NEWS FLASH

The Serbian Minister for Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, Aleksandra Sofronijević, has held talks with the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Serbia, Madi Atamkulov, over the introduction of flights between Belgrade and Astana. Ms Sofronijević noted there are no legal obstacles for the introduction of flights. The meeting was also attended by Air Serbia’s CEO, Jiri Marek. Late last year, Serbia’s President said the country had committed to subsidising a new air service between Kazakhstan and Belgrade which would be operated by either Air Astana or SCAT Airlines. "Kazakhstan has two excellent airlines - Air Astana and SCAT. One of those two carriers, which I would not like to reveal now because it is part of our negotiations, will introduce flights to Belgrade. We have approved all the necessary subsidies for this air service because it is of great importance to have good connectivity with Kazakhstan”, Serbia’s President said in November last year. At the meeting held yesterday, Ambassador Atamkulov said the recent political situation in Serbia has slowed the implementation of this agreement but added that he hopes its execution will accelerate under the recently appointed new government cabinet.

Interesting that Marek was there. If only Kazakhstan was closer, they would launch the flights for sure.
It would be nice to see the development of medium haul destinations such as Doha, Abu Dhabi, Astana etc.

Almaty or Shymkent (close to Tashkent, a HUGE market) would be much better options, Astana is like the gasterbeiter capital of Kazakhstan with few afflient locals except the political elite. Also it would be of no interest for Serbian tourists.

It's the third largest city in Kazakhstan with lots of local businesses (SCAT being one of them) and not so gasterbeiter oriented like Astana.

The guy @12:36 has no idea where Shymkent is.

You have no idea where Kazakhstan is. The fact that you think that there is greater demand from Shymkent compared to Astana is beyond laughable.

You're being stupid again. Wizz Air cancelled Budapest from Astana. So much about the demand. Besides, nobody talked about demand from Shymkent itself exclusively but from the whole catchment area which includes Tashkent, meaning you understand nothing in aviation. Apart from that, from Shymkent Scat can offer connecting flights to/from Astana, Almaty, Urumqi, Shanghai etc.

Of course. That's why Astana handles more than 4 times the number of passengers compared to Shymkent. Imagine calling people stupid while being a shameless ignorant.
Talking about catchment areas as if we're in the middle of EU without borders and with frequent transportation options, meaning you understand absolutely nothing about this region of the world.

" Imagine calling people stupid while being a shameless ignorant." - Yeah, how does it feel?

The fact Astana has more passengers tells you absolutely nothing, especially about the passengers structure. Tinjian handled how much again?

You're definitely being not very smart if for the 4th time you're unable to read what's being written: Astana has its largest share of domestic passengers, and not international ones. It is NOT a tourist destination nor a convenient transit point for the rest of Kazakhstan, unlike Almaty and Shymkent, which is why not a single Kazakh airline has its hub overthere (Air Astana has like 10 - year read again TEN - international year-round destinations from Astana, that's less than OU or YM from their hubs in winter).

It's pretty much in the middle of nowhere and not useful for anything except domestic, limited leisure services for the local elite and cargo stops on the way to Europe.

Astana can be served to Belgrade conveniently via Shymkent or Almaty, which has a lot more tourist and diversified potential. Not the other way around.

Feel free to demonstrate otherwise. Good night.

Biggest market in Kazakhstan is Almaty.
But market with the biggest potential in the whole region is without doubt Tashkent.
Tashkent the capital of Uzbekistan is only some miles from the border with Kazakhstan.

That is why Shymkent makes the most sense, if talking about Kazakhstan.

Else, Tashkent should really be a destination for Air Serbia to look into in the future.
