NEWS FLASH

The Slovenian Minister for Infrastructure, Alenka Bratušek, has approved the provision of subsidies to both Iberia and Norwegian for the introduction of their respective flights from Madrid and Copenhagen to Ljubljana. “The two carriers will now be notified that the funds have been approved, and the contracts will be harmonised in the next few days. Once this happens, the approximate financial resources that will be provided to each carrier will be made public”, the Ministry said. Iberia has already scheduled the launch of its seasonal Ljubljana service, with Norwegian yet to do so, although it is expected to commence year-round flights from April 29. The subsidies are designed to cover 50% of the airline’s airport costs in Slovenia over a three-year period.

Neither did schedule as the result of the tender, Iberia did so regardless of the results. So let's wait and see if they schedule more rotations

Iberia is just two weekly with a CRJ aircraft for one month and a bit. Hopefully we get more rotations now, especially as Zagreb has daily flights from July to early September.

They most certainly will increase the frequencies and most probably the aircraft capacity too

In order to increase frequency and aircraft capacity demand is necessary.

I guess Iberia really is just doing those 12 rotations....

I am pretty sure there will be no more tenders for now...this was the last out of the three that were published and the outcome of those three is pretty sad so I don't see the point of another tender...

I guess that if they changed the rules that only allow EU airlines to apply maybe we could have gotten Pegasus or Qatar or even a UK airline like Jet2...but I don't know if there is any barriers in doing that (subsiding non-EU airlines from EU member...)

I wonder why W6 ignors Tirana-Ljubljana. They have 55+ routes from Albania. Ljubljana would work for sure and as far as i know Tirana was among the busiest unserved from LJU?

Alenka Bratusek, gravedigger of slovenian aviation sector is now handing out peanuts for airliners to fly it-doesn't-matter-where-just-fly, without even caring if there are 12 or 15 rotations during subsidy period. And they were bitching when AA got some. I hope she finally understands what she has done, and that big decisions have big consequences. Like ruining whole sector (Aiports, Adria Tehnika, Adria just to name few).

I wonder how much discount Fraport is giving on the airport charges for a new route. If it's a generous discount, getting 50% off the remaining airport charges isn't much.

Only if such contract that our Government held back for long and troubled Adria was given to Adria in 2019, we would have seen a different aviation landscape today in our country.

@anon 21:10 - the majority of the subsidies are in fact for the landing charges and handling, so they go directly to Fraport.
