Airlines to boost Ljubljana operations this winter


Ljubljana Airport will see its pace of recovery from the coronavirus pandemic and the demise of Adria Airways improve this coming winter season with a number of airlines planning to increase their operations to the Slovenian capital, among which are Turkish Airlines, Swiss, Brussels Airlines, Air Serbia and Flydubai. The Turkish carrier will introduce an additional two weekly flights between Istanbul and Ljubljana starting February 1 of next year for a total of twelve per week. As a result, services will operate each morning, and five times per week during the evening hours. Most of the flights will be maintained with the Airbus A321 aircraft.

Swiss International Air Lines is increasing services from Zurich and plans to maintain nine weekly flights between the two cities, up from seven this summer, with two daily rotations on Mondays and Fridays. The additional frequencies will commence from October 30 of this year. Its Lufthansa Group partner, Brussels Airlines, plans to operate four weekly rotations to the Slovenian capital this winter, up from two last year. Services will run each Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday with the A319 jet. As a result, the Belgian carrier will maintain the same frequencies to Ljubljana as it did this summer season. Unlike last winter, Lufthansa will continue to operate from Munich, complementing its Frankfurt service.

Air Serbia will run double daily flights to the Slovenian capital from the start of winter, up from twelve weekly services. Flydubai will increase operations between Dubai and Ljubljana to daily flights, on the back of the successful launch of the route last September. The daily rotations will commence on December 22 and will continue to run throughout the summer of next year. Until mid-December, the carrier will maintain between three and five weekly flights to the Slovenian capital. In addition, Air Cairo will begin a one weekly rotation from Hurghada to Ljubljana via Skopje, although the inbound service will operate nonstop.

    5. No, he or she doesn't. And he or she seriously underestimates potentials of MK/KS/AL markets. TIA, PRN and SKP are booming. Both OU and JP could have taken advantage of it. But they are good children, they didn't want their Mutti angry and upset. Danke Deutschland!

    Is it me or are LJU and BEG very similar (except their sizes of course). Both have strong outbound demand, strong charter season, a lot of demand for the east, growing demand to Dubai and so on.

    Lot's of overlapping things between the two airports.

      Hahahaha and it's not even 20. Its 13 year round and 3 seasonal destinations. LJU is level of BNX (13 year round and 2 seasonal), TZL (14 year round and 2 seasonal), INI (13 year round and 4 seasonal) and OHD (8 year round and 5 seasonal). Bravo Fraport!

    Will LJU hit the 1 million passenger this year ? ? It is clearly visible that LH has decided to entirely dominate the airport including its LX and SN siblings. No wonder why they never wanted the creation of a new Adria and working closely with Fraport to prevent it. All makes sense now.

      Ljubljana LH Cartel Airport won't reach one million passengers. No way. Cartel is too busy with dominating the airport. LH is dominating in LJU, Fraport owns airport, even the biggest warehouse at the airport is owned by the same guy who has the biggest share in LH. Thats why they are focusing way more on cargo.

      Just a mind experiment:
      In case LH group would stop all their operations to/from LJU, do you think that oneworld or Skyteam or any LCC would add more or better routes and frequencies than LH Group already established? Would you be the first (or the last) to claim, that you would miss the connectivity of a hub like FRA or MUC?
      It is always easy to blame LH or Fraport or the government or somebody else. But I doubt that you would be able to establish sustainable operations on a much bigger size in the actual market environment and especially with the limited catchment area of LJU. LJU is not an isolated island, where you must fly to reach it. It is embedded in an airline/airport environment with some actors (especially airports) acting extremely irrational (=loss-making). Or do you think LH, Fraport, Slovenian government and taxpayers should also not care about revenues just to create "record breaking" passenger numbers?

    EX-YU Aviation forgot to add that easyjet will reduce LGW-LJU from 6 weekly to just 1 weekly in November. Just 5 flights in whole month. LJU keeps on winning!

    Regardless of what the "cartel" guy keeeps on spamming, Ljubljana is recovering slowly but nicely. I find myself using the airport more and more frequently since there are now actually some very affordable connections. In 2022 I used Ljubljana around 50% of the time, the others beeing Venice (40%) and Zagreb (10%). They also managed to transport over 100k passenger each month during summer, so if the trend continues, I'm sure that Ljubljana will be back to pre-Adria numbers in a few years and over 1 million in 2023. There are 15 airlines serving Ljubljana, only 3 of them belong to the LH group, so this constant mantra about LJU preferring the "cartel" airlines is simply not true.

      Yes there are words needed. It's true that Lufthansa currently is the biggest carrier in Ljubljana, nobody is arguing about that. But they are not "dominating" the passenger numbers. In the first 6 months of 2022 they transported just under 60k passengers to Frankfurt all together (that's less than 10k per month), while just in July Ljubljana had over 124k passengers. Lufthansa is still just a small part of the entire offer of the airport.

      120k in whole month. 30k if not more passengers were on charters. LH doesn't care about that. LH also didn't fly to MUC and it they flew with CRJ900 double daily to FRA. In July they flew triple daily FRA/MUC with mostly A319, even with A320. They doubled the numbers, if not more. Also Swiss and Brussels flew to LJU. 120k minus 30k from charters is 90k on scheduled flights. And LH group with 35k passengers per month gives them 40% share. Not so small for "3 airlines" that fly to airport with "15 airlines"

      So 3 airlines with less than 40% of passenger share run the whole airport according to you? Adria always had over 50% of the share - did we have Adria cartel back then? Also look at any other midsized airport - a few top airlines always generate the majority of the traffic, that's just the nature of the business. Anyway, the simple fact is that there are now more airlines using the airport than ever before. And that alone disproves any of the cartel allegations.

    yes, it is the Cartel who doesn't give a flying f for those numbers, they are only interested in feeding the mama airports. Don't forget LH has stake in Fraport and not a small one (8.4 %). Boosting frequencies to the same destinations as before? Thank you. Realy. What about connecting some parts of Europe which are disconnected since demise of Adria, and connecting to some new, highly desirable for some time? And those impressive "recovery" numbers: there are days, where almost half of the traffic are charters. There is no connection to Vienna for instance, to Scandinavia, Iberian penisula...

      Ryanair is always complaining about taxes as a negotiating tactic to get a big discount. If there is no discount they usually don't fly. In Zagreb they goy 75% discount on the service fee for the first year of operations. As far as I know, Ljubljana currently offers "only" 50% discount.

      Even if you paid Ryanair 500€ for each passenger they carry, they would still complain why they do not get 600€ for each passenger. If they would be getting 600€ per passenger, they would ask for 700€ and so on.

    5. Passengers are happy for flying FR for peanuts, to the places they couldn't fly before. Big airports are happy with FR because they have increased volume of passengers and increased income from big number of passengers. Small airports are happy because of FR they are opened and people employed, otherwise they would be close. Families are happy because FR make possible they see which other more often, those not living close by. Tourists workers are happy because FR brings tourists who spend money on the destination. FR is happy for making money itself. Only some individuals here repeatedly spit on FR, not being able to accept that there are people and companies in the World , who know to do the business.
