Turkish Airlines commenced operations between Istanbul and Ohrid yesterday, March 27, marking the resumption of flights between the two cities for the first time in six years. The service, which is subsidised by the Macedonian government, will be maintained four times per week, with 56% of flights over the summer currently scheduled on the Boeing 737-800, 16% on the B737 MAX 8, 14% on the Airbus A321, as well as nine flights on the B737-900 and eight on the A320. The welcome ceremony in Ohrid was attended by the Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Communications Aleksandar Nikolovski, the CEO of operator TAV Airports Serkan Kaptan, the CEO of Turkish Airlines Bilal Eksi, the Turkish Ambassador to Macedonia Fatih Ulusoy, the Mayor of Ohrid, Kiril Pecakov, and representative from tour operators and hotels from the Ohrid-Struga region.
Commenting on the new route launch, Mr Eksi said, "Ohrid, with its stunning natural beauty, is the newest addition to our network. As the airline that flies to more countries than any other in the world, we are proud to connect Ohrid not only to Istanbul but to destinations across the globe. This also means that citizens of Macedonia can now reach six continents through our extensive network”. Mr Kaptan added, “As the operator of Skopje and Ohrid airports, TAV Airports is pleased to welcome the inaugural Turkish Airlines flight between Istanbul and Ohrid - an important step in strengthening air connectivity between our countries. Ohrid, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the Balkans, will now be even more accessible to international travellers. As we mark the 15th anniversary of TAV’s presence and investment in Macedonia, we are proud to collaborate with Turkish Airlines and the government in promoting the country's rich cultural heritage to the world”.

DeleteHow are the flight loads and the advance bookings does anyone know? And will this harm their numbers in SKP? Also they might steal some passengers from Albania as well, Turkish doesn't fly there and the only option is Air Albania

DeleteNot the OP but both LOT and TK have been looking for a regional jet (E2 or A22) for quite some time, both would be expected to announce an order this year

ReplyDeleteActually did some googling just now... LOT has put the tender out for 84 regional jets, and Airbus already applies

Airbus Vice President Benoit de Saint-Exupery confirmed the order on Saturday. He told the Polish Press Agency (PAP).
"Our bid concerns two versions of the A220-100 and 300 aircraft...From what we know, LOT is to resolve the tender and make a decision quite quickly, within a few months. The sooner, the better for the carrier..."
The bid comes a year after Poland's Ministry of State Assets announced that it intended to send a request to Airbus and Embraer for proposals on aircraft to serve regional routes.
TK does so well for the entire region. I am so glad we have them. OHD is a good destination, especially for a short 4-5 days trip to enjoy a nice lake and mountain area
