EU approves Slovenian airline route subsidies

NEWS FLASH

The European Commission has approved the Slovenian government’s plan to subsidise certain air routes from the country, most of which are currently unserved. Ten destinations are being prioritised with 16.8 million euros having been made available over the next three years. The state will initially provide funds for flights from one of three of Slovenia’s commercial airports to Vienna, Copenhagen, Athens, Madrid, Amsterdam, Helsinki, Charleroi, Skopje, Prague and Berlin. If any funds remain available after the call, they will be made available in subsidies to carriers flying to Rome, Stockholm, Oslo, Barcelona, Lisbon, Pristina and Paris. The government has said it will launch tender procedures as soon as possible in order to select the operating carriers. Once the public call is issued, it will be open for thirty days.

Vienna - Austrian, Copenhagen - SAS (crj) or Norwegian (less likely), Athens (Aegean adding 3rd weekly flight), Madrid (Iberia), Amsterdam (hopefully KLM with e-90s), Helsinki (Finnair), Charleroi (Wizz), Skopje (Wizz), Prague (smartwings only has 737s, so maybe Amelia?) and Berlin (Easyjet)

Seems like Ryanair won't come judging by the list of destinations?

why not Ryanair? VIE,BER,CPH,CLR,MAD,PRG,HEL,ATH are FR destinations....

what is against Ryanair is the prereq of flying the route after subsidies end for the same amount of time. Im sure they won't like this

Macedonia have the same rule btw and we saw today Wizz applied.

What does that mean for Helsinki and Athens routes which are already scheduled to be operated very soon? And Amsterdam who is already operated by Transavia?

Only new routes allowed. So ATH, AMS are only eligible for subsidies after October/ November.

That ammount with desired routes means meridian subsidy in range of 300k per route, of which 100% goes to Fraport (only ground services are being subsidized). I wonder who will bite this sour apple :)

It does not prevent airliners to negotiate with FRAPORT for affordable conditions (discounts) and then apply subsidy on top of that.

Artcle 7 speaks volumes and is 100% in line with what I said. Airlines negotiating with Fraport. Are you kidding me?
