NEWS FLASH

Air Serbia has hired almost one hundred baggage handlers to help alleviate issues faced at its hub Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport with the loading, offloading and transfer of bags. Although Air Serbia has its own ground handling unit, it has outsourced these duties to Belgrade Airport, which has struggled this summer due to a lack of staff, causing significant delays and lost luggage, most notably on Air Serbia flights. The carrier’s General Manager for Commercial and Strategy, Boško Rupić, said, “The situation is definitely improving compared to the last two months. In a record short period of time, Air Serbia has hired almost one hundred people for handling luggage, so the situation has significantly improved. It is indisputable that we communicated our plans to the airport at the end of last year. Plans for the summer were made sometime in September and October, and they were initially communicated to the airport in December. We cannot say that there were some surprises regarding the increase in traffic this season. The airport is obliged to handle luggage, but looking at the overall situation, we made the decision to employ one hundred people to handle that job. It is the responsible approach towards passengers who have purchased our tickets, because their baggage would otherwise not arrive at the destination they are traveling to”.

If they knew what they were doing they wouldn't be hiring these people now, at the beginning of August. Don't forget that these people need to get government clearance which takes about 2 weeks.

Doubtful since delays are still huge, just look at their operations today. Regional wave is starting to fall apart with large delays. At some point the CEO needs to come out of hiding and take the blame for the mess.

CEO - yes. But CEO of Vinci maybe. Air Serbia is not to blame for BEG issues. BEG was advised of the situation in November last year to begin with. So they are the ones that have failed here. Air Serbia has managed to do what they couldn’t and this will just go to their reputation in the long run that they couldn’t manage an airport the size of BEG, how will they manage one that’s bigger.

It's no surprise they managed to find them so quickly since they are offering a monthly salary of over 1,000 euros. Now compare that to what BEG is offering.

Please stop spreading negativity without any reason.
First, they are working on this part of the airport as part of overall increase of the capacities.
Second, BRU which is 5-6 times bigger airport has only 7 or 8 belts so even 4 are enough.
Third, problem were not the belt but the lack of people to load in and off the olanes, so get informed a bit.

No, they don't have to have all that, but they need to find reliable partner specialised on ground handling. Obviously Vinci is not much interested in that as it is labour intensive work and probably doesn't generate enough of income for them.

Soon they are going to outsource line maintenance in BEG. They didn’t learn on mistakes. Part of maintenance was outsourced this summer and next summer it is going to be 100% outsourced.

So basically Air Serbia is out of pocket for the new hires and Vinci who is the generator of the mess is getting even richer by having the problem solved by someone else. This needs to be compensated and in real terms with sticking even a penalty to Vinci for the work that was not done properly.

Dear Mr Rupic, you have heavy delaying in flights operations from late April, and that doesn't have anything with airport, but due lack of available aircraft. Disaster in airport organisation was just a cherry on top of the cake

The problem at AB is lack of staff (badly payed and untrained properly), the belts (4 not enough) and islands for check in are too big in numbers ( too many check in points per belt), very bad and unprofessional management placed by political or family relationship with too many issues). Do remember that fish stinks from the head not from the tail.

    1. Anonymous04:02

What really stinks is your ignorance. Wizz flight W9 4002 was delayed from London Luton to Belgrade from scheduled 3:50pm departure to actual 1:04am. More than 9 hours. When that chaos occurs at LTN no one cares, it just happens. But if fraction of that delay happens at BEG then it's your Oscar-sized drama!

You can only dream of your tiny capital airport being as busy as Luton. You don't care, but for those of us who do care this is important as this flight was carrying pasengers to Belgrade and it is fair to compare airport delays. BEG has issues but as independent comparisons show, BEG is not among the airports with most delays.
