NEWS FLASH
Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport is continuing with its ongoing multi-million-euro expansion. Following the recent opening of its new duty free, it has now expanded its check-in area with the addition of twenty check-in desks. They continuously flow on from the check-in area in the central processor building in a semi-circle and are located in the space which previously served as the main check-in area prior to the expansion. As a result, the airport now boasts close to 100 check-in desks.
Elsewhere, the airport is working on its 10.000-square metre new central plaza area, which will flow on from the duty free, while the remodelling of the baggage claim area is also ongoing. The airport recently opened a second new carousel, with a further three to go.

DeleteThe new expanded check-in area is intended for all the other airlines serving Belgrade or shall we see JU here as well? Also, will JU put back into good use the self check-in machines?
ReplyDeleteMoving along, I hope the finish product will have nice flow to it. I think 'clear link' between duty free and plaza should be nice and they need more cafes/restaurants along C/A gates to fill empty spaces. Once they remove all those 'construction notices' then we could see and 'feel' the final look....and judge it.

ReplyDeleteLooks ok but even now every third / forth counter was in use due to staff shortage so this will accentuate even more that one counter out of five works. Hopefully down the road this becomes better!
ReplyDeleteI personally don't like the present new added check in area as it has that toilet island / elevator area in the middle thus breaking up the space and giving the "cave" impression. Also very low ceiling doesn''t look great but that was inherited from the previous build. Overall and honestly it will serve the purpose but absolutely nothing to be proud of!.
No airport is perfect but I am really proud of BEG having almost 100 check-in desks, 24 jet bridges, redundant runways (soon), service to over 120 regular+charter destination, 4 year-round widebody long-haul services (soon 2 more) and almost 8 million annual passengers, more than double of the second best.

DeleteSeen few YouTube videos of walk through entire new terminal area, before and after security/passport check. It is comprehensive overhaul of both terminals, terminal 1 still looks like it is small regional airport terminal in a 3rd world country, but updated 2nd terminal is light years ahead, not sure much can be done with terminal 1 tbh. Terminal 2 looks good, there's loads of work that needs doing. There are loads of shops which is nice to see, but I kind of wonder if anyone shops in these places at all, I never do when I travel. I would never buy expensive suit or a shoes at the airport, my laptop backpack and traveling bag are already full, carrying extra stuff is just not something i'd do. Anyhow, airport needs loads of work internally to be completed, but as it, it is respectable upgrade over what was before. Restaurants are overpriced too, 1640 dinars for a simple sandwich and piece of apple pie.

Terminal 1 is only old, architectonically still better than renovated Terminal 2. I hope that it would not be ruined with low ceiling and new bad windows. Let us see how floor would like in five decades in new Terminal in comparison to marble tiles in Terminal 1. Of course, it would not last that long. I write this post to underline the value of Terminal 1 and to impose caution in crucial phase of renovation. I would stay with green colour on windows, also with the same inspiring green tiles pillar design. I saw proposal for the Terminal 1 front and it looks ok, but do not know for the interior.

DeleteThe old Terminal 2 was actually quite airy until it was "renovated" in the early noughties where the low ceiling in the current check in area was done to increase the floor space of the departure floor above. There was a big DC-10 model hanging off the ceiling and the check in areas were longer because they were 3 or 4 islands with check-ins from both sides (like most modern airports) instead of check in counters being pushed against the back wall. The current old Terminal 2 checkin area is now a cave after the Terminal Vinci extension. By cave I mean the entrance to the old T2 check-in was like 4 to 5 metres wide next to the information desk that was simply a plaster wall during the so called renovations.

DeleteThe terminal 1 building of the Belgrade airport was constructed by 4 women architects / engineers in the 1950s. It's architectural and cultural value is undisputed. It should continue to be a protected landmark.
DeleteTerminal 1 should have been preserved as a museum or hotel, not as operational terminal. Same reason TWA terminal at JFK is now a hotel. It would have been a nightmare trying to use it as a modern terminal.
DeleteIt is used for low cost flights, charters, etc. Belgrade airport plans to expand number of gates. And Terminal 1 has been currently renovating in parts, for traffic.
Delete^ what on earth are you talking about? The only part of terminal 1 that is separate from the rest of the airport is check in. Everything else is integrated in the rest of the building. The gates that are part of terminal 1 were renovated a year ago and look exactly the same as new C wing.

Delete^ no it does not. It never did. It used to have its own passport control but that has not been the case since 5 years ago.

DeleteTerminal 1 was and is a masterpiece. The only thing I miss is the water feature/fountain in the middle of it which you can still see where the tiles don't match the rest.

DeleteNo. They use T2 check in. Rarely do they put them in T1. They never use middle.
DeleteBelgrade Airport will need many more check in desks once Air Serbia’s long haul network becomes JFK - 9pw, ORD - 4pw, TSN - 2pw, CAN - 2pw, PVG - 2pw, MIA - 3pw, and many more places. And Hainan has a twice weekly flight from PEK so that will need its own area.
ReplyDeleteThey will not all depart at the same time. Remember there are only 4 A330s and it will likely be the case that only 2 will be in BEG at one time. No real difference to JAT in the late 1980s and early 1990s where the old T2 was more than capable of handling all those (ie 2) widebodies, plus a Qantas 747-200B

ReplyDeleteWhat more upgrades do you expect? There are 12 passport control booths. There are few airports in Europe where there are no lines at passport control in summer. They will install 5 passport egates next month.
DeleteJust because there are 12 booths does not mean they are all filled with personnel, They are on average with only 4 people from the times I've arrived. The Egates will be a welcome addition.

DeleteI hate the mismatched flooring. Its like they run out and went to as many stores as they can. And that cheap wood looking laminate. Why could they not have the same flooring throughout.
DeleteNice to see some things never change. Like unofficial taxis in the arrivals area. You can spot these guys from miles with their puff parka vests. Just in case local police needs some guidance...
