NEWS FLASH
Croatia is advancing digital transformation in its aviation sector with the launch of the NextGen 5G Airports project, a 5.6-million-euro initiative led by Hrvatski Telekom in partnership with software solution company Markoja, the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences in Zagreb, as well as the airports of Zagreb, Zadar and Pula. The deployment of private 5G networks at these airports is aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, security and the passenger experience.
At Zagreb Airport, drones equipped with ultra-high-definition (UHD) cameras and AI analytics will be deployed to monitor the 14-kilometre perimeter fencing and over 188.000 square meters of runway. These systems will conduct automated inspections, detect irregularities in real time, and reduce the need for manual oversight. Marin Tica, Head of the IT Department at Zagreb Airport, said, "We view the implementation of a private 5G network as an opportunity not only for the airport but for all stakeholders operating within its premises. It enhances processes and service quality in mobility, safety and automation, especially in airside operations. We are proud to be part of this project, which brings excellent opportunities for innovation, collaboration, and accelerated development".
At Pula Airport, the integration of 50 UHD cameras and RCR sensors will enable AI-powered detection of intrusions, fence damage and wildlife incursions. Zadar Airport will utilise industrial tablets with AI software for streamlined inspection processes, eliminating verbal reporting and enabling automated data capture and decision-making.
The project is supported under the CEF Digital subprogram of the European Commission’s Connecting Europe Facility, which provides up to 75% funding for large-scale pilots of 5G and edge computing in sectors including transportation.
Bravo Hrvatska!
