NEWS FLASH

The Montenegrin and Bulgarian governments have discussed the introduction of flights between Podgorica and Sofia as part of a new “Destination Balkans” project, which aims to establish a common tourism product and air connectivity between the two capitals. Bulgaria’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport, Grozdan Karadzhov, said, “With the European market now liberalised, we have all the necessary conditions to make this air connection a reality. Such a route would significantly boost tourism and strengthen economic ties between our regions. Additionally, Sofia Airport offers reduced fees for flights to emerging destinations, providing a strong incentive for airlines to take part”. Montenegro's Minister for Tourism, Simonida Kordić, added, “Destination Balkans aims to unite the efforts of Balkan countries in offering a common package for tourists in order to attract visitors from distant markets such as Japan, the US, China, India, Latin America, etc. Air connectivity is very important to us, and it is imperative that this new service is introduced as soon as possible”.

The CEO of Sofia Airport, Jesus Caballero Pinto, as well as the airport’s Chief Marketing and Business Development Officer, Dimitar Bikov, attended the high-level talks. In a statement, Sofia Airport said, “This prospective route will not only connect two capitals but also act as a driving force for boosting tourism and economic ties in the region. Sofia Airport is proud to support initiatives that contribute to the sustainable development of the Balkans as an attractive tourism destination and a hub for business opportunities. We eagerly anticipate the next steps and are ready to provide the best conditions for new air connections”.

I think there is a big potential and opportunity when it comes to conecting popular and exciting Balkan destinations especially in the sumer time.

As Macedonian I would say that OHD (more that Skopje) needs to be conected more with airports like Dubrovnik (this connection is a no brainer in my opinion May to September).

Sofia to OHD could also work.
Maby even some of the north Croatian costal airports like Zadar and Pula. Tourists would love those conections to Ohrid, and the current road infrastructure and the time (12 hours approx.) to connect the Adriatic with this city are putting people off.

Ryanair flies to Zag, but only seasonal. So Podgorica would work only during summer most likely. LJU would also should be tried by wizz of fr. Honestly ZAG has been with good loud factors from Sofia, so I hope Podgorica and LJU will have similar success.
