NEWS FLASH

Ryanair has confirmed it is discontinuing its service between Dortmund and Zagreb. The last flight on the route, which is currently maintained twice per week, is planned for March 25. "Of course, we regret this development, but we will continue to offer our customers a wide range of travel destinations in the summer”, Dortmund Airport said in a statement. Ryanair is the third low cost carrier to have discontinued flights between the two cities over the past fifteen years. Both Wizz Air and easyJet, which no longer fly to the Croatian capital, had tried their luck on the route, discontinuing flights in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

What 7? They have 3 planes based in ZAG and no new routes announced for this summer.

If you look the interview from the opening of the base both airport and Ryanair said that they expect up to 8 737 to be based in zagreb by 2023

Relying in inbound traffic isn't going to allow the base to grow, it needs outbound travel too and it is just not happening, the locals have not embraced travel.

Well said!!! And just as mr Pozdrav was claiming how loyal FR is to ZAG hahahah. They will vanish as soon as things start not going their way and find another opportunity.

Exodus with 1 discontinued line? Wow. Strange thinking. I think FR is here to stay and that’s good for everyone. I cannot understand this region. That’s probably why it’s chronically underdeveloped and experiences populational exodus most of the time. Strange part of the world indeed.

Hahahahahahahaha, OU used to fly from ZAG to 30 destinations, today it's 15. And FR introduced over 20 services in an eye blink and discontinued one. But that's more than enough for Criminal Organization Advocate to write about exodus of FR and long live OU. But in real life, we actually see quite opposite - OU in huge exodus from ZAG and FR increasing frequencies to plenty of profitable destinations, without bagging for donations from poor tax payers. And those advocating were obviously missing their Logic classes in high school, if they even made it that high with the education process

All the eggs in one basket is the phrase used when an airport has one operator only, usually LCC and usually Ryan or Wizz. How can you say all the eggs in one basket for an airport served by 25 airlines from 3 continents, legacy and LCC?

Something strange is going on with Dortmund Airport. They suddenly will also lose Riga, Plovdiv, Vienna and now Zagreb. Maybe it has got to do with demand or more people opting for Cologne instead.

Croatians are "smart", they would rather drive >18h by bus to Dortmund than fly <2h just to save 5 Euro.

Croatians mostly live and work in southern part, Munich and Stuttgart. It's 6-7 hours by car from Zagreb, on full profile highway, with no borders. People generally could be subdivided into two groups, smart, and stupid. There are Croatians belonging to both groups, smart and stupid. But the person who generalizes things that much to call an entire nation "smart", definitely belongs to the second group, stupid, no matter what his or her ethnicity is.

I don't know about the rest of the x-YU, but I feel like there is still this lingering mystification around flying for a lot of Croatians - bordering some kind of a subconscious superstitious aversion. As if it's something you do only if you go to Australia or Canada and the idea that it's just "more safe and secure to be on the ground" type thing. Most of Germany is still in the zone that is for most part still very reachable with 7:00 to 17:00 range so that's just the default. There is very little interest for Mediterranean Europe "Sta cu tamo kad imamo isto i jos lijepse kod nas" and our diaspora is almost totally concentrated in Germany and now a bit in Ireland. Croats seem to like travelling to Prague but again that's busable. When it comes to increasing outbound travel the only potential I could see if direct US - Croatia flights.

Many Croatians own a holiday house or apartment at the coast or have family members or friends who own one. They usually travel to the coast by car or bus. These people have easy access to an accomodation and are used to a certain town / region / island. They will rarely travel to other countries for spending their summer holidays. When it comes to winter holidays, the average Croatian goes skiing to Slovenia, Austria, Italy, Bosnia where he also travels by car or bus.
