NEWS FLASH

Low cost carrier Ryanair will restore seasonal operations between London Stansted and Osijek following a six-year hiatus. It will mark the third time the airline has attempted to maintain operations to the airport. According to the UK airline schedule analyst SeanM, the budget carrier will run two weekly summer-only operations from June 2, each Monday and Friday. Tickets are due to go on sale shortly. Ryanair abruptly suspended operations between London Stansted and Osijek in January 2017 after the Croatian airport refused to provide subsidies in the form of advertising concessions to the airline. The route was Ryanair’s only year-round service to Croatia at the time. It was initially maintained seasonally from 2013 until 2016 before being extended into the winter months. Further flight details for the renewed Stansted - Osijek service can be found here.

Unfortunately Slavonija is getting emptier and emptier but at least it will be easier for people to come home and visit their ageing parents. Hopefully OSI-DUB is also introduced in the future.

Yes, I think OSI-DUB makes more sense. Ryanair must know something we don't.

It really is astonishing how much population Slavonija is losing. I remember from my old school days how Osijek was quite a lot bigger than Maribor in YU. Now Maribor has a larger population than Osijek. But like the person above said, at least now it will be easier for the people abroad to visit their families.

Not true. In Osijek and the surrounding area many young people returned and are investing in real estate and business. Easy to see, there are literally hundreds of new flats under construction and the price hit all time record. Covidbplayed a major role in this, of course.

Not true? Well, that’s a bit of an exaggeration. Osijek had almost 130,000 people living there at the end of YU. Now there are less than 100k. Perhaps young people are returning, and good if they are! But I live near a major Balkan-Germany motorway and there are busloads of young people still emigrating daily with buses bearing OSI plates. Doesn’t seem like many buses are going back though.

OSI has quite a big catchment area, ryanair could attract a lot of passengers from eastern Croatia, northern Bosnia, southern Hungary and Vojvodina. Hopefully the route will do well and they will expand with DUB, EIN etc.
