Luxair to launch Ljubljana flights in September

Luxembourg’s national carrier Luxair will commence flights to Ljubljana this summer. Services will commence on September 14 and operate twice per week, each Thursday and Sunday, with the 76-seat Dash 8 turboprop aircraft. Flights will continue throughout the 2023/24 winter season, which begins on October 29. Luxair was the only carrier alongside Air Montenegro to submit an offer for the provision of Slovenian state subsidies in return for introducing services to the country. The new flights mark the first time Luxembourg and Ljubljana are to be linked with a scheduled air service. Tickets are now available for purchase through the airline’s website. Further details can be found here.

Luxair boasts a fleet of nineteen aircraft, of which eleven are Dash 8 turboprops. It also has four Boeing 737-700s and four B737-800s2. It wet-leased a CRJ700 from Adria Airways from 2017 until the Slovenian carrier’s demise in 2019. Within the former Yugoslavia, Luxair maintains flights from its home base to Belgrade, Podgorica, Tivat, Dubrovnik and Zadar and has a codeshare agreement in place with Air Serbia. Ljubljana will become the only city that Luxair will serve on a year-round basis in the former Yugoslavia. While the national carrier flies to both Belgrade and Podgorica throughout most of the year, it does not operate to the two capitals over certain period during summer and winter.

In 2020, Luxair said it was studying the possibility of launching operations between the Grand Duchy and Ljubljana, noting at the time, “The entire Balkan region is developing fast, and we are considering new destinations such as Ljubljana. These are our plans. The route has not been scheduled but we are analysing all opportunities and we will launch new routes once the time is right”. Three years later, the carrier said, “Just before the summer holidays, Luxair announces the addition of the 93rd destination to its flight plan - Ljubljana! From September 14, within barely two hours of flight, from Luxembourg, travellers will be able to fly with Luxair to the capital of Slovenia to discover its irresistible mix of history, culture and natural beauty”.

According to travel data provider OAG, the majority of passengers flying between Luxembourg and Ljubljana last year did so with Lufthansa via Munich and Frankfurt. A portion of passengers also used Swiss via Zurich, followed by Air France via Paris. The Grand Duchy is considered to be convenient for use by expat communities in nearby France, Germany and Belgium as well. In 2022, 4.605 tourists from Luxembourg entered Slovenia.

I think and I hope that the remaining two subsidy schemes that Slovenia would put out in July and I think October if I am correct will hopefully attract them to start flights. And it would also be nice to see someone apply for flights to the Iberian peninsula (Barcelona, Madrid, or Lisbon) or flights to Rome and to somewhere in Scandinavia (Copenhagen or Stockholm). A perfect and much-needed addition would also be Berlin but I doubt that there is any airline that would apply for those flights. Those are my extremely high-flying hopes for the next two subsidy schemes and according to the first one its probably too much to even ask for Vienna flights.

Actually, it clearly states that "je ministrstvo v začetku junija izbralo upravičenca do pomoči" which in Slovenian means one or two. Let's make a realistic assumption: Luxair flight is scheduled, so they were selected. All quiet about Montenegro - their routes to Podgorica and Tivat are operational, they are not allowed to fly from Slovenia to third countries, so let's assume their application was rejected as not eligible. Tomorrow a new call is published, let's hope for the best.

A few good news from Slovenia lately
Camex Adria got their first plane this week
    Luxair added flights
Amelia is apparently in heavy talks with the government, which could result in the 2024 lunch of Air Slovenia.
Ryanair is canceling most flights from Klagenfurt
Swissair is adding a second daily flight on Tuesday and Wednesday from the end of September on
LH seems to be upping the capacity on their flights with A319s and E190s
Air Serbia will start using A319s more and more (I'm booked on A319 3 times this summer)

    So it's looking good (ish)

Exactly finnaly its starting to look good. Also there are still the remainig two subsidies to be published and the next one is coming out in july so hopefully some more airlines will apply than it did on the first one….and as well does that mean that swiss will have 11 weekly now right? Becouse they already operate 9 weekly. Or where did you found this news about swiss adding two more weekly rotations?

Their timetable is not a trustworthy source. They often list all kinds of things.

Yes they are waiting to get an AOC and they should get it in mid July. Sierra5 portal reported yesterday that the cargo 737-8 has landed in Maribor, whis will be the airline’s base. It was also said that Camex Adria Airways is considering operating cargo flights to and from Slovenia as well so…

Quite an intersting thing that I read in the news today is that tomorrow Slovenia will publish the second subsidy tender as the money from the first one didn’t go to anybody and the government is still set to reveal if they will accept proposals from Luxair and GoMontenegro but Luxair already launched a new route to Luxembourg. So that means that this route actually isn’t subsided from the tender at least for now.

No, it only says the winners are not revealed yet. But it's clear: Luxair got it.

Yes the winners are not announced yet but the article said that all the money from the first tender is avaible for the second one and Luxair already announced a new route which was not confirmed to be subsided.

Which leaves only Luxair which scheduled the route yesterday, 3 weeks after the tender results were realised to applicants - aka as stated in the tender

Luxair is definitely selected. They wouldn't have scheduled the route year round including whole winter if they won't get money for it.

Nice surprise, but not sure if succesful in the long term. Luxair is not able to offer lots of useful connections thru LUX. The tourism demand will be at the beginning, later on, I dont know. LUX is not cheap. Definitely good for EU politicians but will be that enough to support the flights?? Lets wait and see, but any carrier and route is more than welcome in LJU. So Bienvenue Luxair and all the best for the new routing!

Maybe not lots of connections, but some very interesting, like LIS and OPO, for me LCY is always interesting due to limited options for my favorite London airport. And LUX catchment area is quite big and wealthy.
