Spain’s Iberia has scheduled its widebody Airbus A330-200 aircraft on a select number of flights between Madrid and Dubrovnik during the 2020 summer season. The carrier will deploy the 288-seat jet on April 18 and 25, as well as on September 7 and 26. It represents a notable capacity increase from the regular 174-seat Airbus A321 aircraft which will be used on the route throughout the summer. Iberia’s A330-200s feature nineteen seats in business class and the remaining 269 in economy. In addition to Dubrovnik, Iberia will maintain flights to Zagreb and Split in Croatia, as well as Zadar through its subsidiary Iberia Express.

Well demand is there. Last year during peak they used the A321 on al lof their 3 daily flights to MAD.

ReplyDeleteThis is most likely cruise traffic, IB has special charters to ATH on the A346. My guess is that with Venice becoming a mess, some of the traffic has moved to Dubrovnik. Citizens of Venice are angry that cruise ships are destroying the lagoon.

DeleteSpaniards are amazing tourists. They are a bit loud but polite and very nice.
DeleteThey are now discovering the Balkans and Croatia is included in the list.
Other popular destinations for them include Veliko Tarnovo, Brasov & Tivat.
This is most likely to enhance their connecting services in Madrid. Just like they send A340 to LHR to mostly serve as a connection to Latin America.
DeleteThis is solely aimed at cruise ship tourists who usually and unfortunately dont spend a cent (or lipa) in the country (Croatia) - being ferried directly from the airport to cruise ship in the harbour by a chartered bus - even chartered at foreign companies at times.
DeleteFor ex. there are many widebody charters, even 747 Jumbos, each summer from MAD to RLG, pureley for cruise guests.
Another reason or probably just nice side effect is training opportunity for IB: Pilot training short haul on widebody, same as OS is flying almost each year some rotations to DBV and now more often to FRA using 767 and 777 for crew training.
Anonymous@11:50: Slovenia also received 88,000 tourists from Spain last year -- an impressive number considering that Iberia will only launch its lights to LJU this year.

DeleteYou forgot Slovenia, dear. IB is launching LJU this summer and above all, even upgraded the service to 321. So, I will not be surprised to see their A330 or even A350 in the future.
DeleteWell JU already flies to MAD and BCN and both destinations have been increased in 2020. On top of that there is Vueling from BCN and Wizz Air from SKP to BCN. Iberia flies to Croatia and Slovenia because local airlines have failed to capture the market. ;)

DeleteWhat cruisers? Dubrovnik is just port of call, not port of sail for many large cruise ship companies. People don't start or end journey in DBV.

That was 2013 offer. It does not exist any more, go to MSC website. No more DBV.
