Air Serbia unveils new seats

Air Serbia has presented its new slimline seats for its narrow-body Airbus fleet, which are designed to take less space, enabling the carrier to install additional rows of seating. The new Recaro BL3520 seats will increase capacity on the A319 aircraft from 128 to 144 seats and on the A320s from 155 to 174 seats, growing by more than 12% in total across the narrow-body fleet. Air Serbia will be installing 1.500 Recaro seats in total over the coming weeks. Despite the capacity increase, the seats offer passengers more space by having a leaner backrest and a higher literature pocket. Normally placed in the knee area, the pocket has been placed above the tray table, allowing for more legroom compared to the existing cabin product. Currently, the first of ten Airbuses (registered YU-API) is being refitted. Along with the new seats, the A319 and A320 cabin change includes new carpets, curtains and floor path markings to match the on board décor of the A330, which serves New York. The product on board the wide-body jet remains unchanged with eighteen lie-flat seats in business and 236 seats in economy class.

As part of the refit, the business class section of the narrow-body fleet will now feature the same seats as in economy, however, the middle seat will be kept empty for extra space. The cabin will be separated from the economy class section by a movable divider, enabling Air Serbia to adapt the number of seats according to travel demand. Up to twelve seats will now be available in business class depending on the seating configuration. The airline noted that other business class perks, such as the dine anytime menu with a selection of à la carte meals and an iPad loaded with films, TV shows and music, remain intact. Passengers in both business and economy will continue to have access to wireless Internet service for a fee and both cabins will have the ability to stream movies, music and TV shows through the Elevate Play application, which is free of charge.

Commenting on the new product, Air Serbia's CEO, Dane Kondić, said, “The Recaro seats are space-efficient, much lighter and provide more legroom for guests thanks to their modern design. The new seats are roughly 2.6 kilograms lighter than our older-generation seats, which will cut down the empty weight of our A320 and A319 fleet by more than 3.500 kilograms, reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions". He added, “The increase in seat capacity is equivalent to Air Serbia adding an extra Airbus jet to its fleet and will at the same time improve the inflight product and comfort levels. This will make Air Serbia more competitive, substantially reduce unit costs, drive revenue growth and bring our seat density up, meaning we can better meet travel demand during the summer. Many of the biggest airlines in Europe, America and Asia have installed the Recaro seat, which is a testament to its winning combination of comfortable design and functionality”.

Existing buisness class (top) and economy class (bottom) product

Aircraft featuring the new on board seating product are expected to progressively enter commercial service from today onwards. Speaking to EX-YU Aviation News last month, Mr Kondić announced the overhaul of the narrow-body fleet cabins, noting, "The more seats you have on an aircraft type, the more you can lower what's called your CASK (cost per ASK - available seat kilometres). In the airline industry, the critical metric is one of CASK. You have to get as low as possible a seat cost, offering as many seats as possible. That's why low cost airlines have so many seats. We are not doing that clearly. We are looking at slimmer seats, through which you can get greater density without actually changing so much the seat pitch. We have the older generation seats which are heavy as well. The new ones are not only lighter but allow you to put in more without reducing guest comfort".

They actually don't look bad. Should have had them from the start. Shame about business class though (the seats I mean).

I was thinking the same thing. It's one of the only airlines in Europe to have a REAL business class. They're positioned well geographically to make it appealing enough, otherwise the only other major carriers with a proper business cabin on their flights is Turkish and Aeroflot.

Meh... I wish we would hear about new destinations, younger Atrs joining the fleet and more frequencies throughout the network. All of this is quite disheartening.
Unfortunately seems like Dane and his team did not manage to set up a hub at BEG which is why they have way too many aircraft in order to serve their business model which will mostly cater for the needs of the p2p market.

I think the time is right for a new CEO. This one has proven he is not up for the task.

There will be no expansion or investments into fleet/product. This comes from the overall situation in Etihad which is currently in the emergency mode. Until this whole mess with their "equity alliance" is cleaned up we won't see anything but cost cuts in Air Serbia.

My prediction: next expansion in 2020, if we are lucky.

Anonymous 9:13 is correct. It's hard to believe but we might even see the end of Etihad. Apparently they have already approached Emirates to float the idea of a takeover by Emirates of Etihad. Not sure how that will work with the 2 hubs in the UAE but it gives an indication of how bad the situation is over at Etihad.

Shame about the old business class seats though. That could have really been what kept JU separate from the rest.

People seem to conveniently forget the state that Jat was in back in August 2013.

Time for a new CEO ? Why, because you say so or because you don't like their decision regarding these new seats ?

There is a Board which approves such a decision and if the company has decided to go down this path, it is because the Board supports this decision and they are the ones who decide on who stays and who goes - not me, you or anyone else.

Super argument ! And look where OU is now and what they have achieved in the 5 years since they installed these seats.

In fact, let's go back 25 years and see what OU have done with the clean sheet that they started with.

JU managed to sweep past OU and do more with "old generation" seats in the 3.5 they have had them than what OU have managed to do.

So let's wait for JU to have these seats for the same 5 years that OU have had so we can see what they will do and then maybe we can fairly judge what they achieve with the same product over the same period.

Dude... they had govt help for the first 20 or so years until they entered EU mandated restructuring a few years back, is not a worthy comeback at all.

Air Serbia has been in existence for 3.5 years - not 25 years.

OU started with a clean slate - brand new, no legacy issues or old debt to manage, with a booming inbound market - far and away THE best in the entire region - and they still managed to get themselves into EU restructuring due to previous years of state aid and poor management.

And how do they solve it ? Sell slots, engines, bus service and everything else but the kitchen sink - thus far.

Now if that's not a winning argument, i really don't know what is

I think it's normal to report when an airline is completely changing their product. You would probably be the first to cry that they are not reporting it to protect Air Serbia. I remember well there was a whole article when Croatia Airlines changed its cabin. Its around the same time I started following this site.

You could also say that this is a free commercial for Croatia Airlines

There is no incentive to fly regional fligts on C-class in Europe anyways. Smart airlines realized this a long time ago. Actually, for me it's quite a convenience to have the seat next to me empty. Gives me privacy when I have to do some working, which you can't on the classic biz seats.

When you have 20-30% LF in biz class, it's time to give it up. Very few people travel in business class on sectors which are barely more than 2 hours long. That's why bigger airlines in Europe so the wisdom and removed dedicated biz class cabins and instead, adopted what Air Serbia are now doing. It gives far more flex to accommodate more economy cls pax. The only i have is they should have done this from the get go. Still, can't fault them for trying. It did much for their brand recognition

Agreed. The thing is, now they need to have a really affordable C in order for anyone at all to buy it. Maybe a 50 EUR surcharge on Y tickets, or something like that. But, if noone does, it's not a problem - these seats can be used as Y seats anyway.

Unfortunately it shows a lot about the people that planned and conceived the initial boutique idea in a fiercely competitive environment in a country with very low purchasing power. Dobar potez Er Srbije. Svemu polako dolazi kraj.

      I'm guessing you're travelling in Y - so, what's worse?

      1) Charging for airport check-in. Well, you obviously know how to use the internet and will be able to access bag drop off counter (or bypass check-in altogether) if you use online check-in;

      2) Slim Recaro seats - more legroom, actually, for Y pax, though less cushion. For a 40 minute flight, it's not a big difference anyway;

      3) Seat selection at a charge - it will set you back 300 RSD, I know, a terrible amount, but you can always wait 4 hrs before departure and choose from remaining seats at no charge.

That said, prices to Montenegro are high, but that's the result of the duopoly on the route. Any airline in the same position would charge at least that much, regardless of the onboard amenities or the lack thereof. Just look at the JU/OS duopoly on the VIE route.

I would like to see something like DO&CO catering OS offers - I would be happy to pay for a good meal, while dried up piece of bread is just a poor excuse for food. Nobody likes it, and at the same time, it's costing money. I would prefer an apple, a pear or a clementine, or a real meal at a surcharge. I'm sure JU Catering would be able to deliver decent meals - flown their C couple of times, and the offer was more than fine.

It is really fun reading anti Air Serbia comments. It's easy to recognize most were made by the same people who, in 2013, said that Air Serbia will never get Airbus planes, they will never improve service over JAT, USA will never give them permission to fly to JFK and the list goes on and on. It's fascinating that those people never look themselves in the mirror and say "I was such an idiot to write those obviously wrong things!". Instead they just keep pouring more nonsense on how thin seats and auxillary revenue will destroy Air Serbia! In a couple of years you will see how wrong you were, but that won't help as you didn't learn anything last time. What a special group we have here to make us laugh! Thank you Air Serbia haters, you bring absolutely no airline knowledge but the entertainment value is outstanding!
