Dalmatian to launch Zagreb - Sofia flights

Zagreb to get Sofia link this summer

A new Croatian start-up, Dalmatian, which has been in the works for several years, has announced plans to launch seasonal flights between Zagreb and Sofia this summer. The low cost airline plans to operate flights three times per week, every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, Hristiyan Petkov, Sofia Airport’s Head of Marketing said in a statement. As EX-YU Aviation News learns, services will be inaugurated on June 3 and run until July 31. The airline will lease an aircraft from Denmark’s North Flying and will likely utilise its air operator’s certificate (AOC), allowing Dalmatian to inaugurate flights more easily and bypass additional bureaucratic procedures in Croatia.

There are currently no direct flights between the Croatian and Bulgarian capitals. In late 2011, the then CEO of Croatia Airlines, Srećko Šimunović, announced plans for the carrier to launch flights to Sofia and St. Petersburg to balance out its mainly western European network. The new routes were planned to be launched this year. However, since then, the carrier has given up on its plans to expand and has downsized its network instead. On the other hand, it must be noted that Croatia Airlines’ Sofia launch was tied to the arrival of four Airbus A319 aircraft it ordered in 2008. The arrival of these jets has been put on hold until further notice.

Dalmatian has previously been granted permits to operate four weekly flights between Zagreb and Hamburg, every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday starting June 2. In addition, the airline says it has secured a range of contracts to operate charter flights this summer season. Dalmatian will operate as a hybrid low cost carrier and was “founded to pursue the growth opportunities in emerging markets of short and long distance air travel”. With Croatia’s entry into the European Union last summer, a flurry of new airlines have announced plans to open up bases across the country to capitalise on its booming tourism industry. Air Croatia, Libertas Air and Adriatic Skyways have all announced their intention of launching flights from the country.

This means that Dalmatian will relay only on O&D passengers.

I remember when we were talking about JU flights to SOF and Ukraine, when some of the Croats said that "Bulgarians do not visit Croatia that much anyway, so AirSerbia won't have any success in flying those travelers to Croatians cities". Now we see that there is a demand.

    Pozdrav.

NO there isn't, its a strange route to say the least!

no market between Zagreb and Sofia, strange route, really strange. As to Air Serbia, they only have charter flights to Croatia, to Split and Dubrovnik, no idea about any flights between Split and Sofia, you must be confused.

Why doesn't Dalmatian launch Zagreb-Belgrade flights in cooperation with Air Serbia. It could be a pre-emptive strike, something like JA did.

This is a pretty terrible plan. They're overly exposed to JU potentially launching BEG-ZEG and connecting with SOF. Relying on O&D between ZAG and SOF makes zero sense.

Let's not forget that they plan on flying this route for only two months. They will probably fill the planes with tourists.

What plane do they intend on using?

      Delete
    2. Anonymous12:19

For me it does not seem that we will have BEG-ZAG line soon. JU would have already launched that line if they wanted, because it would make perfect sense to connect two most important ex-yu cities.
Maybe there is something else in the background. Maybe politics, maybe genocide trial, who knows.

Anyways, exactly because they rely on O&D between those two cities, the whole servise would last for a little bit less than two months.

      Delete
    3. Anonymous12:42

The reason is a clear lack of Atrs. JU has no planes to launch any more regional cities.

Vienna airport is a world giant? Not even in the top 50 world's busiest airports, it has a long way before it gets there, if ever. Source:

    10. Anonymous18:44

First of all, do not put EVERY word I wrote under the microscope.

Secondly, there are different criteria to see which airport can be regarded as a "giant".

One of them can be the number of international passengers.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World%27s_busiest_airports_by_international_passenger_traffic

We can see Vienna holds 25th place in the world, so we can say it is some kind of a giant.

Regardless, the point is that an airport of 1.5 mil pax per year cant match with an airport that serves more than 14.5 more passengers. So no need for rephrasing, you understood the idea.

      You are welcome.

      Delete
    11. Anonymous18:53

I am sure VIE is 25th in the world by some measure... BEG is probably in the top 25 world airports when it comes to number of Serbian citizens employed by the airport, for example...

I did travel through VIE a number of times and I fully understand why it's not even close to being a world's giant. You need to spend a day at Atlanta (I did) to understand the true meaning of the world "giant". And, yes, you will be saying "Thank you" after that experience!

"...da im cerka radi kao stjuardesa i da se kaze ,ako avion leti za Zagreb imas posla a ako ne leti na birou si" - LOL. She's gonna remain unemployed for a long period of time if she relies on Zagreb.

      Delete
    13. Anonymous19:50

Lol, I am talking about mesurable and relevant criteria. If the number of international passengers is not relevant according to you, then okay.

      Over and out.

      Delete
    14. Anonymous20:54

Statistics are wonderful for manipulation! Okay, so if international passengers are important, look at this example: BEG ranks higher than VIE in percentage of international passengers. See what I did there? It's true, can't deny stats, but it's really just picking one stat that will make BEG look better than VIE. I am sure I can find some other stat for VIE where it looks better then the others, but does it really make it gigantic? Nope. Another one: world's largest airport by area is DMM, but that doesn't make it one of the world's top airports, because area is irrelevant criteria.

When you see passengers at the gate, does it matter if they are international or not? Well if you are running a duty free shop, it may matter, but in terms of overall airport passenger traffic size, it does not. So when we talk about absolute numbers, VIE (according to same Wikipedia sources) has only about 22% of Atlanta's passenger numbers, or about 73 million passengers LESS per year. That's measurable, relevant and gigantic. According to ACI (2011) VIE was 66th on the list of world's top 100 by passenger traffic, and that's by far the most important measure of airport "size" and relevance. So they are nowhere near the top, and with the general rise of Asian airports, VIE is just more likely to slide even further down into irrelevance. And when you experience dozens of airports above VIE in that list, you will realize Vienna in nowhere near the top in terms of size and relevance.

Nikola, this is how I see it will work :

A320 which will operate Dalmatian flights will be registered in Danmark, under North Flying DK AOC. Knowing scandinavian business spirit and easiness and profficiency in buerocratic affairs, my opinion is it will be done in less then a week. And planes with DK registration will be based in ZAG and operated by croatian crews, as after joining EU, Danmark is one of the countries which didn't impose any restrictions for croatian citizens and they can work in both DK, or DK registered aircraft. In addition to HAM and SOF, I expect at least DBV to start regularly from ZAG, plus the charters announced, for the first season. And I guess, and hope, it will be just the beginning :)

This aircraft has come in from an LCC which didn't have enough ovens ... Aircraft will be in service 1sr week of July
