I'm afraid Croatia Airlines are not allowed to insist only Croatian passport holders can apply. By E.U. law any E.U. citizen has a legal right to apply and work there.

True that any EU citizen has a legal right to apply. He and she can also work there providing selected and trained. But they will not be selected and trained if they don't speak Croatian. In this case Croatian passport comes as a guarantee that applicant speaks Croatian. Maybe it's not listed here but knowledge of Croatian language is one of the requirements. Cabin crew training in OU is performed in Croatian. The same case with, just for example German in Lufthansa or Italian in Alitalia or any other Italian airline. And even if applicant is the speaker of the particular language, can still be refused with various explanations. No EU regulations against it.

In a civilised EU member state, you cannot require that the candidate be of certain nationality, the employer can only require that the candidate has right to live and work in the EU. Anything else would be considered a discrimination, the same as banning people from other races, sexual orientation, etc.

Alas, in the Balkans, ... still in the Dark Age.

The language requirement is another story, although all crew members are required to have a decent command of the English language and training could such be easily performed in English language.

Not with the Balkan mentality though.

Just for your info, one of the first cabin crew, starting working for OU back in 1991, and still working, is black lady originating from Guinea. Their Cabin crew manager till recently was Italian by ethnicity. They have Serbian, Slovenian, Hungarian, Albanian, Czech people working there. Also people of different sexual orientation. And I am very critical about OU and it's very badly managed but this is not one of the issues they have and let's please try not to make problem where there is no problem. Balkan mentality has nothing to do with cabin crew selection, it's only the language. And Croatian is, unlike for example German not one of the "world's languages" , known and spoken everywhere.

Considering the army of useless employees in CTN, no wonder they are not aware of that.

Fully agree about the army of useless CTN employees, but this they know I believe. As written above, the language (Croatian) is what makes difference.

“..employer can only require that the candidate has right to live and work in the EU.”

I have an EU passport, can I apply to work (for example) Lufthansa if I don’t speak German?
