NEWS FLASH
LOT Polish Airlines has become the latest carrier to upgrade its Dubrovnik operations over the winter. It plans to maintain flights between its Warsaw hub and the coastal city throughout the entire winter season, which runs between October 26 and March 28. Over the previous winter, the Polish carrier operated the route up until December 31, resuming flights from March 1. This time around, it will continue to serve Dubrovnik twice per week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, throughout January and February. The airline will utilise its Emrbaer E195 aircraft on its Dubrovnik operations throughout the winter. Changes remain possible.

DeleteHappy to see that DBV is getting more winter activity, I hope we see the same at SPU as well. People here often make out Dalmatian winters to be some invariably gloomy period, which is simply not the case (I fly to SPU every February and it's usually 10-12 degrees and sunny, a far cry from most of Europe). Obviously, local businesses (such as restaurants, wineries, boat tour companies etc.) will have to match an effort as well.

DeleteDoes it really need to be explained to you why tourists do not go to a coastal destination when it's "10-12 degrees" outside? Does this really need clarifying?
DeleteWell staying at the beach is the main attraction in coastal cites focused in summer tourism, but that does not have to be the only one. Casinos, SPAs, historical/artistic sights, hiking trails, festivals, MICEs etc can bring considerable tourists for diversification.

Delete@ Anonymous 11:34...calm down. I was at the end of February in Opatija and it was great. Good hotel with wellness, good restaurants, hiking options nearby etc. On weekends there are many tourists, especially Croats and Slovenes. My brother is often with his family in December or January in Istria. There are many of us who don't enjoy summer only.

DeleteDoes it really need to be explained to you that not everyone goes to the seaside to sunbathe and swim? Most people, sure, but not all. Croatia could and should do much more to attract lovers of wine, hiking etc. during the off-season, as those activities are far more pleasant at 10-12 degrees than 30-32.
Vlad and Mario - Croatia has terrible winter weather compared to other Mediterranean destinations, that's why most tourist choose those other destinations. On the other hand, our weather is still much better than that in most continental European countries,. That's why we can and should do more in winter months, but starting winter flights isn't enough, the offer of activities in the destination should follow, and that hasn't yet happened ever, so I am sceptical in regards to all this winter flights announcements.
DeleteGreetings from Dubrovnik which indeed does often get very gloomy in the winter and has had many winter flights tries before (Vueling, Iberia, LOT, British, Aegean, Turkish...) but they never succeeded as the city was always dead in the winter, pretty much no activities at all, restaurants and other venues closed...
With winter connectivity we might eventually see some increased diversification in the Croatian economy which remains too tourist dependent.
