Qatar Airways deploys Dreamliner to Belgrade

NEWS FLASH

Qatar Airways is utilising a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner on its service between Doha and Belgrade today as a one-off. It represents an upgrade on its usual Airbus A320 equipment and marks the first time the airline has used a wide-body aircraft on its Belgrade flight since the 2022 FIFA World Cup last November and December. Qatar Airways’ B787-8s have the capacity to seat 254 passengers, of which 22 in business class and the remaining 232 in economy. As of this week, Qatar Airways is operating daily flights between the two capital cities. It plans to maintain a daily service during the upcoming 2023/24 winter season as well.

Hopefully this is an experiment to see how much they’d be able to fill up a wide body to BEG. An upgrade is really needed. These flights are becoming crazily full especially during summer

I wonder was there so much demand for this huge upgrade or was it something else?

Anon 14:44 Why are you surprised there is a 200+ daily passengers from a 2 million city/ 6 million catchment area to one of the biggest hubs in Asia?

There are 2 reasons for travel business and pleasure (holiday/ diaspora). There is no serbian diaspora in qatar as far as im aware of. or significant serbian diaspora in asia that would be constantly using Doha as a hub to reach belgrade. also rich arabs prefer to holiday in western europe than eastern europe. as for business, i know serbia has some business dealing and trade with qatari, there is some investment from qatari in belgrade, but not enough to fill planes for daily travel.
qatar also has daily flights to zagreb,
considering all of this is why i am surprised

Entire Serbian diaspora in Australia uses QR. Most Serbian tour operators use QR for Asia and Africa. QR had 10 weekly flight during height of summer to Belgrade before covid. I'm surprised how many people are bothered that QR flies to BEG and successfully for many years.

If a class is called business, it doesn't mean it is used by businessman only! Even more, companies are usually not allowing business class to their employees except for the top management so this class is actually mainly used by rich who can afford it.

@anon 20:24 I work in corporate travel and companies are returning to pre covid status and reopening business class to their travelers. Economy class is mostly what tech companies are still travelling in and everyone else does business class or premium economy. QR market is connections so they have business at high capacity on a daily basis.

Anon 20:09 since it has 1,681,405 residents according to the 2022 census, 200K foreigners registered or unregistered and since Pančevo's 100K don't have another airport but BEG. Add some tourist & diaspora to that. You do the math.

Also QR has a lot of Serbian staff that frequently travels between DOH and BEG. I used to fly QR on stand by and too many times I had to fly to DOH from BUD as planes from BEG were full.

Passed by the airport about an hour ago and it was parked next to Pupin. The whole airport looked quite nice with two widebody aircraft and a few smaller ones.

I think QR should upgrade to 787, this plane pefectly fits the current needs. Hopefully the codeshare with AS will push this upgrade sooner.

And yes, Qatar Airways did fly bigger than A320s. It operated daily A321 flights to Belgrade year round from 2018 until March 2020 (Covid).

Well, don't forget that unlike in some other regional markets, Qatar faces quite a bit of competition in Belgrade.
There are double daily flights by FZ, five weekly to AUH with Wizz and soon we are getting direct flights to KWI.

It also doesn't help them that JU and TK offer up to 6 daily flights between BEG and IST.

QR does fly daily and we saw some of their 330s on BEG. Planes to/from BEG are full most of the time - lots of QR staff are from Serbia, more and more Serbs move to Gulf countries, then there is Australian diaspora, Asian countries as cheap and popular travel destinations, and above all - QR is on another level of service compared to competition so every frequent flyer would choose them over any other airline.
