Air Serbia gets all clear for US flights

The United States Department of Transportation (DoT) has issued Air Serbia a permit to operate "scheduled foreign air transportation of persons, property and mail from points behind the Republic of Serbia, via the Republic of Serbia and intermediate points to a point or points in the United States and beyond", in an order served yesterday evening. Furthermore, the carrier has been granted rights to operate scheduled all-cargo services between the US and any points, as well as charter transportation of persons, property and mail. The permit approval comes just over seven months after a request was initially submitted by the airline, during which both the company and its hub airport underwent inspections and checks by US authorities.

The Acting Director of the Office of International Aviation at the DoT, Brian Hedberg, said in his final order, "We make final our findings and conclusions as stated in the order and award to Air Serbia a.d. Belgrade the foreign air carrier permit. Unless disapproved by the President of the United States under 49 USC §41307 [code title for transportation under US law], this order shall become effective on the 61st day after its submission". The order was submitted for review under 49 USC §41307 on January 12, 2016. The 61st day was March 14. Since the President did not disapprove this order before that date, it became effective this Monday. Furthermore, there were no objections by other parties, such as airlines, unions or other businesses either.

As a result, Air Serbia's flights to New York are no longer pending government approval and ticket sales will no longer be subject to this designation. The airline will become the first national carrier in the former Yugoslavia to operate transatlantic flights in 24 years. Furthermore, the route will become the first long haul service operated by a former Yugoslav carrier in sixteen years, the last one being Belgrade - Beijing, terminated in 2000. Services to New York will launch on June 23 and will run five times per week with an Airbus A330-200 jet. The aircraft, leased from Jet Airways, is expected to arrive in Belgrade during the first half of May.

The process actually went by quickly. Usually it would take up to a year for an airline that has never flown to the US from a country that has had no flights to the US.

Huh? JAT flew to America 24 years ago, from this same Belgrade, in Serbia, that the new flights are being launced out of.

Hogan said new North America routes won't come for a couple of years (and remember Hogan was the first one to say NY would launch either in late 2015 or in 2016). Last November Vucic "slipped" information that Beijing would be next and I doubt he made it up because he isn't smart enough just to pull that one out of the bag. He probably heard it discussed and of course being the person he is couldn't keep his mouth shut.

With a second plane you could TECHNICALLY open up 2 new routes with the following schedule: 5 p/w JFK, 3 p/w YYZ and 3 p/w PEK. I am suprised the so called experts on here like "Purger" "Nemjee" "JATBEGMEL" "Aleksandar Stojanovic" etc... did not mention that before

Looks like it will get maintenance, cabin work and repaint in April/May and could arrive in BEG by late May or early June according to some comments.

Beograd odnosi 2.626.637.925,81 dinara. U cilju efikasnijeg servisiranja dugovanja koja se preuzimaju, jedan deo obaveza će servisirati Republika Srbija direktnim plaćanjem sledećim poveriocima Air Serbia a.d. Beograd - Aerodrom Nikola Tesla a.d. Beograd, Naftna industrija Srbije a.d. Novi Sad, Direktorat civilnog vazduhoplovstva Republike Srbije, Jat tehnika d.o.o. Beograd, Kontrola letenja Srbije i Crne Gore - SMATSA d.o.o. Beograd, Beogradska banka a.d. Beograd u stečaju, Investbanka a.d. Beograd.

I have no idea how will BEG perform for QR in the future, but saying it is making progress from 20, 30 to 120 pax over the example of one flight (also the first one, so god knows how many media or similar tickets were given) is really extremely optimistic...on that note, I am sure first BEG JFK flight will be packed, but that doesn't mean that it will be like that constantly.

anon 4:22 I was making conclusions based on info on previous loads which were posted here in addition to info from a friend who travelled twice. Of course we cannot make conclusions based on one flight, but loads did increase to acceptable numbers and that is why QR is going direct.

QR's loads keep on improving. It's not easy for them given the size of the local market and all of the airlines they have to compete with. Their brand awareness keeps on improving which should make it easier to fill those seats in the future.

How on earth can you compare BEG and ZAG when Belgrade has far more competition to the east:

      Aeroflot: 14x
      Turkish Airlines: 14x
      Etihad: 7x
      Air Serbia to AUH: 7x
      Flydubai: 4x
      Pegasus: 4x
      JU to SVO: 7x
      Qatar: 4x

All of these are competing for some of the same passengers. That's quite a lot of capacity for an airport the size of Belgrade.

So that is 61 weekly flights from BEG

      In same time ZAG has
      7x Aeroflot
      14x Turkish
      5x flyDubai
      2x Croatia to LED
      10x Qatar
      1x Korean

38 flights, but you have to know that there is

35x Croatia + Lufthansa to FRA
28x Croatia + Lufthansa to MUC
33x Croatia + Austrian to VIE

where most of connection to East come throw.

Yeah but if you look at it like that then when it comes to BEG you also have to add 14 weekly to Rome and all the frequencies to Munich and Frankfurt since they do carry some Serbia-Asia passengers. We can even add Lot as well.

Finally, like I already mentioned, Belgrade is far more competitive given that the second set of frequencies you mentioned are all operated by one airline and its partner (LH/OS + OU).

Also, the 2 weekly to LED doesn't count as there are no onward connections being offered and as far as I remember KE operates charter flights, not scheduled ones.

If we could KE and OU to LED then we should also add JU to KBP (6x), IST (7x), WAW (7x) and so on.

    20. Anonymous08:44

KE is charter but if there would not be those flights passengers will use more Qatar, Lufthansa, Turkish, flyDubai connections from Seoul.

Of course, but if we go that far than you have LOT to ZAG, CSA to ZAG, even AF (14x) LX (20x) and BA (7x) for connections to Far East destinations.

        Reply
    21. Nemjee09:13

I highly doubt anyone flies to the Far East from ZAG on AF or BA, even LX is pushing it a bit. Let's be realistic here.

Then should we also count the Qeshm charters to Belgrade or JU's 10x weekly to Prague and so on? If we start doing it then this discussion will become pointless despite BEG winning in the end. It's a well known fact that BEG is more competitive, nothing wrong with that.

This discussion is really going in funny direction. Belgrade indeed has more East oriented competition while Croatia as a whole enjoys more demand from that part of the world. Ultimately, life is easier for those carriers in Croatia as competition is currently lower and demand higher.

I don't know but in my opinion the introduction of HAM was a great move. Lots of potential when it comes to the Balkans. I still hope that at some point they will think of NUE since there is a massive ex-YU population there. It's a shame that they decided against the Western frequency increases that were previously announced.

Why should JU rely on an airline that might not be around in a few months? AB is welcome to code-share but Air Serbia should distance itself from them as much as it can. When it comes to North America they have Alitalia, KLM, Air France... in addition to their own flights.

It's a shame JU didn't get some of the A319/320 from Alitalia when EY bought them, the same way that leech Air Berlin did.

      Anon 16.05

Well, all of these increases are taking place during the time when one Atr is freed from SOF while the rest will most likely get Aviolet. Unless a new aircraft arrives there is no way in which they can do it without them.

Air Berlin's performance has been going from bad to worse. They are collapsing under their own weight. Their planes are full but their costs are just too high.

Also, for the longest time now they couldn't figure out what kind of airline they want to be. One day they were a legacy then tomorrow they switched to lowcost then they wanted to be a hybrid and so on.

To make a bad situation worse, Ryanair is attacking them from all sides and they have been retreating for quite some time. NUE is a great example of how AB gets replaced by FR.

Even though they did make some progress, it seems that it's too little too late.

They will unless they find a way to finance themselves since Etihad can no longer throw money their way. Just like Adria, they are experiencing liquidity issues.

With Eurowings slowly taking off and both Ryanair and easyJet expanding they are running out of time.

Svaka čast cijelom timu AS i BEG na ovako velikom uspjehu.
