NEWS FLASH
Wizz Air has confirmed it will launch new flights between London Luton Airport and Pristina this summer season. As reported by EX-YU Aviation News on Tuesday, the new service will become the carrier's second destination in Pristina after Budapest, which is set to launch this April. Flights from London will be introduced on June 24 and run twice per week, each Tuesday and Saturday. Further flight details can be found here.

There are plenty of opportunities from PRN. I'm sure whatever they launch will be a huge success. Market potential was never the issue, disagreement on fees is what's preventing fast-paced growth.
DeletePRN can't risk losing the business from other airlines that bring over 1.7m pax annually and pay full fees.
DeleteLower fees for fewer services at the airport makes sense, but no unfair advantages please.
Well, there already is the new destination discount at PRN, which is perfectly fine for a time limited period, given how risky opening new destinations is and how long routes take to mature financially. It's just a question of how large the incentive should be and what form it should take.
DeleteI recognize the attempt to segregate from what's been labeled as unfair in SKP. That one specifically I find duplicitous. The sooner this fictitious argument is dropped the better. It will achieve nothing anyway except justify PRN airport management complacency. :)

DeleteJust to be clear, by unfair advantage I mean two separate airlines enjoy the same service at an airport but one pays less than the other.
For example, DS flies the BSL-PRN route and pays X amount of Euros to PRN for utilising its airport facilities. Unfair advantage would be if, say, W6 flies the same BSL-PRN route but pays X-5 amount of Euros to PRN for utilising the same airport facilities.
Incentives to open new routes and add frequencies are another topic and are available to all airlines.
Nothing to do with SKP. They've done very well out of W6 and it's been a win-win for both sides. Kudos to them.

Will be interesting what they do with their crew as hiring local British crew will cost much more than the ones in Hungary, Romania or Bulgaria.
ReplyDeleteTrue, at the moment they are paying some cabin crew less than half of minimum wage in UK. They will have to step up or make it a "temporary base" and rotate the crew to avoid paying taxes in UK.
DeleteI think that's what they will do. Otherwise it will raise their costs considerably. One thing they can do is to have the aircraft based in LTN operate to routes which have little to no competition which will allow them to increase their fares.

DeleteLaunching of this route is somewhat surprising considering that anyone who's flown LTN-SKP with W6 is aware that most of PRN-bound passengers from LON fly with W6 to SKP. I suspect it will impact W6 loads to SKP.
ReplyDeleteI would have preferred U2 to launch LGW or STN-PRN flights over W6 (or U2 or JP) from LTN, which hands down is the worst airport in Europe considering passenger charges and overall experience.
I wish W6 well nonetheless.

I agree with Visit Kosovo about the potential impact on SKP-LTN. This is the route that probably had the highest % of Kosovar passengers from SKP. I'm sure it will be a big success. I wouldn't be surprised to see a Wizz based aircraft in PRN next year, especially if SKP doesn't get the 4th in the meantime.

DeleteSurprising that they're willing to risk their loads on LTN-SKP route. Almost all, no exaggeration, of PRN-bound passengers from LON fly W6. It's not an insignificant number. So, my guess is that they plan to charge higher fares to PRN to make up for any loss of revenue on LTN-SKP route.
If they don't, somebody else will. Good move on reaching an agreement.
DeleteFares on Wizz (easy, Ryan) don't work that way. Higher fares are an indication of stronger demand and move variably every day.

ReplyDeleteI still see Easy-Wizz merger at some point in not so distant future. Vueling/Eurowins/Transavia are getting stronger by the day, not to mention Ryanair. If there is a good match, this is it.
