NEWS FLASH

Lufthansa introduced flights between Frankfurt and Skopje yesterday, with the airline to maintain ten weekly rotations between the two cities with a mix of Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft. The airline will maintain services to the Macedonian capital alongside group partners Austrian Airlines and Edelweiss Air. Commenting on the new service, the General Manager of airport operator TAV Macedonia, Metin Batak, said, “Lufthansa’s Frankfurt - Skopje route is important for the Macedonian diaspora, for those traveling for business purposes, as well as for tourism and leisure. Additionally, it’ll give new options for cargo transport, as Germany is North Macedonia’s main trade partner. We are confident that Lufthansa’s presence will add a new value for all travellers from Skopje Airport”. Lufthansa noted, “The flights are scheduled to be attractive for both business travellers and tourists. Lufthansa is strengthening its position in Eastern Europe by adding Skopje”. The Macedonian government will subsidise the service by providing seven euros for each departing passenger on the route over the next three years.

It is surreal that Lufthansa did not serve Skopje until 2023. I expect the route will be a big success.

LH did not fly to SKP, but there was nonetheless a direct flight between FRA and SKP in the early 2000s. It was with a carrier called Cirrus Airlines. I flew with them regularly between 2005-2006. It was A320 if i remember correctly.

LH never flew to OHD, its a mystake.
But so the information that they started SKP for the first time. Between 1991-2001 LH mainline was flying from MUC to SKP with Jumbolinos. Between 2003-2005 Cirrus Airlines (a partner of LH at that time) was flying to SKP daily and the flights were discontinued because Cirrus went bankrupt although SKP flights were always fully packed with transfers. They flew with Embraers but had a very bad reputation as flights were always heavily delayed. In one occassion the former foreign Minister of Macedonia has missed a very important meeting in Brussels because of them and as a consequence she urged Macedonian CAA to revoke its flying liscence.

On Saturday afternoon Cirrus was flying FRA-OHD via SKP while on Sun morning the flight was returning to FRA as OHD-FRA via SKP.

I also remember the incident with Ilinka Mitreva (RIP). And indeed, soon thereafter they stopped flying to Skopje.
I didn't fly much at that time, and not sure if it was a Cirrus issue, or the era of online ticketing was simply not born yet around 2004-5, but if you wanted to buy a ticket with Cirrus, you actually had to go to their counter at Frankfurt Airport and buy a ticket.

Back then airlines offered so called ethnic fares to migrants but you could only get them in their offices. We also used to go to the Adria office in Munich for tickets to SKP.

So basically, we will be seeing LH in SKP until 2026 for the time being...

What do you find "hateful" about the comment when it is written in the article? Each time someone expresses something different here regarding SKP, it's always about being taken as an offence or making drama for nothing. 3 years is a good time and will allow the route to mature and it is yet to be determined what happens after the contract ends in 2026.

7€ are more then symbolic. If somebody think these 7€ can change something hurry up and create an airline. LH took them when founding out they could apply for them (they announced the route before the tender was out). If you think LH depends on the 7€, lol

@16.06 "expresses something different here regarding SKP" aka wishing them to fail. It began with the first stationed aircraft from Wizz.

With almost every conceivable city and village airport in Germany covered by Wizz Air and a very high number of direct routes too, it's an unusual time for LH to launch this route.

To succeed they will hurt TK/OS/LO and possibly delay further resumption of QR and FZ. Would be happy to be proved wrong and see all these airlines flourish.

You are missing one important point: The network-airlines traffic at SKP is also increasing despite all those direct routes. Should LH let others take it?

LH was never going let OS increase their presence at SKP to more then their double daily

20:39 anon, LH and WIZZ is completely different market. Wizz is all the Macedonias, Albanians and people from Kosovo that are on "temporary" aka permanent stay/work in Germany. Or cheaper/better.
LH is all the connection around the world, especialy Nort, central and south America, anywhere in Europe that wizz doesn't fly from SKP, bussines, politicians etc.

    It's basicly one stop SKP-FRA-Anywhere.
I understand all the village airports in Germany but Wizz doesn't fly to LA, San Francisco, Miami, Tampa, Vancouver, Detroit, Carribean etc, so people cannot connect In Frankfurt Hann 😃

So I'll assume that you never experinced the hastle of flight with 2 stops from SKP 😃
