Low cost carrier Ryanair will discontinue two routes from the region, impacting both Zagreb and Podgorica. The budget airline will end operations between the Croatian capital and Memmingen with the last flight on the three weekly service planned for March 30. In 2023, Ryanair handled 44.265 passengers on the route, with an average annual cabin load factor of 87.9%. Although the airline faced no direct competition, both Lufthansa and Croatia Airlines serve Munich, located some 115 kilometres east of Memmingen. The two Star Alliance members handled a combined total of 150.467 travellers on the route last year, which is one of Zagreb’s busiest.
Ryanair will not restore flights between Podgorica and Barcelona this summer, which were suspended in October last year, however, three other routes which were suspended at the same time, including Charleroi, Zagreb, and Manchester, will be resumed. Ryanair previously said the routes were halted over the winter due to a spat over fees. Last October, the carrier noted, “Due to Podgorica Airport’s decision to increase their fees, we are forced to discontinue some flights from Podgorica this winter. The fee hike makes Podgorica Airport completely uncompetitive compared to other European airports which reduce their fees to stimulate recovery and traffic growth. This will have a detrimental impact on Montenegro’s connectivity, tourism, and the economy”.
As previously reported, Ryanair will be the fastest growing airline in the former Yugoslavia this summer season, which begins on March 31 and runs until October 27. The carrier will add a whopping 1.4 million seats, resulting in an almost 50% increase on the summer of 2023. In Croatia, it will be the country’s largest airline this summer based on available capacity, and the second largest out of Zagreb, behind only Croatia Airlines. In Montenegro, Ryanair will be the fourth largest, behind Air Serbia, Turkish Airlines and Air Montenegro, however, in Podgorica itself, it will be the largest carrier this summer.
To be honest, I'm surprised both are ending.
ReplyDeleteSimply put, airline can utilise aircraft on other routes that can make more money.
DeleteWho even flies to Memmingen?
DeletePeople who live in and around Memmingen?
Delete2.824.711 passengers last year ;)
Delete@13.18 (aka more then to DBV)
DeletePeople fly to Dubrovnik to reach Dubrovnik. How many of those passengers do you think flew to Memmingen to reach Memmingen?
DeleteHow many people would fly to DBV if there was a cheaper alternative like FMM is to MUC?
DeleteTivat exists yet people fly to Dubrovnik.
DeleteRyanair starts FMM-DBV
DeleteBavaria has a population of over 13mil. Its a relief for many not to go to Munich to catch a flight and a relief for many Munich people to have a cheap alternative nearby.
DeleteZagreb is the only ExYu destination that didnt work from Memmingen
Some commentators here should take a map to see where is Memmingen situated. Memmingen itself is a small town but in the triangle among Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
DeleteEveryone wanting to go to Munich for cheap? It's a 1 hour train ride and is also close to lake Constance
DeleteThat's a pretty high load factor.
ReplyDeleteIt's an LCC.
DeleteLCCs usually want a load factor of 80%+, and even then, it might not be profitable
DeleteI have seen 4.99€ one way fares for ZAG-FMM
DeleteWow that's a cheap fare!
DeleteThat is prošlo svršeno vrijeme. Sada nema uopće karata ispod 30 eur za niti jednu rutu iz Hr...
DeleteWell Ryanair did say that the era of cheap flights is over.
DeleteSo first OU win against Ryanair?
ReplyDeleteThey weren't really direct competitiom and I'm sure majority of OU passengets on Munich route are transfers.
DeleteSo only route they directly compete on is DUB. And Croatia Airlines has discontinued itm
DeletePity about TGD-BCN. No other airline will launch this route any time soon
ReplyDeleteAir Montenegro might, this winter or next summer
DeleteBy this winter I mean W24/25
DeleteMore pax for JU until that happens. They should push for codeshare with Air Montenegro considering these fleet issues.
DeleteWhat about Vueling? Although they don't have the best track record when it comes to this region.
DeleteVueling only serves DBV and SPU. So don't expect them go start flights.
Delete*to start
DeleteConsidering how many routes they are adding, this is nothing
ReplyDeleteIs it me or is Ryanair increasing VIE-INI to 4 weekly? Wasn't this route operated twice a week?
ReplyDeleteThey also increase BNX-VIE to four times a week.
DeleteThat means less connections for JU via BEG.
DeleteBNX route does not even connect onto VIE route. Better luck next time.
DeleteHahahaha... Vienna is few hours by car from VIE. In which bubble do you live when you believe people fly BNX-BEG-VIE?
DeleteWhen will we get SJJ VIE with a LCC
DeleteZAG-MUC had 150.467 which is on average 200 one way passengers per day. It's not bad since this route is more or less operated three times per day with regional jets.
ReplyDeleteIt's not good either. But it should be considered MUC is covered from almost all Croatian airports too.
DeleteWhy is it not good?
DeleteBecause that's LF of 70% or under
DeleteBravo OU
ReplyDeleteBravo LH!
Wait, you're happy because FR discontinued route?
Deleteso now only SKP, SJJ, TGD and PRN are the only ones as airports serving the capital city with no direct flights to BCN in Europe. Well done…
ReplyDeleteSeems like it. What's worse I'm sure there is sufficient demand from some of them.
Deleteadd LJU to it
DeleteSurprised about Memmingen since they increase frequencies on this route last year.
ReplyDeleteMaybe plane used for one of the new routes to ZAG that might make more money.
Deletetake in mind the huge croatian diaspora in Bavaria its crazy this route didnt work out. I know that they like to go by car/shared car services and bus to Croatia but stil ...
ReplyDeleteI mean, the flight were mostly full and I’m sure the flights, like most currently in Europe, are profitable. Just a matter yeilds. There is a shortage in both planes and crew, so routes have to be prioritized.
DeleteRyanair wants to punish Germany so it's cutting lots of routes there.
DeleteDon't forget that many Croats who moved away recently also travel for holidays to other places around Europe from Germany. They are not like old gastos who would rush to go home every chance they would get.
Delete@18.44 as someone form Bavaria i can only smile at your post ;)
DeleteWe don't need gasto routes, we need more leisure routes.
ReplyDeleteguess the people travelling from Ulm and surroundings to Zagreb and back ar f***ed
ReplyDeleteYes we are, we would pay more, just to have that flight, there are a lot of Croats in the suoranding towns.. Memmingen Biberach, Ehingen, Ulm..Lot of passengers from Switzerland and Austria too....
Deletei ja iz Weissenhorna :)
