NEWS FLASH

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport has today put into operation its four new rapid exit taxiways (RETs), which link the runway to the parallel taxiway, which was formerly a temporary inserted runway. The RETs are specially designed taxiways that allow aircraft to exit the runway at higher speeds than normal, typically between 75 and 110 kilometres per hour, enhancing runway capacity and efficiency. The RETs have been built at a shallow angle to the runway, enabling aircraft to vacate it quickly without coming to a near stop. They reduce the runway occupancy time. As of today, Belgrade Airport operates a single runway (12L-30R) with RET R1-R4 and two runway-long parallel taxiways.

Why is RET not leading to the actual taxiway, but only to the parallel "runway"? Wouldn't it be better to have RET all the way down next to the regular B, C, D and E exits?

The parallel runway is a taxiway now. Read the article.

Is this the airport construction update for May or should we expect another one that covers terminal updates this month?

It is not a runway. It's a parallel taxiway built as a runway so the existing runway could be fully reconstructed for the first time in 60 years withoit closing the airport.

It would have been way more useful if they had constructed the new runways 50-60 meters further than the old one so that they could be used concurrently.

Only airport in ExYu region with two redundant runways of at least 3000m, both completely new/renovated. In current primary config it's one runway with RETs and two parallel taxiways, capable of quick switch if needed. Not ideal but much better than before.

But in practice, is there need fot two taxiways? Whichever runway is used (12l/30r) only one way uses the taxiway, not two..

It is good because more aircraft can taxi at the eame time considering there are many flights with the same departure time particularly in the morning. It will cut down on taxi time in such cases.

I’m not criticizing, just wondering why did they have to close it for the works, as here at YVR they do works while runway remains active during the day, explained in the yt video https://youtu.be/EoWzt0kD7Q0?si=xJoOVmwt8uIZJdy-

The busiest single-runway airport in the world is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (Mumbai, India). It handles around 51.6 million passengers annually, according to a report from Voronoi. London Gatwick Airport in the UK is the second busiest, handling around 40.9 million passengers.

They're acting as if there's a plane landing every minute, so we need a RET. lol
But it's good that the construction on the ground is ending.

BEG is experiencing periods with increased traffic where RET is useful in freeing up the runway more efficiently. It is becoming more common for aircraft to go into holding before landing or make a "wavy" approach into BEG due to congestion.

Taxiways aside, how easily could Belgrade build a second usable runway?
By usable i mean far away enough from the main runways since these two cannot be used in paralel due to close proximity.
Also, how far is Belgrade from actually needing a second active runway?

Another waste of money when the money could have been spent building on a proper parallel runway on the other side of the airport like it was always planned.
