Flydubai hints at new EX-YU routes

Hybrid carrier Flydubai is “very likely” to announce new seasonal routes to the former Yugoslavia in the next month with both Dubrovnik and Ljubljana in contention. Speaking to EX-YU Aviation News at the Dubai Airshow yesterday, Flydubai’s Senior Vice President for Commercial Operations, Jeyhun Efendi, said, “In the next one month we will be announcing our set of new summer destinations and a lot of European routes are coming, especially in the South. We can't talk about them right now but some of them that have been mentioned, like Dubrovnik and Ljubljana, may be in our network".  As EX-YU Aviation News learns, the airline has also held talks with several other airports along the Croatian coast this year. Despite considering Tuzla as a potential new route, Mr Efendi noted that the carrier ultimately ruled out the city due to its close proximity to Sarajevo and the relatively small market.

Flydubai launched seasonal operations to both Podgorica and Tivat this year, with the latter to resume next summer. "Because Tivat is a summer destination we shifted to Podgorica via Sarajevo during the winter. Our aim is to evaluate the route to see if Podgorica can be sustained year-round. Obviously it's not a big city population-wise, but we want to see how the Sarajevo - Podgorica flights will perform as well. At the moment, we plan to resume flights to Tivat again next summer. So we will see if Podgorica can be sustained year-round or will we just shift between Tivat and Podgorica each season. The airports are not too far from each other so we are still evaluating", Mr Efendi said. Tivat has performed well for the airline this past summer. In addition to attracting tourists from the Gulf region visiting the Montenegrin coastline and holidaying at Porto Montenegro, the luxury Dubai-owned yacht marina and waterfront development, the route has attracted a significant number of passengers from Albania as well.

Flydubai is also working with Emirates to better optimise its network. Apart from a wide-ranging codeshare agreement between the two airlines, which now covers all routes in the former Yugoslavia, both are seeking ways to better coordinate their schedules and even swap some destinations, either permanently or on a seasonal basis. "In Zagreb we did not coordinate our suspension with Emirates. This was a coincidence. However, as part of our cooperation with Emirates, besides having codeshare flights, we are going to have more network coordination. Since we have narrow-body aircraft, we are able to operate more routes. Out of 95 routes, more than sixty are not operated by Emirates. Part of our plan is to adjust our schedules. We will also look at swapping some routes with Emirates, depending on the demand. There is also the option of seasonal flights. For example, somewhere where there is demand during the summer, you may need a bigger machine [Emirates], while during the winter you might need to downgrade to less capacity [Flydubai]", the Senior Vice President said.

Commenting on its overall network in the former Yugoslavia, Mr Efendi noted, "Some of the highlights are going daily into Belgrade this month, as well as the new flights to Podgorica via Sarajevo". He added, "Sarajevo is one of our more popular routes but it is quite seasonal. Presently, we have four weekly flights and then, during the summer, operations will reach three daily services. This summer we have seen almost 50% passenger growth on this route. Travellers on this service predominantly come from Dubai, as well as our connecting flights from the Gulf. This is obviously inbound tourism".

Flydubai's new business class cabin on the B737 MAX 8

Flydubai is showcasing its new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft at the Dubai Airshow this week. The jet is the first of 76 on order from Boeing, all of which will be delivered by 2023. The new aircraft feature a brand new on board product including new business and economy class seating. However, travellers from the former Yugoslavia will have to exercise patients prior to sampling the new product. The aircraft will initially be deployed on the airline's longest routes including Bangkok, Prague, Yekaterinburg and Zanzibar. The additional aircraft being delivered over the next few years will be rolled out across the fleet and will eventually become available on most of the routes in the airline's network.

Well, truth be told we were told by ZAG fanboys how EK can rely on OU network to the coast, so...

what is your problem? OU and EK have an interline, and therefore EK can sell onto flights to the coast.

    3. Anonymous09:42

The only airline it could have an impact if they start DBV is Turkish Airlines. Actually, impact is the wrong word, they will just be competing for the same type of passengers.

      Anon 09.12

From your tone I can see you are the one with the problem. All I am saying is that some months ago we heard how OU's coastal network will help feed EK's flight.
So now you claim FZ's flight to DBV won't impact EK in ZAG. If it doesn't then it means there were no transfer passengers to begin with.

      Delete
    5. Anonymous10:20

Yes, but the numbers at airports grow, because the demand is stimulated by the introduction of new flights and their related marketing etc. Of course it can happen that once FZ starts flights to DBV, the numbers on OUs services to FRA go up and FZ flies empty because there is the EK service to ZAG, thus increasing DBV´s pax numbers. But this is unrealistic. In a monopoly passenger numbers will always stagnate. In most cases competition and the expansion of services leads to an increase of passenger numbers. So with the introduction both companies will do their utmost to stimulate demand by either price or marketing. prices might go down, but in the end the market will be bigger.

    6. Anonymous10:37

      Dubrovnik is growing 20%
      Zagreb is growing 10%
Combined that is some 740.000 new passengers in 2018 in those two cities

Now, 61.000 seats on DBX-DBV-DBX route (that is maximum capacity for inbound and outbound for all year x 3 pw) if it will be all year (not just seasonal) for sure is not a big impact. That is just fulfill of extra demand.

In summer you can have 100% LF what ever you open. Than there will be no impact at all. Winter is problem. But I have doubts that this route will be all year. Even so, with 2 pw during winter with 70% LF that is some 3.402 maximum capacity per month on flydubai, and that is also not a huge impact.

      More visitors ????

You do understand, Emirates has 90-95% LF on Zagreb flights ???

      And the service just started!
Imagine 3-4 years down the line when service is well established and numbers go up even further.

FlyDubai is just of many carriers that service Croatia, every new carrier will have some impact on other carrier, as Emirates did on Lufthansa and Croatian Airlines, as Iberia did on Lufthansa and BA, when you have more options you choose one that is most convenient.

Current EK loads to ZAG are not that amazing, premium cabins quite empty. Recently, there have been flights where even a B737 would have seats available.

Overall, I dont think ZAG has been a bad route for EK. I could see FZ launching SPU as this is where EK see alot of connections heading to from the ZAG flight. OU's flight to SJJ strangely enough has a number of pax from the EK flight, considering the double daily FZ flights to SJJ.

      ^^^

I wouldnt worry too much on QR as they are more flexible with their fleet, just as we saw the other day when QR sent the A333 to BEG.

We also need to take into consideration that QR has been much longer in ZAG compared to EK. Summer loads for EK were excellent, in all cabins might I add. If we compare BUD for example, they intially had a 2 class A332 (a smaller business cabin with more economy seats) where as ZAG went straight into a B77W in both 3 class (F, J and Y) as well as a 2 class (J and Y) appearing when Y loads demanded for it. To compare, I would say that loads for BUD are similar to ZAG currently. However, EK competes with Wizz who fly to DWC.

What will definately affect the ZAG loads is if FZ decide to launch LJU. As for the frequencies, EK do tend to drop frequencies temporarily on numerous destinations when demand is lighter, airlineroutes had a whole list for last winter.

Because loads are much softer during the winter with mostly transfer passengers from Croatia (exception Christams/New Year 2 week period which could even go back to daily). That is why flights are now 5 per week and might be 4 in February. But from middle of March until end of October B777 for ZAG is no problem. By next winter they will probably develop the market and improve loads in winter and there will be no need to swap at all. My sugesstion would have worked for this winter with near 100% LF on B737 :) but they just started partnership.

BEG is full even after they added more flights this winter. Maybe they will increase it to 9 in summer. An early morning arrival or a late night departure from Belgrade could work.

I think Jat's flight to DXB used to depart at 21.25.

      Delete
    4. Anonymous10:04

Yes JU flights to DXB left BEG in the evening and arrived in the morning in DXB to connect to EK's Australia wave. It was also perfect timing for passengers going from Australia since the plane could do a quick turn around. The only downside was lousy service and the stop in Beirut or Larnaca. After a 14 hour flight from Melbourne going into Jat Airways B737 was like going from day to night, especially back then when EK had good crew and service.

The service Jat offered to Dubai was not that bad. Don't forget that the route was suspended before their service went downhill.

Initially, they served a hot meal right after take off but after a few months they changed it so to LCA it was a sandwich and after LCA a hot meal. I guess it was cheaper like this as they had less meals to serve.

On the return flight, a hot breakfast was served to LCA and then a sandwich to BEG.

    7. Anonymous10:27

Believe me Jat in 2007 and Emirates in 2007 were not comparable. They were way downhill back then. A dirty all white aircraft parked next to shiny Emirates planes. I got yelled at by an old lady crew member because I asked for beer and she told me it was morning and that no one drinks beer in the morning. She did not take into account that I along with 90% of the passengers have already been flying for half a day and were on different time zone as well.

Upsides to those flights was food and it was the quickest way to get from Melbourne to Belgrade at the time.

I am also speaking from personal experience as I used to fly the LCA-BEG sector very often. Actually, I still remember boarding those flights which were always a total and absolute mess. Everyone would move around, passengers brought their own blankets, leftover snacks all over the cabin, crumbs on the floor...

Naturally no one is comparing the service on EK and Jat back then. All I am saying is that the one offered by JU was not as bad as it was later on, shortly before EY took over.

By the way, at that time Jat used to serve their chocolate covered plums that were handed out to the passengers once sandwiches were distributed. The overall service was quite ok. Nothing spectacular but not bad either.

Sarajevo could easily handle EK B777 during the summer.

I don't see how this has anything to do with Etihad since the only ex-Yu route they fly to is Belgrade.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous13:10

well they wanted to route everything from the Balkans via BEG and AUH? Wasnt that the plan?

      Delete
    3. Anonymous14:04

It still is. JU flies everyone from the ExYu region to BEG and from there EY flies to AUH.
These new developments will affect not only EY but JU also.

      Delete
    4. Anonymous14:08

Why would EY want to have their IST and ATH traffic handled through BEG when they fly there directly?

      Delete
    5. Anonymous14:08

Wasn't the mantra on here that no one from the region would step foot on an Air Serbia plane and that they are constantly flying empty around the region?

      Delete
    6. Anonymous14:51

I have friends who have relatives who live in Australia and i asked them how they travel to Macedonia in summer and they told me the last time they visited it was through AUH and BEG.
So, that is not the mantra ;)

@anon 2.08 who talks about IST and ATH??? mixing apples with ....

having one stop possibilities from most of ex-yu bg cities is surely not ideal for EY

      Delete
    8. Anonymous15:05

@anon 2.04 nobody talks here for AUH as final destination, we are talking about two way stop from ex-yu to Asia and Australia. AUH is not so popular as a tourist destinations

"In Zagreb we did not coordinate our suspension with Emirates. This was a coincidence."

This is what people have been saying here for a long time and that the route was in fact cancelled because of poor loads. This also shows that Flydubai and Emirates serve to different passengers because Emirates has been doing very well to ZAG. FZ did not have enough transfers at the time and they were still not working with Emirates.

    1. Anonymous10:30

Emirates will always have decent loads in summer, yields too probably. It's winter that's the problem.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous10:31

Problem is that there is no O&D market between ZAG and DXB like there is between DXB and SJJ, BEG, TGD... that's why FZ failed there.

      Delete
    3. Anonymous13:18

Yes Zagreb is the poorest of the capitals of ex-yu. Therefore no one goes to DXB. Just diaspora flying to Australia. Unlike the rich Serbs and Bosnians who fly to DXB on holidays.

The new codeshare with Emirates and the benifits EK passengers now have flying with FZ (free meals, baggage allowance) will boost FZ's numbers quite a bit.

The biggest boost will come as a result of Flydubai tickets being on sale on Emirates website.

I've flown ZAG-DXB-ADL before EK came to ZAG. The FZ->EK terminal transfer was horrible...waiting for a smelly old minibus in a room with nothing but a toilet...no thanks. I'd much prefer QR in Ljubljana, their transfer process is seamless.
