Sarajevo Airport terminal construction advances

The construction of Sarajevo Airport's new passenger terminal is advancing with work scheduled for completion by the end of next year. The new facility, which will spread over 10.000 square metres, will feature twelve check-in desks, five gates and one air bridge. It will be linked to the existing terminal to form a single functioning unit with the capacity to handle two million passengers per year. "Anyone who is flying from Sarajevo Airport these days can see that we have become a big construction site. By autumn 2020, when construction work is completed, the largest and busiest airport in Bosnia and Herzegovina will be even more significant, beautiful and modern, with much more content, especially in the food and beverages sector, to the satisfaction of our visitors", Sarajevo Airport's General Manager, Armin Kajmaković, said.

Sarajevo Airport will also undertake airside work as part of its three-year modernisation project. This includes the expansion of the main apron and the overhaul of the runway and taxiways. The project has been described as "extremely challenging". Its value has been put at 10.2 million euros and no firm time-frame has been given for its completion. In addition, the construction of a stand-alone 300 square metre VIP terminal building is currently underway, with its completion expected in early 2020. Furthermore, a new business and administrative building. which will house staff office space, will also be erected. These two projects are valued at 3.8 million euros.

Sarajevo Airport is expected to see strong passenger growth in the coming months with a number of carriers recently launching new flights from Bosnia and Herzegovina's capital. These include FlyBosnia, Flynas, Aegean Airlines, Norwegian Air Shuttle and Eurowings. During the January - May period, Sarajevo Airport welcomed 338.529 passengers through its doors, representing an increase of 0.4%. This summer, Dubai will be the most served route from Sarajevo, followed by Istanbul, Sharjah, Vienna and Zagreb.

That's busy. At times you don't see so many aircraft parked at other much larger airports in ex-Yu.

    3. Anonymous09:33

Yes because other airports are better at handing their resources. This shows that SJJ is catastrophic and running their facilities and I wonder if what they did with OU is even legal.

Other airports have more available spaces and a longer runway, both of which SJJ will improve on once this project is finished.

Hmm there is so much more potential in terms of connectivity. If you look at the map, coverage in western Europe is not great but it's not much better in eastern Europe either. I'm sure there could be potential for Aeroflot to launch flights from Moscow and for Transavia to fly from Amsterdam or Paris.

Had they let Wizz Air expand as requested, we would now have great European coverage, plus excellent Middle East network and 2 million passengers.

My question is where to from here. The new terminal is not going to satisfy Sarajevo Airport's needs in the long term but where will SJJ expand? There is no room.

    1. Anonymous09:57

There is plenty of room geographically, it's just that some important projects such as enabling autopilot landings can't be done because the main road doesn't allow for enough guidance for the autopilot to pick up.

  14. Sarajevo airport will achieve 2 mil probably in 2022. They will need another expansion. How is that possible? Tourism in Sarajevo grows 15-20 % per year. Sarajevo is a city where East meets West. It is not possible to work with capacity for 2 mil passengers. Does anyone have an idea about what is gonna happen after 2022/2023?

MAS has to make major move and start building airport in Sokolac region. And just to make sure for those who may start replying with rubbish, it does not matter where it will be located. They have to start thinking about it now. The alternative can be only Visoko location.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous18:00

SJJ has more than enough room for expansion for the volume of traffic it can realistically reach in the next 15-25 years. The apron can (and needs to) be enlarged 100-150% in SE direction and any further terminal building expansion will follow on that side. [S.K.]
