NEWS FLASH
easyJet will commence a new seasonal service between Basel and Rijeka next summer. The two weekly flights will be inaugurated on June 24 and operate on Mondays and Fridays. Tickets are now available for purchase through the airline’s website. Further flight details can be found here. On the other hand, the airline has decided to terminate its seasonal flights between London Gatwick and the Croatian coastal city, which will not be restored next summer. Basel becomes easyJet’s second destination out of Rijeka, complementing Berlin.
Bizarre.
ReplyDeleteJust as strange as Ryanair's Bergamo-Rijeka flights which performed very poorly but are still coming back next summer for some reason, and a whole month ahead of this year's schedule.
DeleteSource that they performed very poorly?
DeleteWhy is it bizarre? Krk Island is quite a considerable destination in Croatia, not to mention Cres and Lošinj which are only a short ferry ride away. I really don’t get many of the comments here. When you get out of the ex-yu population, on other forums, comments make more sense. Here, not so much.
DeleteBravo Hrvatska!
ReplyDeleteI never understood why Rijeka airport is being so neglected. It's quite a big city with popular tourist destinations nearby (Krk Island, Mali Losinj, Cres, Crikvenica etc.) Also its quite close to Istria, Zagreb and Slovenia and for the right price people from there would also use the airport.
ReplyDelete1. It is on the island of Krk, so it is not even close to Rijeka city itself. To get to the centre of Rijeka takes a while.
Delete2. The bridge can often be closed because of the wind so you may miss your flight and it is not worth it booking it.
3. Tourists come by car because it is quick and easy to reach the area from Italy, Austria, Germany, Switzerland etc.
4. Passengers gravitate to Ljubljana, Venice, Trieste, Zagreb year-round.

Ridiculous reasons. It's not true...
You can’t just say ridiculous reasons. You must provide counter-arguments. Otherwise you sound like a 5-year-old.
DeleteYup, that is weird. Rijeka is the third largest Croatian city and it forms one contiguous urban area from Bakar and Kraljevica all the way to Opatija and Lovran. That's around 200k people. Only slightly smaller than Split. And yes, the airport is on the Krk island, so the tourists traveling to Krk are there immediately.
DeleteAs for the distance from the city mentioned above, it actually isn't especially far away. The distance from the airport to Corso in downtown Rijeka is about 25km and the road infrastructure is fine so even with traffic taken into account, you're normally at the airport or in the city if you're arriving, within half an hour.
Yes, there's a bridge you need to cover but the position if the bridge is such that it's very rarely closed for traffic.
In fact, the storm strong enough to close the traffic across the bridge, would close the airport to anyway.
@Michael
DeleteAbsolutely correct. Sign under every single word
Ryanair lacks a link with Amsterdam airport, that route would perform really well. Maybe something for Easyjet as well.
ReplyDeleteRyanair flies from Amsterdam to Dublin and Malaga and you really think Rijeka is going to be its third airport there?
DeleteI agree with anon 14.00, FR would have huge losses if they were operating from AMS to RJK, only because of the Polderbaan(18R/36L)which requires a 20minutes taxi to the gate
DeleteI meant Rijeka* lacks a link with Amsterdam and that it could be something for easyjet. Ryanair* was a typo meant Rijeka.
DeleteWith Transavia operating RJK to Eindhoven up to four weekly, and with current government imposed idiotic cuts at AMS, RJK to AMS is simply impossible
Deletevisitors from the:UK won't choose Opatija Riviera and beautiful Kvarner islands ..Krk..Rab..Losinj..Cres because there are no flights from.london to RJK ..only Ryanair. easyjet tried this:Year from.LGW.. but whoever advised them to start on 29 March.. and April stupid too.. OK for mid May..so LF bad..
ReplyDeleteBrits expect airports near to their destination. they won't fly to Zagreb or Trieste if they want to stay in Opatija or Losinj. Spoiled..just the way it is.. they can fly direct to 10 Greek Islands.. and look how Turkey built more airports to reduce their transfer time to resorts.
i am talking about tourists who do not take their own car. Real.pity..we will see if Basel works
Turkey, are you for real?
DeleteGiven the size of Croatia and Turkey, Croatia has more seaside airports
Don't understand why they are terminating LGW, I was on the last RJK-LGW flight of the season on 24/10 and whilst the LF wasn't great, it was much better than I thought it would be considering the time of year, they must be able to fill an A319 consistently in June,July,August and September surely?!!
