"Only JAT flies direct to Toronto", animated TV ad aired as a "postcard" during the 1989 Yugoslav Eurovision Song Contest selection. JAT Yugoslav Airlines discontinued operations to Toronto on May 23, 1992, following the imposition of an international air traffic embargo on Yugoslavia. JAT introduced regular charter flights between Belgrade and Toronto on June 19, 1970, using the Boeing 707 aircraft, following a series of one-off charter services operated with a leased Convair Coronado in 1969. Due to Canada’s protectionist aviation policies at the time, it was not until November 1, 1984 that the carrier’s operations were officially recognised as scheduled services, despite maintaining regular twice-weekly flights for fourteen years. An Air Transport Agreement signed between Canada and Yugoslavia on November 16, 1984 granted JAT full commercial rights in Canada. The airline expanded its presence in the country by launching services to Montreal and deploying its newly introduced DC-10 aircraft on Canadian routes
