NEWS FLASH

Twelve passengers on a Croatia Airlines flight between Frankfurt and Zagreb on May 2 have tested positive for the coronavirus Covid-19. A total of 74 passengers and crew were on board the flight. All have been ordered to self-isolate. Croatia Airlines has relieved the crew of their duties as a preventative measure. The carrier said it was fully cooperating with authorities, who have also requested details of passengers flying on the same route the following day. There was a total of 110 travellers on board that flight. Frankfurt has been Croatia Airlines’ only international destination for the past month-and-a-half, providing a vital link for Croatian nationals to return home. As of May 4, all passengers on board Croatia Airlines flights are required to wear a mask or face covering.

    This is not good news.

According to Washington post this is how infection spreads on the plane

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/trafficandcommuting/scientists-think-they-know-ways-to-combat-viruses-on-airplanes-theyre-too-late-for-this-pandemic/2020/04/20/83279318-76ab-11ea-87da-77a8136c1a6d_story.html

And if 1 passenger in average spreads infection to 12 other passengers it means that this whole plane is now in danger

Wearing of face masks onboard was imposed way too late.

I would like to know if all passengers were wearing face mask during all the flight on May 2.
      Anyone knows?

Face masks doesn’t fully protect you from the virus. It just slows down the spread. Wearing Masks or not can still get you the virus

The probability is much smaller if one wears the mask

Wearing masks became mandatory from 5th of May on Croatia Airlines flights so this flight was before that so probably most of the people didn't have masks then

Most of the pax were wearing masks on all of those FRA flights before 4th. On 3rd all pax were wearing masks. Nothing can totally protect you from contracting virus, but if two people in contact both wear masks, the probability is significantly lower.

Yes because you cannot get infected on repatriation flights

There are many more regular than repatriation flights. Therefore the probability is much higher

Great example of EU bureaucracy behaving stupidly. Montenegro has almost no new cases in weeks, Spain has thousands of new cases every day, but EU bureaucrats will allow people from Spain but not from Montenegro?

No- people within the EU will also have to quarantaine. The EU is a common market. Of course you will first close the external borders.

LOL that would only work if you close them before virus gets inside, while the hotspot is outside. Once you have a large outbreak within borders, closing them DOES NOT help. Even with quarantine, allowing passengers from Spain but not from Montenegro is not some sensible, expert opinion. It is just dumb EU protectionism.

No one was saying USA is a good example. Before you tried to switch topic we were criticizing bureaucratic EU decision to keep external borders closed as if there was no cases within EU and threat was only from outside, when in some cases (e.g. Spain and Montenegro) the opposite is true.

I like the USA, it's a really nice country. Croatia should look at them more closely for many different things.

We need to remain cautious and vigilant at all times, corona is a dangerous virus that has taken way too many lives until now. Germany is behaving irresponsible and so is Croatia for not requiring a valid corona test before people board the flight back to ZAG.

I do not think that corona test is obligatory for transfer countries and I believe that in this case it was purely mistake from Croatia

Croatia needs to be more responsible, why didn't they request a valid corona test before these people entered the plane? It's just seems like a silly mistake that could have been avoided with some forward thinking.

No Problem! Corona Test sounds good. Costs 190€ . The question is who pays for it? I have a flight booked in 4 weeks time. When I booked the flight for 350€ it did not say I have to pay additional 190€ for a corona Test. Can I get my money back- no of course not!

@you dont need to wait until you to go to the airport for the test (which are private tests thus so expensive). Im sure you can test yourself somewhere in your city

People travelling and having to pay 190€ just to enter will certainly not travel. These measures will equal border closures. Imagine a family flying somewhere and paying for 4 people 800€ just to get permission. They will rather cancel their trip.

If people are really forced to pay that outrageous amount then I can see this summer season suffer even more. It's a lot of money especially for families that might be travelling with children. For a family of four that an additional expense of €760 which is a lot of money. Croatia needs to use its political influence in the EU to block this somehow.

This says a lot about flying in these times. The risk is real and should not be neglected just because someone needs to stay afloat.
We are all affected by job losses and economic downturn but we should not victimize our health and lives. If we don’t manage to defend ourselves at least for one year after 70 years of peace we should feel ashamed of us and our “progress” we have made as humanity.
