Maribor welcomed 3.919 passengers in 2022, cementing its position as the least busy commercial airport in the former Yugoslavia. Despite the low figures, it represents an improvement of over 60.9% on the pre-pandemic 2019. The airport has been struggling for over a decade to attract commercial flights and primarily relies on sport charter traffic, with its runway also used for pilot training purposes. Plans for Italian regional carrier Air Alps to commence operations to Maribor last year failed due to poor sales. The Slovenian government recently launched tender procedures, putting the airport up for a ten-year concession. Interested parties have until February 20 to submit their bids. Despite Maribor being Slovenia’s second largest city, its airport is behind both Ljubljana and Portorož in terms of passenger numbers.

ReplyDeleteI think actually MBX had a record this year with aircraft operations (land/takeoff). Because they don't count passengers eaqully as POW they had only 4000pax.
ReplyDeleteWith its geographical location, MBX could have act as a LCC hub for Slovenia, southern Austria, northern Croatia, western Hungary. But they threw this chance away.
