last 25 years were during certain periods higher on the global market, still the enduser had never to pay prices that high, he is paying now. Result of this, energy companies have made huge profits in Q1 nad 2 of 2022, compared to previous years. The green agenda atm seems to me a tool to increase profits for the companies such as Shell etc on the back of the consumers, rather than be an effective tool to migrigate the pollutant emissions. In Swiss consumer magasins, which are very critical to companies and are rather consumer friendly, we read already that up to 80% of the CO2 compensation funds are not ending in projects to limit pollutant emissions, but rather end up as additional profits for companies offering these compensations.
No, it's the opposite: greed driven business found the way to make people travel/eat/drink(...) more and more at the cost of horrendeus CO2 emissions and polution which will be paid by entire society (inlcuding the poor part of it).

SAF is a mixture, a blend of more than 50% fossil fuel. Energy needed for the process is mostly coming from non-renewable sources. Global and EU SAF manufacturing and distribution capacity is less than 1% of regular jet fuel and won't be capable of quick ramp up. SAF is more greenwashing than real solution.

DeleteFeel a bit bad for CA they can't seem to catch a break, I wonder how much of this actually has to do with EU economic sphere. How is CA supposed to thrive amongst giant like the Lufthansa group?
