Air Serbia downgrades Salzburg service over winter

Air Serbia is downgrading its service between Belgrade and Salzburg by limiting its winter operations. The carrier, which initially planned to serve the Austrian city twice per week throughout the winter, suspended the service between the two cities last Saturday. Operations will resume on December 24 and run twice per week until January 14, 2023, after which they will be suspended again until early March. Air Serbia introduced flights from Belgrade to Salzburg this summer with three weekly rotations. Services were to run twice per week throughout the entire winter season.

    This is for operational reasons. ATR has heavy restrictions while the A319 is too big.
    Good news is that they have loaded some additional increases from April. I noticed Bologna was increased from 3 to 4 weekly!

      OTP also got capacity increase on certain days as well, they're sending A319 instead of ATR.

      My guess is bad weather and strong winds which would require additional fuel to operate this relatively long flight. When they saw what payload restrictions would be needed they decided to skip it for winter.
      Also, let's not forget that there is Wizz Air down the road which operates quite successfully out of FMM.

      How come it is a operatinal reasons.
      The months where it is discounted are the low yields flights.
      ATR is perfectly capable to fly to PRG and it is longer route comparing to the Salzdburg.
      But they are expanding which is amazing.

      My guess that it has to do with the terrain. Prague is a longer flight but it is mostly over flatlands. SZG is close to the Alps so the weather might be more challenging.

      Just not enough demand it's not the end of the world if one route has not sufficient demand. But it has nothing do do with weather. Weather is not an excuse, they fly to Salzburg convieniently between 24 DEC and 14 JAN when demand is high. And maybe other airlines increase Salzburg becasue there are a lot of ski centers there. BEG fanboys JU and BEG are doing great but accept also a loss sometimes.

      Why can't they add frequencies to LJU and OTP rather than sending A319s? Wasn't LJU due to go 3x daily on certain days pre-pandemic?

      Next summer they'll have ATR fleet shortage to start with. There's simply no more space to increase freqeuncies with only five turboprops. Switching to A319 until we see more ATRs in the fleet is currently the only solution.

      JU added the 3rd LJU rotation under flight numbers JU192/193 in 2019. I wouldn't be surprised to see those return next summer.

      OTP also had frequencies increase. Problem limiting frequency increases is that it won't always connect onto other flights. Tonight there is barely any flights after 6pm, hence no flights in tonight's midnight wave. Flights pick up tomorrow in the midday wave, tomorrow late afternoon another full wave of departures which will follow with another fairly full midnight wave of departures.

      This is indeed good as most new increases have been moved to April in stead of June which was traditionally when JU's network would grow. I guess this is a step in the right direction when reducing seasonality.

      Wizz operated this route at the height of covid and they had 40 to 50 passengers. JU should have no problem making this route work. They just need to invest a little bit more in it.

      Lol ok if there was no demand JU wouldn't be returning there next summer. They are also keeping some flights over winter. Like I said, there is demand in Winter but not enough for the A319. Now, if they had the E75...
