Aegean Airlines has said it wants to continue expanding in the region following the launch of its fifth-freedom flights between Skopje and Sarajevo this Monday. Speaking at the ceremony marking the inaugural flight between the two cities, the Greek carrier’s Chief Commercial Officer, Roland Jaggi, said, “We wish to increase connectivity and expand our presence in the Balkan area. With our high-quality services, we wish to promote interstate mobility, promote tourism and strengthen trade relationships. We will continue developing our network and offer new connectivity opportunities in the region”.
Skopje is firmly on Aegean’s radar. Apart from introducing the three-weekly service to Sarajevo, the Greek carrier has doubled its frequencies to the Macedonian capital from three to six per week, leaving three of its weekly rotations on the route with a ten-hour turnaround time between the outbound and inbound service, enabling it to introduce additional flights in-between. Potential additions, if Aegean seeks to introduce more destinations from Skopje, include the likes of Podgorica and Sofia, with the Macedonian government recently negotiating with its counterparts from both Montenegro and Bulgaria over potential services. Aegean Airlines applied for the Macedonian government's subsidy program for the introduction of new routes from Skopje earlier this year but pulled out after the tender was declared void.
Aegean expanded its operations throughout the former Yugoslavia this year. It introduced seasonal flights between Athens and Ljubljana, which will run until October 13, as well as regular weekly summer charters from the Greek capital to Banja Luka. In addition, the airline upgraded capacity on its Athens - Podgorica flights from the ATR72-600 turboprop to the Airbus A320 over the peak summer months. Furthermore, Aegean has extended its seasonal Athens - Zagreb flights until early January, with services to be maintained throughout November and December, and again from early March of next year. For 2024, the carrier plans to increase operations between Athens and Belgrade from five weekly to daily with its A320 fleet, starting June 2.
Interesting. Seems like Skopje will be their point of expansion in the region
ReplyDeleteIt would be nice if they added SKP-LCA.
DeleteThey expanded almost everywhere they already fly to. So I do not understand what "point of expansion" means?
Deleteprobably means routes that are not ATH
Deletewow, the added single route just becase SJJ is weak market to maintain direct flights to ATH
Delete^ more is to come.
DeleteAlso these flights have nothing to do with Athens. If they did, they would not subject Sarajevo passengers to wait four hours in Skopje on the inbound service.
DeleteThat is incorrect. A3 offers SJJ-ATH via SKP
DeleteI’ve travelled with Aegean many times and their Airbuses are well maintained, their pilots are great and their inflight staff are always friendly, smiling, helpful and able to speak languages fluently. Plus if you look carefully you can always find good prices. This makes Athens the perfect hub for the Balkans and indeed key European destinations. Well done Aegean, thank you.
DeleteNow they will fly to Dubai a lot of people from Balkans will fly to DXB with them.
Deletecomputer says nah
Deletetheir flight from DXB arrives at 21.45 in ATH
Their ATH-DXB route is meant for point to point travel.
DeleteThe market is big eough.
In the region TIA is Aegean strongest marke
DeleteTIA, BEG, OTP, SOF all performing amazing
DeleteGood luck! These sort of ventures usually never work out.
ReplyDeleteNo reason not to work as they're getting money for these flights.
Deleteany proof to both?
DeleteIt was reported that both governments signed an agreement to find an airline to start subsidized flights.
Deleteyes but none authorities were present at the ceremony
DeleteThe CCO thanked TAV 10 times for their support with this route.
Deletebut TAV is not the gov
DeleteHope they can make it work in this region.
ReplyDeleteExcellent news
ReplyDeleteI doubt they will keep their plane in Skopje for hours on the other flights. I expect they will add something.
ReplyDelete+1
DeleteCroatia airlines plane is parkerd 5-6 hours in Skopje, Lufthansa is parked 8,5 hours and Austrian is parked for 4 hours in Skopje and Aegean 6,5 hours. The planes land in SKP between 10 and 12 in the evening and depart the next morning between 4 and 7 o'clock. This could be because ussally most airlines can offer better connections in the morning. But pilots and crew also need rest. Especially if they already had a roatation that day.
Deletecrews have a layover its not always the same crew starting again in the morning
DeleteI hope they will turn their Ljubljana flights to year round ops.
ReplyDeleteFrom 2024…
DeleteI hope we see Aegean add some routes from Thessaloniki to ex-Yu cities next. I know they fly seasonally SKG-DBV but it would be nice if we see some more.
ReplyDeleteThey don't fly SKG-DBV
DeleteIt’s in their plans for years and they will introduce those flights sooner or later.
DeleteAegean is a really interesting airline that has been growing like crazy. It was only a matter of time before they looked at ex-Yu in more detail..
ReplyDeleteHow many aircraft and routes does they have it?
Delete165 destinations they recently announced Dubai as their new destination.
DeleteAegean airlines : 60 airplanes , a320/321ceo=32 , a320/321 neo =28 . Olympic air : 10 atr 72-600 , 3 atr 42-600 , 2 DH-8-100. And 1 learjet. For Aegean 9 neos will come in 2024, 5 in 2025 and 4 in 2026 . And they also have 12 neos option.
DeleteApparently you are wrong Aegean has 76 aircraft in total. source: https://news.gtp.gr/2023/10/02/aegean-announces-largest-ever-winter-schedule-adds-new-routes-for-2023-2024/
Delete@anonymous 15:42 look closely . Aegean : 60 + Olympic : 15 + the learjet = 76 . Go to their website and you will understand . Oh and they have 51% stake of animawings with 2 airplanes.
DeleteI don't understand their interest to be honest. I doubt they can make money on routes like Skopje-Sarajevo. Just a waste of resources.
ReplyDeleteLet's see if this route will be around this time next year. I hope it will but I'm not so certain.
Deleteit was among Sarajevos top unserved routes
DeleteSkopje was one of Sarajevo's top unserved routes? Are you sure? Sarajevo which has almost no flights to any main European capita?
Delete*capital
Deleteit was reported by this blog
DeleteNo, it didn't
Deletehttps://www.exyuaviation.com/p/sarajevo-airports-top-unserved-routes.html
and something like top 5 OU transfer markets from SJJ
Deleteboth cities had 4524 indirect passenger traffic in 2019a nd thats a solid base to start.
Deletedirect traffic always exceeds indirect traffic
If they will add code share with Scoot (SQ) it could be a good alternative for AU. There is a large expat community of Macedonians downunder.
Delete15:20 I don't think there is much interest in flying a budget carrier on the first leg of such a long trip. If Singapore Airlines returned to Athens that would work since they're already aligned, but Singapore already fly to Istanbul which ties into Turkish Airlines and Turkish Airlines themselves will also fly to Australia next year so I think it's hard to compete with Istanbul for a 2 stop route from Australia to Macedonia.
DeleteSkopje - Sofia is economicly not good , but if you get money from the country then is ok.. More realistic and what we need is connecting us with Tivat not podgorica but as I said when they giwe you money for why not... If they connect us with those two cities then SKP will be pretty much good connected to all region here.
ReplyDeleteWhat about SKP - TIA as potential route?
DeleteI thought his statement was very interesting indeed
ReplyDeleteWhich one?
DeleteThe ATH - SKP - SJJ connection isn't that bad actually with just 1h waiting time, it's the return that is awful with 6 hours. Maybe they will make some changes in the flight schedule next year to offer better transfer times.
ReplyDeleteAlso, flights to PDG or SOF will be great additions. I hope they will add TIA, BUC and some Greek holiday islands next summer too.
I don't think these flights are designed for Athens-Sarajevo-Athens passengers. They really are there for pax flying Skopje-Sarajevo-Skopje.
DeleteBut if you fly from SJJ to ATH and you must transfer, why would you pick this flight with low frequency and not so good return time, if you already have transfer options (daily or even double daily) with Lufthansa, Austrian, Air Serbia etc. I didn't take a closer look, but there are many better options definitely.
Deletetransfer at SKP is stil shorter than at BEG (8.30-9.15 h). the aircraft to ATH departs at 00.45 and arrives in ATH at 3.15
DeleteI think this is all just about economics. Of course you can transfer from somewhere else too if its cheaper or more convenient. The comment was mostly about the flight ATH-SJJ via SKP having a good transfer time, the return is of course shit. In general I think this is route is one of the first in long time that allows you to transfer through SKP. Fingers crossed that Aegean will further grow their presence in SKP and allow better connections and transfers. My hopes are TIA, TIV, OTP and PDG.
DeleteThis could be also a nice wake up call for Air Serbia to maybe station one ATR in SKP and/or OHD in the summer.
I think ATH-SJJ direct flights will be reintroduced in 2024.
Deletesome destinations from SKP suitable for their ATR: TIA, DBV (in summer), OTP https://www.exyuaviation.com/2018/07/macedonia-seeks-romania-flights.html
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, I think this means there is no chance of Sarajevo getting nonstop flights to Athens.
ReplyDeleteThe management could always try and attract Sky Express. But the management has been chasing an unfeasible deal with Jordan Aviation, so I don't hold any hope.
DeleteAegean can operate direct flights to ATH. SKP doesn’t have anything to do that
DeleteAegean is expanding like crazy lately. They are adding a new route every other week. They just announced the launch of Athens-Dubai. Last week they started Baku just last week and Bratislava the week before that.
ReplyDeleteDubai is an interesting choice
DeleteDon't they cooperate with Emirates?
DeleteYes, they do
Deletehttps://www.emirates.com/english/travel-partners/aegean-airlines/
They are doing great ! 12 million passengers on JAN-SEP period . They will definetely reach 16 millions for the whole 2023 .
DeleteAegean used to be interested in Croatia Airlines ownership...
ReplyDeleteTimes long gone
DeleteAnd I still think that Aegean is the only airline in the world that could make something out of Croatia Airlines. They simply know how to work in extremely seasonal market.
Delete^ agree
DeleteAgreed too, Aegean could lift up OU they know exactly what OU needed as they work in the same product. Sad they are not interested anymore but I'm pretty sure they do have more important things to do!
DeleteThere are people in Croatia who could lift up OU but they are NOT ALLOWED to do it because of Brussels aparatchik AP and LH Cartel commissionaire Misetic
Delete1:SKP-Sofia is not what we need(Macedonians) , with car I am in Sofia for 3 hours , relax driving , same amount of time to go with plane , but when country giwes you money for the route then why not , economicly for the airline is far from good...
ReplyDelete2:We dont need flights to Podgorica , we need Tivat which is few km from Budva right , and same when country giwes you money why not do it...
3:What we need really and what Aegan need to do is:CGD , Amsterdam,Munich,Helsinki,Madrid,Prague or some Greek's islands, this is what we really need in this moment.
4:People in Ex-yu are not used to travel across the region with plane , they go car, or buses because all main cities are all connected with bus line and It is way cheaper then go with plane which is so important for all the people living here.
There is alsl more realistic routes what we need from SKP righw now , but as I said when there is money from country why not.
And for end our country need to focus connect us with Europe mains airports , they do it I know but very slow , hope in future that will happend.
Thank you Mr Prime Minister for summarizing what we Macedonians need and don¨t need.
DeleteBtw, many of us respectfully disagree with most of your points.
ahaha when somebody talks as "we" ..
Deletepoint 4: just because you are not used to fly within the region stop talking about the rest ok?
DeleteBEG-MNE and SKP-LJU, ZAG-SPU/DBV should have changed your views by now
09:55 Ok president are you really wants to say that we more need Sofia and Podgorica or even Sarajevo ? And dont need main European cities ??
DeleteDefinitly you should not use internet go chill out somewhere.
@10.04 he had a point tho. I agree with him
DeleteHe had a point but if Aegean wants to launch TGD flights, then why not? Every route is important for the airport to develop and to grow! For you its important CDG, AMS, LHR..for someone else is important Ppdgorica and Sofia. The airport is doing a great job at Skopje and we are going to get flights to Spain soon
DeleteI agree on your with Sofia they did it a a year ago and there was really low demand that's why it was discontinued within a month
DeleteMontenegro would be nice. IDK if there is enough demand in the winter but for the summer it defenitly will work.
Wizz already flies to Paris, Eindhoven( which is like 1,5 hour with public transport from Amsterdam) and also Memmingen(which is 1,5 hours with pulic transport from Munich). I don't think we need Helsinki(would be nice though). Madrid and Prague would be nice but Wizz can launch this better.
@9:47 be more grateful for what we have.
its not really Aegeans job to take you to somebody else's hub (plus a route too long for an ATR and please no OU jokes). They have ATH for that. In general all routes should be welcome and are by most of us
DeleteOU, A3, & JU walk into a pub ...
DeleteAnd then A3 and JU, after few rounds, cheerfully walk out, while OU dropped dead under the table
DeleteEven though it's risky it would be great if they would start BEG-SKG flights, competition cannot hurt. And something slightly wild, such as BEG-PVK.
ReplyDeleteSKP-BEG is too small of demand to divide it between two air carriers.
DeleteSKG= Solun
DeleteSKP= Skopje
Mea culpa.
DeleteAny idea how they performed on Ath-Lju?
ReplyDeletePretty good flights were packed most of the time I don’t understand why they keep LJU as a seasonal route.
DeleteAs comments above indicate, distance between SOF and SKP is quite close for a plane. We saw what happened with Gullivair.. ok, SKP-VAR or OHD-SOF make more sense because of the distance. I have an impression that Aegean have an excess of their Olympic Airlines ATRs we clearly see they are operating mainly with their A320s. That being said, ATH is growing like crazy. They already achieved 22 million passengers until today!
ReplyDeleteThats what I am trying to explain above , route that is close to go with a car is not efficient to be done with a plane , only if there is not government money injection, good example for that is Gullivair ...Thats what I say if Aegan wants to operate from SKP they should look to connect us with main Europe capitals.
DeleteFor the thing about Sofia you were right. But Podgorica or Tivar or Dubrovnik will be a good addition. Now lets get real, Aegean will not launch flights from Skopje to main European capitals. They clearly said that they want better connection within the balkans.
Delete* Tivat
DeleteIs there a chance Athens-Banja Luka will become a scheduled route next year?
ReplyDeleteBNX management said they are working on scheduled Athens flights, so I really hope so.
DeleteMe too.
DeleteBanja Luka would really make a good destination in Aegeans network.
People from the region would travel a lot more to Greece if there would be a decent nonstop connection.
BNX airport is working on that so its either gonna be Aegean or a LCC wonder which..
DeleteI am really wondering with which route Aegean applied for the subsidy tender in MKD.
ReplyDeleteProbably Sarajevo.
Deletelikely
DeleteI think its not only one route , they are 3 I think something like that. But sarajevo is chosen to be first we all know why..
Deletehear hear
DeleteThey need to bring Skopje -Larnaca!! Or add flights to Heraklion
DeleteOne would think Zagreb would be able to sustain year round flights to Athens. Why just till January?
ReplyDeleteTime for FR to step in.
DeleteJanuary and then starting again in early march is pretty much year-round
DeleteCould some Aegean routes in ex-Yu work for them from Thessaloniki and/or Larnaca?
ReplyDeleteTGD-SKG/LCA , BEG-LCA BEG-SKG could all work with Aegean.
DeleteNo demand for TGD-LCA it’s not like ATH
DeleteIs there demand for SKP-TIA?
ReplyDeletethe bus takes 7.30 h I think
DeleteI think this actually makes the most sense for a new Balkan destination from Skopje.
DeleteIf it were me, I would start Tirana and Prague.
DeleteIm with you but but PRG might be too long for a turboprop and I think Wizz can get the maximum from the potential of this route. On the other side Wizz to TIA probably too :D
DeleteAegean can get a share of those fat incentives from Tirana airport if im not wrong
✅️
DeleteSofia was started and then always stopped for a decade. Initially, in the 90s, it was successful only because Balkan flew to the USA and Canada. There was even an airline called Jes Air that flew from Sofia to Melbourne, it was a good option for Macedonians. All this was when the US made a ban on flights from Yugoslavia. All this lasted for 10 years and then fell.
ReplyDeleteSo here is a list of airlines and the periods they flew to SOF.
Balkan, Hemus Air and Palair Macedonian1990-2000- full planes with transfer passengers. After 2000, flights slowly lost passengers.
Last efforts 2008-2010 Bulgaria Er. And lastly GullivAir for only about a month. I see no point in this adventure.
If my memory serves me correctly, there was an Airlift company that also flew to Sofia sometime in 2008-2010?
DeleteSkopje continues to get new routes but Ohrid struggling, it seems as if Skopje is taking traffic from Ohrid.
ReplyDeleteTui seems to be quite successful with marketing Ohrid in the UK, there must be other new markets for Ohrid tourism that can create new routes.
DeleteNext year Manchester-Ohrid is going from 1 to 2 flights pw plus the seasonal flights are getting extended, but what about Gatwick?
DeleteLGW has been scrapped
DeleteSadly they terminated LGW
DeleteLet’s hope next year we can see again ATH-ZAD and ATH-SJJ while some new routes like ATH-INI, ATH-VAR, ATH-PRN, ATH-TIV, ATH-BNX could all work out as seasonal routes for Aegean’s network that it’s getting bigger and bigger !!
ReplyDeleteATH-PRN can't work unfortunately as Greece doesn't recognise Kosovo as an independent state. That will have to be established first before flights can happen.
DeleteVAR-ATH can definitely work because A3 will be able to offer transfers as well. Wizz Air briefly served the route a few years ago. I think SJJ is the best possible choice. Holidays and transfers (it is precisely such airlines that survive in Sarajevo, since p2p routes do not work, except for Germany and Scandinavia).
DeleteThis with Nis is great, but it probably won't happen, I hope I'm wrong. Eastern Serbia is very weakly connected. There are flights, but not enough in my opinion.
Delete...and South Nis, Pirot
Deletesouth of Nis is well served now to ATH I would say
DeleteFYI Nis already has flights to Athens
DeleteAnd they are doing pretty good should be upgraded to year-round from 2024!
Deletesays who?
DeleteAegean expanding at SKP is such a positive vibe! Underrated
ReplyDeleteI saw on Twitter that Aegean Airlines' official profile liked the link shared to this news :D
ReplyDeleteThey are amazing !
