Zagreb Airport handled 439.008 passengers in August, marking its busiest month on record and the third consecutive time it welcomed over 400.000 travellers in a single month. The figure represents an increase of 14.4% on 2023. The growth comes on the back of a 9.7% increase in the number of operated flights, which totalled 4.651 for the month. During the January - August period, Zagreb Airport welcomed 2.842.433 travellers through its doors, up 16.2% on last year, or an additional 395.810 customers. Strong growth is expected to continue into September, with scheduled seat capacity up 16.2%.

Anyone know why growth slowed? I expected it to be closer to 20%, not 10%.
ReplyDeleteThe biggest growth was always going to be outside of the peak summer months because those are the months when Croatia Airlines does well in terms of cabin occupancy.
DeleteIt has nothing to do with Croatia Airlines. Croatia Airlines' load factor during the first quarter was under 60% which is a disaster. It has to do with Ryanair which had to cancel many flights last year because of runway reconstruction and hour limitations involved with it.

Ryanair will be reducing planned frequencies and temporarily suspending a number of destinations out of its Zagreb base in May and June.

I expected slightly more passengers in August, at least 445, but 6k less is very good result. On target for 4.3 million pax this year.
DeleteHow come you expected the growth to increase, or I guess remain the same as in May, during the peak season? Peak season is the busiest time of year to begin with, so it naturally has the smallest available capacity for growth.
DeleteRegardless, the growth was amazing nonetheless and in fact, 2 out of the 3 peak season months, did maintain growth closer to 20% - in June it was 17% and in July 17.1%. That's quite remarkable.

Delete@12:56 Think before you write. The Ryanair cuts were in 2022 so they have no bearing at all on the 2024 annual growth figures.
DeleteYou are the one that should think. I linked the wrong article, but there most certainly were many cancellations, and just Ryanair, last year because of the runway upgrade. So of course it had a bearing on figures this year. That's why last year's summer growth was almost non existent

DeleteAvailable seats on offer, I was hopping for a better result, not significantly, but still. That being said, if I am not mistaken there were noumber of cancelled flights this august and this would partially explain slight dip in overall figure for august.
^ I see. Well, can't comment on that because I don't remember what the seat capacity was for August and I don't know about cancellations. Wouldn't be surprised if there were some tho - especially by OU.
DeleteThe one thing I do know is; all throughout the summer until the end of August, they had been renovating the eastern portion of the main taxiway, so the planes landing from the west and those taking off towards the west, had to partially use the runway as a taxiway. This was slowing down the frequencies. Both times I used the airport this summer the crowds were insane.
Any idea when the second A220 comes for OU?

DeleteThe second A220 will be delivered towards the end of the year. They have already started production of it in the factory.
DeleteCroatia has 15k seats more than Ryan, but given that Ryan has a much higher load factor, I assume that the latter handled more passengers?
