Belgrade Airport expansion to commence "within months"

The multi million euro expansion and modernisation of Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, which will be spearheaded by VINCI and Greek construction company Terna, is set to begin soon. The Chairman and CEO of VINCI Airport, Nicolas Notebaert noted, "In a few months we will start work to expand the infrastructure in Belgrade". A new Joint Venture company has been formed between Vinci Construction Grands Projects and GEK Terna Group named VINCI Terna Construction JV, which will run the project. The company, which recently advertised for several job openings, is awaiting the adoption of a development masterplan, after which it will be issued construction permits and release details on the planned infrastructure upgrades. "We want to improve operating conditions fast. We are implementing an ambitious investment plan of more than 730 million euros over the course of the concession. Environmental considerations are at the heart of the project – plans include the installation of solar panels and a water treatment plant. We are using our significant expertise in airport management and development to improve the overall customer experience, in particular by reorganising and optimising passenger flows and developing retail areas", VINCI said.

Dubbed as an "ambitious expansion", Terna has already confirmed it will expand the airport's facilities by 42.000 square metres, while the existing terminals will be refurbished. Furthermore, a new 3.500 metre runway will be built, while the existing 3.400 metre runway will be upgraded. A total of nine new taxiways will be developed, the existing apron will be expanded, and a new 55.000 square metre apron will be built. The deicing platform will be expanded by another 6.200 square metres. Landisde, a new car park, with a capacity for 2.400 vehicles, will be built and new curbside/sidewalk infrastructure and facilities for departures/arrivals handling will be developed. Other projects include road work around the airport, encompassing some 3.500 metres, a new rainwater drainage system, marking and static signage, lighting and CCTV camera systems. Furthermore, construction of auxiliary building facilities and other infrastructure works such as waste water and solid waste treatment plants, a heating plant, a meteorological station and a solar panel plant, amongst others, will be built. The entire project must be completed within five years.


The Serbian Prime Minister, Ana Brnabić, said that the expansion and modernisation of the airport is a part of the government's Aviation Strategy 2025, which is soon to be adopted. "I expect excellence and that is also what people in Serbia expect. At every step of the way, VINCI has been able to deliver on their commitments and we are already seeing strong results. The airport is a modern reflection of the future Serbia we are creating in partnership. I am excited to see how the VINCI Airports global environment strategy will introduce a new set of environmental standards. As Prime Minister, I am also thrilled to see the connections being made for our skilled workforce in the aviation sector, particularly at the VINCI Airports Academy, and the overall positive impact expected in the aviation sector and thus for the economy of Serbia".

      Environmental awareness is common around the world, with exception to the Balkans, most notably ex-Yu region. That's why we have some of the worst air on the planet and people are dying from pollution at a larger rate than almost anywhere else. I'm glad they will put an emphasis on environmental policy. More companies should.

      it is obvious that the first thing they will do is improve the existing terminals which they said many times. Had you been at the airport anytime in the past month you would have seen a lot of construction workers walking around surveying the buildings and doing measurements and so on.

    I still think BEG has a decent looking terminal but if the Frenchies manage to built it similar to the ZAG one, it would be really cool.

      All I am saying is that they should attract more airlines (LCC?) to fly during the quieter times of the day. Vinci is doing that in Belgrade. Don't you think that is a smart move? Not overcrowd the terminal but fill it enough to keep the shops, restaurants... busy. :)

      Because it's just like that to lure in LCC to fill up the empty slots. And just because of that the whole airport sucks and the management isn't doing their job. If there would be LCC then you'd be asking why there isn't (insert whatever).

      And Vinci just took over Belgrade airport and you are already praising them as something that hasn't been seen around here. Could you wait to they start delivering what they've announced?

      My friend Frishki, Vinci is already encouraging airlines to move around their schedule to BEG. SU moved their flight to 20.20, RO will have some departures at 20.50 and AirPost will depart in the evening and same with Transavia. After 19.30 airport was rather quiet but that won't be the case this summer when flights are moved around.
      In the period of 19.00 to 21.00 we will have TK, A3, SU, RO, LX... That is something ZAG should do as well. Why don't they offer discounts to Wizz to launch DTM or LTN in late afternoon? That is what I am proposing.

    I don't think people are aware of the scale of things they will do in the first 5 years. First they will build an inserted runway, reconstruct existing runway, add 5 new A gates, build supporting infrastructure like administrative buildings, make a new taxiway system and build new taxiways. From what I hear B gates apron will also be extended and improved and the C gates will be extended to the point that it is like a brand new terminal. They will also eventually build a full second runway, not inserted. They didn't buy all that surrounding land for nothing.

    If Vinci is going to start construction in a few months, who is then working on area between C8-C10 prop stands and the access road? That large area has been cleared recently and it can be seen in yesterday's trip report video. What is that area for, a future parking lot?

      That area is quite large and can be seen at 4:51 in the video. It is large enough for a new aircraft stand. If.they plan to use it for cars it looks too large for multi level parking. Probably just a flat parking surface.

    Прелепе вести за почетак радова на градњи нових објеката,
    Проширења и модификације објеката. Поред свега што ће се изградити, неизоставна је градња платформа за onlookers, на једном од терминала. Као и хотел са два дела. Три и четири звездице. Када се заврши петогодишња изградња аеродрома, и сам ћу до тада имати деведесет слетања из Аустралије. Од првог из Мелбурна, далеке 1971 године.
    Када долетим у Отаџбину за пет недеља да бих присуствовао отварању Међународног Аеродрома Морава Краљево, имао бих малу јавну жељу. Да контактирам некога из управе Аеродрома да бих изнео један уникатан предлог. У вези садржаја будуће платформе за посматрање авиона и са кафеом. Нисам сигуран ко бих ме примио за евентуални
    контакт. У вери сам да бих било плодоносно. Али нисам сигуран да ли би био примљен и саслушан.
    Ипак 2019 година јесте почетак препорода Аеродрома на Сурчину. Као и ново рађање секундарних аеродрома у саставу Аеродроми Србије. За почетак, Ниш и Краљево.
    Радосне Васкршње празнике свима у цивилном ваздухопловству, аеродромима Србије.

    First thing they will do is reorganize all the shops in the departures area. After Starbucks opened its first shop/store in central Belgrade last week they will be opening one at the airport too. Plus nine other locations in the city.
