Airports across the former Yugoslavia welcomed nineteen new routes since the start of the 2026 summer season last Sunday, the majority operated by Wizz Air. Several airports held celebrations to mark the occasion, while Ljubljana and Skopje also commemorated anniversaries with KLM and Austrian Airlines, respectively.

Wizz Air Podgorica base

Wizz Air stationed the first of two Airbus A321neo aircraft in the Montenegrin capital this week, launching the first four of seventeen new routes. Montenegro’s Prime Minister, Milojko Spajić, said, “I believe this represents a major opportunity for our economy and our citizens, and shows the extent to which the government is focusing on air transport. We will need to start thinking about infrastructure, as the airport can no longer accommodate additional routes, so we will look at ways to expand and improve it”.

Wizz Air’s Tuzla expansion

The low cost carrier based its second aircraft in Tuzla this week, resulting in the launch of six new routes. Dževad Halilčević, CEO of Tuzla Airport, said, “The arrival of a second based aircraft and the expansion of our destination network mark an important milestone in the continued development of our airport. The introduction of new routes further strengthens our international connectivity and creates new opportunities for cooperation, tourism, and passenger mobility. We will continue to invest in infrastructure improvements and expand our route offering, with the aim of reinforcing our position in the regional market".

Wizz Air adds three new Skopje routes

A trio of new routes were also added at Skopje Airport, complemented by a DJ and a dance party at the gate.

easyJet launches third Ljubljana route

easyJet introduced its third route to Ljubljana this week by launching flights from Edinburgh. Jurgen Deischl, Managing Director of airport operator Fraport Slovenija, said, “We are entering the summer season with one of the strongest route networks Ljubljana Airport has offered in recent years, and today’s launch of the new service to Edinburgh further underlines this positive momentum. easyJet has been a valued partner of Ljubljana Airport for many years, and we are pleased to see our cooperation expand with a third destination added to the network. The new route creates attractive travel opportunities, strengthens links between Slovenia and the UK, and further enhances Ljubljana Airport’s appeal as a convenient gateway. We look forward to welcoming even more passengers, supported by a competitive offer that makes Ljubljana Airport an attractive choice for summer travel”.

KLM celebrates first year of Ljubljana operations

Ljubljana also marked the first anniversary of KLM’s service between Amsterdam and the Slovenian capital, as well as the addition of a second daily flight on the route. Mr Deischl noted, “The introduction of an additional morning flight by KLM further enhances the quality of connectivity between Ljubljana and Amsterdam. Early departures are particularly important for business travellers and improve access to onward connections, with more than 150 destinations available via Amsterdam within KLM’s network, and over 500 worldwide through the SkyTeam alliance. The new service reinforces our partnership with KLM and Amsterdam’s role as a key SkyTeam hub, complementing Ljubljana Airport’s connectivity via other major European hubs. We would like to thank Air France and KLM for their continued commitment to the Slovenian market”.

Skopje marks thirty years of Austrian Airlines service

Skopje Airport marked another milestone this week, celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of Austrian Airlines’ service between Vienna and the Macedonian capital. Between 1996 and 2025, a total of 27.999 flights were operated on the route, carrying 2.432.089 passengers. In 2025 alone, 126.911 travellers flew between the two cities with Austrian Airlines. Nejat Kurt, Managing Director of airport operator TAV Macedonia, said, "We are proud that together with Austrian Airlines we are celebrating thirty years of successful cooperation, which has made a significant contribution to the development of air traffic in the country. This line is not only an air route, but a bridge that connects people, businesses and cultures between Skopje and Vienna. The continuous increase in the number of passengers and the increased frequency of flights are proof of the trust of passengers and the joint commitment to improving services and connectivity. We expect this partnership to continue to develop in the coming years, bringing new opportunities for the region".

The full list of new routes launched so far during the 2026 summer season, which runs from March 29 until October 24, can be found here.

Not at all anonym 1310h, but I learned from the past that in Slovenia small rolls are being baken.
But in general it is nice to see that these events are being celebrated with small but pleasant actions, which shows, that the airline business or new flights are still something special and more than just adding some numbers or capacity.
