Air Serbia to launch a dozen new routes and “exotic” destinations

Air Serbia is preparing to expand its route network with around twelve new routes, some of which will be launched as early as this winter season, although the majority will be added next summer. The carrier’s CEO, Jiri Marek, told “Aviation Week”, “We are currently planning around a dozen of new destinations for next year, as well as more frequencies in the region to guarantee connectivity to Chicago, New York and China. And some of the new destinations, even exotic ones, might come already in the winter season”. Mr Marek noted that Air Serbia does not need additional destinations in Europe, but more frequencies, indicating that many of the upcoming new routes will be outside of the continent.

As recently reported, Air Serbia is planning a greater presence in the Middle East and North Africa, in addition to its planned new services to China and the United States. The Serbian carrier has been absent from the Middle East since March 2020, having discontinued flights to Beirut, and suspending operations to Cairo and Tel Aviv, as well as shelving plans to serve Amman in Jordan this summer. However, the airline did operate regular charter services between the Serbian capital and Dubai during the Expo 2020 event from October 2021 until this March. According to OAG data, the busiest unserved destinations in the Middle East from Belgrade include Kuwait City, Tehran, Muscat, Baghdad, Amman and Bahrain.

Air Serbia has said it will grow its fleet with the addition of an Airbus A320 aircraft. Furthermore, due to high seasonality, the airline is looking to either make a capacity provider agreement on a long-term basis or attempt to enter into a Joint Venture agreement with reverse-seasonality operators in order to have wet-leased equipment available over the peak summer months. In addition, the company will add a further two ATR72-600s to its fleet by the end of the year and is believed to be considering more turboprops next year. Air Serbia recently announced it would be hiring new cabin crew members for the “announced expansion of intercontinental, Euro-Mediterranean and regional destinations”.

I would be excited about them growing if I didn't experience Air Serbia's ground operations mess at BEG this morning.

My sister flew to LCA (1 in business, 128 economy) and when we got to the airport at 04.45 the check-in line was all the way to the little coffee shop on the corner by the exit/entrance.
It was a complete and utter mess. Lines were broken, families with children were waiting at the regular line despite JU staff standing next to them. People were arguing and shouting... This was all on island 1.
Island 2 had 4-5 check-ins with JU signage but no one was working there. An hour later some JU staff started screaming Oslooooo, Aaaamsterdam, Paaaaris, Stooockhooollmmm... and then they started dragging people out of that line and started sending them to Pier 2. Soon enough there was a large crowd there as well.

When we reached the check-in I noticed that not all of them were working, actually two were empty. Seems like they didn't train their staff properly. For example, in front of us was a gentleman who was heading to AMS on a staff ticket. The girl working there didn't know what to do so she had to wait for her supervisor to tell her.

Since both piers were overcrowded, they started sending people straight to the check-in counters at pier 1. People were frustrated and angry and JU staff was running all around shouting out various destinations.
Later on we were told that JU initially placed LCA check-in at pier 2. We were surprised as this was not written anywhere, not on the tvs, not on the check-in counter, nowhere.

I do not understand why they didn't activate all check-ins during the morning rush hour. Furthermore, JU staff completely failed to organize the mass and to separate families from the rest of us (JU has two dedicated check-ins for parents with children).
Thank God charter flights to Rhodes and Cephalonia (with a 6 hour delay) were moved to check-ins at Terminal 1.

We asked if there was a drop off counter and we were told by the lady that there wasn't and that we had to wait with the rest of the crowd.

All in all, it was a living nightmare and it felt as if we were at a sale at some Middle Eastern bazaar.
Completely disorganized and chaotic. So on top of all this they are going to add more flights? Maybe they should first fix what they already have before dreaming of some exotic destinations.

It doesn't matter who handles them, JU needs to make sure that the handling agent is working efficiently. At the end of the day, passengers are not going to blame BEG for this mess, they are going to blame JU.
As a client, they need to tell BEG what they need from them just like other airlines are doing.

Hopefully JU realizes what a mistake it was shutting down ASGS. Hopefully they resurrect at least a part of it so that they can avoid such nightmare scenarios.

    10. @Nemjee: Last time I flew with JU (June 18th) the airport had placed a single mobile counter staffed with one worker + one police officer so that they could check if JU passengers are fit to fly (COVID-19 my guess) to their final destination. At 6:45 its basically one of the first 7-8 flights to leave in the morning.
Boarding completed more or less on time, doors closed on time, plane was already at the gate, parked overnight and i took off with a 45 minute delay. The pilot himself told us FCO was a mess and that ATC was also holding us.
BEG check in is absoloutely horrible, that stands, but delays are also happening because of ATC

I don't justify anyone here, but there are many factors that should be considered before we on this forum say "it's their fault, they are neglecting it". As customer flying we can be whatever, but as members of this forum I expect a bit more balanced approach.

    17. JATBEGMEL13:18

Once JU got rid of the Jat staff at check in desks and replaced them with new people, check in started getting a fair amount of people who were not competent at the job. Not knowing how to check in staff travel, for example, has been a problem they have had for years.

I had a flight a couple years back with FZ that ended up being diverted to TSR due to fog in BEG, I think the gate was A7, full flight squeezed into that cramped gate. Staff had no idea that the flight had diverted, they were still bringing people into the gate. Finally, when they got that information and told passengers to exit the gate, instructions were not made clear as to what to do, most people went to passport control. Police eventually got involved, yelling at the ground staff, in front of passengers, to follow procedures and to assist the passengers, who were going between passport control and the transfer desk seeking information.

However, I flew the other day out of BEG and had no issues. Check in was really quick. I did online check in prior to the flight and had to drop off my luggage. The JU app doesn't work properly so I had to do the online check in on their site. Staff were friendly.

BEG is seeking new employees however problem is getting people to work due to crappy conditions for crappy pay. Their ads on social media are full of comments asking about the salary, which end up being deleted.

      @10,19

JU have huge problems with turn around times at European airports. 40 minute turn around times are usually taking 2 hours at places such as CDG and AMS. It's not just ATC, but airports they're operating into. Jump onto FR24 and check it out.

      Delete
    18. Anonymous15:22

Airport is in terrible conditions, as is check-in and handling staff, regardless of the company. They are inexperienced, not motivated, not even properly trained. Last week I flew to Dubai - handling agent is SkyPartner. Guy at the check in, like Mister Bin, it was crazy, like 15 min per passenger. After that, in the plane, something unprecedented- the push back car started push back without captain’s approval and with the parking brake on - we spent additional hour waiting for checks by the pilots and then Jat Tehnika. The whole airport is a mess!

Problems with construction, other airports and ATC delays aside, Air Serbia has to put pressure where needed to improve gate and boarding experience for 2023. If Lufthansa at that same Belgrade airport can have orderly and organized boarding process so can Air Serbia. Not just can, they have to.

      Delete
    20. Nemjee18:47

As far as turnaround times at various airports go, this is not a post-covid phenomenon. For years now there were certain airports where JU planes would almost always leave with a delay. Some of them were ATH, CDG, BEY and so on. I remember seeing JU A319 land at the same time as A3's A321 at CDG. Aegean would leave more or less on time while JU would have a 30 to 40 minute delay. This was a regular occurrence. I know some years ago JU used to have a person who was in charge of quality at various airports. Don't know if that post is still around. It should be.

Air Serbia is profiting from the economy doing well. It was just reported that Q2 2022 GDP growth was 4%. This is quite good given the overall situation in Europe. There is a reason why JU is seeing such strong demand. If they don't pull their act together their competition will ride the wave - which many like Wizz Air, Lufthansa Group and others are already starting to do.

Like JATBEGMEL wrote a few times until now, work culture at JU needs to change. They need to treat their employees better so that they can see a future at the airline. A happy worker is an efficient worker.

Sure, but with Qatar's focus on participating nations I don't see much room for JU. Unless Govt makes some charter deal like for Dubai Expo but that's some other story.

I've put AUH as an idea as JU does not have a clear connection to Australia or to any of the ME3 airlines

That kind of connection is much needed, wherever they can make some deal. Sure AUH would be first idea.

Today's comes the news about further expansions while today their schedule is in a complete mess with many flight being delayed by hours. Who are they trying to fool!??!

Vasom logikom KLM, British i Lufthansa su trebale svoju kompaniju da zatvore jer su imale daleko vise kasnjenja i ogroman broj otkazanih letova. I da ako se kasni ne sme da se razmislja o daljoj ekspanziji.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous11:46

Strictly from PR side, it's not OK to announce expansion when facing issues like this (which they still haven't made), but business-wise of course they should planning it even with issues like this.

Many as in a few. European airports are a mess and there is a couple in particular.

YU-APL spent 122 minutes in AMS rather than the 50 it is scheduled to do.

YU-APM arrived late from AER this morning, resulting in DUS being delayed.

YU-APB departed late to LHR due to a late arrival from SVO.

YU-APA left late for EFL as it operated the NUE rotation, which departed on time.

4 aircraft out of 21. Thats not a complete mess.

      Delete
    4. Anonymous15:10

And the big question is why did AER and SVO depart yesterday evening with such massive delays? Seems like Russia flights can never depart on time; is it bomb treats still or something else in the handling procedure fro these flights?

      Delete
    5. JATBEGMEL15:20

Extra procedures are in place due to daily bomb threats. Delays are no longer 7+ hours because of it.

      Delete
    6. Anonymous15:55

Is possible joint venture with TK somehow connected to this expansion?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Nemjee18:57

I think TK has more pressing issues than to think of a JV with JU. Their long-haul network is collapsing on a daily basis. Flights are late between 2 and 5 hours.

  36. Anonymous13:03

Well, they will have 2 A330 almost whole winter (JU-ARB goes only on C1 check that lasts one month) and only 3-4 intercontinentals PW whole winter season (2-3 PW JFK+1 PW China) so it is logical to "try" regular service to exotics - my wish is Punta Cana and Havana at least. 1PW each

    2. I'm just not sure about the demand to those two, plus the visa issue. They said that there's something exotic coming up and I just thought there's no way they'll go for destinations in the Caribbean etc, so Tenerife would be a logical choice, with more and more Serbians holidaying there (much like they introduced Palma with success)

JU says that their european network is already big enough .
I mostly agree but still would like to see them in Malaga, Palermo or Catania .
And if not then i hope that Wizz or Easyjet finally start Malaga and Catania twice a week with the A321 .

My flight was delayed the other day by over 1 hour. I knew what was happening (late arrival of the aircraft from AMS) and was able to understand the situation and have no complaints. JU and airport staff could communicate better with passengers.

Punta Cana in Dominican Republic is a best option for charters during winter. It is a great and afordable destination. All-unclusive beach resorts are about 500$ for a week per person.
A330s are not that bussy in winter so once weekly is not a problem at all.
Many European countries have Chartes and seasonal flights to Punta Cana. So I think it will be a great afordable summer destination in winter months.
