Soon in Belgrade

The low cost airline easyJet intends to launch flights from Milan Malpensa Airport to Belgrade this summer season, pending government approval. According to the “Aviokarta.net” portal, the airline has requested to be issued a license by the Serbian Aviation Directorate with plans to inaugurate four weekly flights from midsummer. easyJet first made contact with Serbian authorities in 2010 when it requested more insight into the market.

easyJet’s arrival will shake up Jat Airways’ existing monopoly on the Belgrade - Milan service. The Italian low cost airline attempted to break Jat’s hold on the route late last year when it launched flights between the two cities. However, the service only lasted a few months before it was suspended several weeks ago. Jat does good business on the route, with Alitalia code sharing on the service.

easyJet is no stranger to the EX-YU region with flights to Ljubljana, Zagreb and Priština as well as seasonal summer flights to the Croatian coast. However, it hasn’t been all smooth sailing for the no frills airline in the region. Last year it suspended flights from Dortmund and Paris to the Croatian capital and also discontinued its Ljubljana - Paris service. It maintains flights from London-Stansted and London-Gatwick to Ljubljana and Zagreb respectively. On the other hand, Priština enjoys easyJet services to Basel and Geneva.

I don't understand why they don't go for routes where there is demand and no competition at the moment, Geneva, Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon, Canaries, Morocco, then link maybe Stansted with Beg, fill Wizzair's gaps in the week or even Gatwick, ..... Plenty of destinations to gain from (both sides).

Why should they go experimenting with other routes when they have a hub at MXP where from they fly to many other destinations, so they are counting on both P2P passengers plus those in transit. Having in mind how many pax JU carries on this route I'm convinced that U2 will upgrade it to daily in very short time

Because it is easier to enter on market in which demand already exist(to Milan)than to create completely new market as it highly risky, especially on market like Serbia is. Look at Wizz Air destinations, those are substitutions airports for destinations which has Jat or Lufthansa, Swiss.

Hopefully their schedule is better than airone. It should leave for BG late enough that one can take the first train from Geneva and be able to make this flight.

Interesting point. What, in your view/from your experience, is a "late enough" time for departure from MXP?

And hopefully the other way around - arrive early enough that one can catch the last train of the day. Basically, they need the mid-day rotation to accommodate passengers from Romandie.

If you are referring to the easyJet flights they first have to be approved by the Aviation Directorate which usually takes 2-3 weeks. If they get the all clear then I'm sure tickets will be on sale soon and flights should launch June/July

They have a huge base at Malpensa and many other route combinations from there will now be possible.
Hopefully they would start new routes in the near future, LGW, BCN and GVA would be great...

Unlikely - the idea of this is to push Air One out of MXP, which has been successful even prior to the launch of the route. Furthermore, with 5.8m pax/yr at MXP Terminal 2 and the largest airline in Malpensa (19 based aircraft), it is rather strategic for EZY and Belgrade is a perfect addition to the portfolio of business/VFR/leisure routes
