Lufthansa and Swiss launching Ljubljana service

NEWS FLASH

Lufthansa CityLine and Swiss International Air Lines will introduce flights from Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich to Ljubljana this coming winter season.

Lufthansa will operate double daily flights from Frankfurt to the Slovenian capital starting October 27 using the Bombardier CRJ900 jet. Further details can be found here. Services from Munich will launch on November 1 and run daily, also with the 79-seat CRJ900. Additional flight information can be viewed here.

Swiss International Air Lines will inaugurate five weekly services from Zurich to Ljubljana on October 16, increasing to daily on October 27. Further flight details can be found here.

The Slovenian government recently announced it was in talks with members of the Lufthansa group to take over a select number of Adria Airways' routes following the latter's demise.

Early morning departures will be missed. First ones to leave LJU are around 0900-0945 HV JU TK
Will see who is the first of foreign carriers to establish an early morning departure before 8h ex LJU.

Air Serbia wanted overnight flights to LJU but the airport is closed at that hour.

My guess is that they wanted something like this:

      BEG-LJU 00.30-01.50
      LJU-BEG 04.40-06.00

Can someone with more aviation knowledge comment if 1 month lead time is fast or slow

    3. Anonymous12:16

yup, as the previous reply says...1 month is peanuts. You have to arrange availability of plane, crew, slots at both ends, hire ground/operations crew at one end, make IT arrangements in all the systems, etc. etc. They were at least somewhat prepared.

For example if someone would want to hire people from Adria (let's say for ground ops at lju), they will have a 15 day notice period, so there is half a month.

This is very fast. I'm surprised that they haven't already released their crew schedules that they can't change fundamentally once released.

I wonder what they cancel in order to free up the capacity. Or they wetlease someone (Nordica/Air Nostrum/CityJet) to fly another line of flying, freeing up a Cityline aircraft.

Trs - Fra services were scheduled and bookable also for the winter timetable, but a few days after Adria went bunkrupt Lh cancelled the already planned Trieste - frankfurt route. That's why Lh managed to introduce new flights to lju in a very short time using the same aircrafts, same crews, and there aere also the same flight times bwt trs to fra and lju to fra.

OS is already flying three times daily to KLU (one hour away from Brnik) and they offer great connections so I kinda understand their decision not to cannibalize their own existing flight ops. Out of SN/LH/LX/OS combo they are the only ones flying to KLU.

Are the locals still hoping this airlines will have cheap fares? Reading the Slovenian newspapers last days, all wishing bankruptcy for Adria... I guess in a year or two they will realize how it was nice to have flag carrier.

    1. Anonymous12:34

well you have to elaborate which locals. The local locals alias average Joe from the farm want LCCs and prices of 1 euro for flight to Kuala Lumpur, everything else is per definition deemed expensive. The other locals are the establishment locals, who's ticket is paid by the government and/or their company, and they more or less care less about the ticked price. They are more crying that for starters there won't be as many rotations, cause it's all for their convenience. Like the statement on TV of the former supervisory board president that JP must fly to SJJ because he has lectures there :D

    3. Anonymous12:39

Actually by the looks of it fares are now half the price of what Adria offered. I think many will be very happy with that replacement.

      Delete
    4. Anonymous12:46

Fares are low because flights were just released so planes are empty. CRJ is not a cheap plane to operate so expect high fares. LH is not known for cheap flights, look at their tickets from ZAG.

      Delete
    5. Anonymous13:00

What exactly is the advantage of a state-owned flag carrier? If the routes are profitable, it doesn't matter which airline serves them, and without state funding, the fares are bound to be market-based (i.e., competitive). If certain routes are not profitable, a state-supported flag carrier is just wasting taxpayers' money on them, while charging fares that are out of reach for most of those people.

      Delete
    6. Anonymous13:18

The locals are hoping that bankruptcy of Adria will bring LCC to LJU. It will not. SLO is too small market for LCC. LCC don't have 100 seaters. And why would Ryanair move from TRS to LJU? To have service from both is just stupid. Wizz is serving VIE and BUD. Why would they increase the operations from LJU? Can someone explain this to me?

      Delete
    7. Anonymous15:04

Its not about LCCs, its about Adria having insane price tickets for Ljubljana. I was flying from/to Trieste with Lufthansa (transfer), because it was significantly cheaper. Now I hope the market will correct itself some, because we will have competitive alliances in Ljubljana. I will still fly the best option I find (time and price) whether its Ljubljana, Venice, Trieste or Zagreb - Star Aliance, SkyTeam or oneworld or LCC.

well OS has foremost a plane capacity problem. When JP ceased operations, OS had to cancel some flight because they didn't have any spare planes right then and there.

but the VIE line was always the thinnest, a lot of times covered by only Saab...so probably is not at the top of OS's priority list the very first second.

hahah, some people here simply still seem to have that communism attitude.

LH group will have difficulties getting those flight profitable year round. As last anon say it is cheaper for LH to have JP or OU fly instead of flying themselves. LH costs are way higher and demand is low, so filling those flights at reasonable prices will be hard. There is a reason why JP vanished.

      Delete
    3. Anonymous16:56

Don't get that communism thing with me. If LH costs are way higher and demand is low, then LH please DON'T fly to LJU and don't lose money! But they do want to fly there.

LH is NOT just about profits, it's about TOTAL CONTROL of CEE aviation market first and foremost. If you don't know this or deny this goal, please don't make any more comments.

Anonymous@16:56: How can the LH Group have total control of the market when it has serious competitors such as Air France-KLM and Turkish?

      Delete
    5. Anonymous17:35

AF/KL are relatively small players in CEE, same for BA/IB. Turkish is funneling CEE passengers to ME, Asia, Africa and other markets, but TK is not focused on destroying LH Group on routes within CEE like ZAG-FRA or BEG-MUC. LH eventually want majority of that market split between them and ULCCs.

      Delete
    6. Anonymous17:59

True, but Turkish has wisely focused on connecting CEE to the Middle East and Asia, and it's -- to borrow your analogy -- destroying just about everyone on routes to Istanbul. Also, with its recent route expansion, Air France-KLM has shown its long-term commitment to LJU, so Slovenian travelers will have a choice of at least two airline groups when connecting to the West.

      Delete
    7. Anonymous08:04

Actually, in LJU one of LH Group's main competitors will be JU for the Balkan market. In the past these passengers were mostly handled by JP-OS combination via Vienna. OS is not here, MUC is too far north so that leaves the market to JU. As for the Middle East, that's where TK will dominate and to a lesser extent JU.

LH Group will compete with AF-KL for North American and Western European passengers. Of course, it doesn't help that LH has a pretty bad timetable in LJU.

      Delete
  19. Anonymous13:59

One thing that no one mentions is the bad publicity LH Group got. How many of their travellers were stranded in MUC, FRA, VIE, ZRH... because they couldn't fly them home.

Good! Instead of letting ordinary people subsidize a loss-making airline, they're letting the market determine who flies where and for how much -- exactly how aviation works in most of the developed world.
