Busy times for Zagreb
Zagreb Airport saw its busiest August since opening its doors fifty years ago. Croatia’s busiest airport welcomed 260.372 passengers, an increase of 4.3% compared to the same month last year. In the first eight months of the year Zagreb handled 1.566.085 passengers, down 0.3% compared to the same period last year. The airport recorded good results over the summer months. On the other hand, the number of operated flights has significantly decreased compared to 2012.

Zagreb Airport expects another record year, following on from 2011 when it handled 2.319.098 passengers. The airport anticipates seeing growth continue throughout the winter months with the arrival of SkyWork Airlines and British Airways. However, it is 2013 which will be the one to watch. With Croatia joining the European Union next summer, the traditional leap in passenger numbers is expected to be seen, as was the case with Bucharest, Sofia and Ljubljana. The airport’s financial results are similar to that of last year and are predicted to stay that way until the end of 2012.

This year, Zagreb Airport is marking fifty years since it opened its doors. On September 11 the airport will kick off a month of events which will mark the airport’s five decades of operation. Zagreb Pleso Airport was opened on April 20, 1962. The current terminal building was opened in 1966 and has been in use ever since, although expansion and refurbishment has taken place several times.

Ex-yu, ZAG handled 1.570.611 passengers in the first 8 months of 2011., so they saw 0.3% decrease this year, surely not 5 % increase, please correct it.

Congrats to ZAG, they are good numbers for what is the busiest month of the year.

I agree that next year will see an increase due to EU entry - expect filled 319s and Q400s operating daily to/from BRU to cause the initial spike. There will be much greater demand to the city than at present. 3m is not unattainable, but could the airport cope with more pax than the numbers (possible 2.4m) this year?

My question is what changes OU will make to its scheduling and destinations to actually sustainably grow the airline. Simunovic was on to something when he presented a plan for the next few years: we haven't seen anything like that in the exYU in many, many years! And LH strangely didn't like it one bit...

OU still has slack in the winter fleet, but definitely not at summer. The retirement of two (younger) 320s still does not have a publicly-announced fixed date: supposed to be at the end of this summer season when the new 319s arrived, we all know they have been wrongly pushed back a few years...

Also, does anyone know if all 319s now have new seats in?

new seats should be on all airbus OU aircraft by end of 2012. A320 retirement was postponed for a year.

I only hope Iberia, SAS, KLM and Finnair come to Zagreb soon.

Yes, very cool :) But I don't think turkish 737-900s are a novelty. turkish has used its 737-900er quite frequently since the beginning of the summertable season.

Next year I am hoping that BA, Lufthansa and Air France will start using their fleet of A320s and A321s much more frequently to Zagreb.

As for the Qatar, some A330s here and there next year would be cool too :)

I am also hoping that Iberia will start their summer season earlier next year.

What about Alitalia and a possible route to Milan ?

OU should continue to work on their LFs on all their routes in 2013 and possibly open one or two more routes.

Realistically, it is possible that LDZA reaches 2,6 mil in 2013.
