Belgrade Airport software glitch causes delays

NEWS FLASH

Issues with the cloud platform for accessing airline systems at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport this morning has resulted in numerous delays for departing flights. Although the problem has since been resolved, the system failure has caused delays to Air Serbia’s entire wave of morning departures, which is expected to have a knock-on effect on its operations throughout the day. Wizz Air flights departing the Serbian capital this morning were also impacted. “Most Air Serbia flights in the morning wave were delayed compared to the scheduled departure time, while several flights were delayed by up to two hours. The fault has since been repaired, but disruptions in the morning wave may lead to potential rescheduling of airport slots by European Air Traffic Control and further consequential disruptions from the planned flight schedule during the day”, Air Serbia said in a statement apologising to passengers. For its part, Belgrade Airport said, "Early this morning, just after 4:00, the platform that is used to access airline systems, that is utilised by all airlines at Belgrade Airport for passenger check-in, experienced problems. It was resolved within an hour thanks to the airport's IT staff and the company which provides support for the said platform. This led to a slowdown in the flight check-in procedures during the morning rush hour and, consequently, to the delay of certain flights in the morning. Please note that all the airport's local infrastructure was functional at all time, but there was an unforeseen interruption in the operation of the cloud platform for accessing airline systems".

It's sad that airport was better organized in the worst years in it's history, during 90s, than today

In the 90s it had little to know traffic. There was not much to organize,

^ Are you serious? Are you actually asking this on an aviation forum. How do you think passengers are checked in?

      What cloud platform caused it?

No other major airports reported the same issue. Cause was possibly related to connectivity issues between Belgrade airport and the cloud platform.

When Crowdstrike affected thousands of flights two weeks ago, publishing company name behind it and clarifying it was not a hacker attack helped restore the confidence. Learn from other's mistakes.

No, was thinking you are, but you knew that :) not sure why an airport needs to give you an internal report on their software process. These things happen as we have seen across the world numerous times. You having a meltdown about it is a different thing.

This does happen often across the world, it's just rarely reported because it really isn't a big deal.

Issue here is that BEG, under this management, has so many flaws that it is crazy. Let's hope the kid-CEO does a better job, he should be motivated to prove his worth.

Anon 17:29 I was giving you a positive example with Crowdstrike, if you are capable of learning from it. There was no indication of any meltdown, just a sensible call for accountability.

Happens everywhere in the world, my friend. Just in Serbia it always turns into a whole schpiel against the government, foreign factors and other trending conspiracy theories. Eternal negativity. You clearly didn’t travel 2 weeks ago when Microsoft went down across Europe to see what real chaos is.

The airport was better run before 1991 despite a smaller size. JAT handled its own flight ops and there was no outsourcing.

Outsourcing in communist times pre 90s. Do you hear yourself?

      Delete
    2. Anonymous12:55

Well it was handled by JAT not Aerodrom Beograd. And many airlines around the world still handle themselves at their hub. Nothing to do with communism.

So KLM is wrong to handle itself in AMS, one of Europe’s most efficient hubs? It brings benefits in outages like this because the airline is directly coordinating a response.

Using cloud services shows complete IT incompetency. To see how "bright" future BEG has, one should go and check LIS. Total mess.

Outage happened again today. Goes to show "it happens everywhere" attitude is not acceptable at all. If anything, those accountable should work even harder to take steps that will prevent it from happening, not continue to enjoy complacency.
