NEWS FLASH

More than half a million passengers are affected and thousands of flights cancelled due to a 24-hour strike at major German airports today after trade union Verdi called for employees in the public sector and ground handling to walk out. A total of 37 of 52 flights scheduled today from Germany to cities in the former Yugoslavia have been cancelled (at time of writing). The union, which is demanding an 8% wage increase, or at least an increase of 350 euros more per month, as well as higher bonuses and additional time off, said it called the warning strike after a second round of collective bargaining failed last month. Employers have rejected the demands as unaffordable. Negotiations are due to continue later this month.

good! as a person affected by this last week, it's a small price to pay: while we watch airlines make exorbitant amounts of money, the staff who works a highly stressful job is underpaid, paid minimum wage at best. well done ven.di, keep fighting for the little people
