China eyes Trebinje Airport project

The Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) has expressed interest in partnering up with the government of the Entity of Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina for the construction of a commercial airport in Trebinje, in the country's south. AVIC will undertake an analysis of a site at Rapti Zupci, a village near Trebinje, where the airport complex is planned to be built. The company first expressed interest in the project in 2010 and last month met with representatives of the entity government to discuss the potential investment. "Every country would be honoured to have such a company [AVIC] as its partner and we are delighted they have expressed their readiness to continue their cooperation with us", the government said.

Last year, local authorities in Trebinje announced their intention to resume plans for the construction of the infamous airport. The government forked out 820.000 euros between 2009 and 2011 for project documentation for a 2.6 kilometre runway and a terminal capable of handling 260.000 passengers per year, only to give up on the idea two years later after naming the airport's General Manager and contracting an Austrian consultant to identify potential routes. The government has since said the study conducted by the Austrian consultant was incomplete. A subsequent tender for the drafting of a new development strategy was cancelled.

Trebinje

Aviation Industry Corporation of China is a state-owned aerospace and defence conglomerate. It is ranked 159th on the Fortune Global 500 list and has over 100 subsidiaries, 27 listed companies and half a million employees across the globe. Due to its natural beauty, it is believed Trebinje could attract a considerable number of tourists. However, the town is just over thirty kilometres north-east of Dubrovnik and ninety kilometres north-west of Tivat, making the viability of a future airport in the area questionable. Bosnia and Herzegovina currently boasts four commercial airports, which handled 1.073.739 passengers during the January - July period. A new commercial airport is also planned for Bihać where a portion of the future runway is currently under construction.

This project probably relates to parallel move by Chinese to take over and develop Neum as their main port and hub for booming container traffic between Asia and Adriatic.

Many Chinese tourists are visiting Trebinje on their joint Serbia-Bosnia-Montenegro package. In fact during first half of the year Chinese were fourth most common visitors to Trebinje after Serbs, Turks and French. So it's natural Chinese interest in the town will grow.

Chinese tourists are now the new trend in the Balkans and it´s quite normal for people to become curious. the Chinese tourists have increased simply because the middle class is growing and can afford a trip to Eastern Europe with their salaries. Simple stuff.
Serbia and BiH are both cheap countries for them to afford a 1-2 week holiday period.

Chinese might build it but Chinese will only pay for it temporarily. All the Chinese projects being built around the world are actually built on Chinese loans which have to be repaid to China. Look at all the projects in Africa. Some of the countries are now in so much debt to China that they don't know what to do.

Ryanair does not fly to expensive Dubrovnik airport (exc seasonal to Dublin) nor congested, night-flying restricted Tivat. Wizzair does not fly at all to DBV and TIV. If there was a nearby Trebinje airport with 24/7 facilities and very low fees both airlines would easily come up with half a dozen to a dozen routes. Add PSO flights to BNX and BEG and airport makes sense.

Saša... East Sarajevo has an airport. It's called "Sarajevo International Airport". There is no need for a brand new airport in that region. Btw, the entire area (East Sarajevo plus surrounding small towns and villages) is home for only 122.000 people inluding the area around Serbian border. That is how many people live in one of Sarajevo's urban municipalities. Why building a new aiport?!

    Samo da se podsetimo https://www.exyuaviation.com/2013/02/trebinje-airport-doubles-passenger.html
The Minister for Transport and Infrastructure in the government of the Entity of Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Nedeljko Čubrilović, has announced that Trebinje Airport has recorded exceptional results in 2012, doubling its passenger numbers on the year before. However, the only problem is there is no airport in Trebinje. The gaffe made by the minister has become the talk of the town with one resident offering fake return first class tickets from Trebinje to Los Angeles on the Internet, with local food specialities and wine served on board.

A sta imate da kazete na ostatak teksta? Izvolite copy/paste da vas postedim extra klikova - Despite the bizarre statement made by Minister Čubrilović, over the past several years thousands of euros have been invested in the nonexistent airport in Trebinje. It remains unknown as to how this money has been spent. In 2008, Zoran Okilj was named as CEO of Trbinje Airport. Construction of the airport was first planned to begin in 2009. However, in 2010, Milorad Dodik, the President of Republika Srpska, said that a Chinese corporation, which has experience in building large capital projects, was interested in Trebinje Airport. “We will know more in a month or two. All necessary documentation has been sent to the company”, Mr. Dodik said at the time. The government of Republika Srpska spent 1.6 million Convertible Bosnian Marks (820.000 euros) for the Trebinje Airport project documentation.

I can only see it as being useful as a diversion airport in winter when Dubrovnik airport is often closd because of the bura...but I guess Croatia Airlines would still divert to SPU....they never go to Tivat (I guess that can create visa issues for some pax).

The Chinese announcement may either be a PR stunt, or a hint towards some more strategical thinking. If "LQTB" is envisioned as part of the New Silk road / belt initiative, then it may as well become reality... money wouldn't be a problem, at least not for the creditors. Now this does not preclude the airport from becoming a stillborn (hint : VCRI)

Stalno zaboravljate da su skoro svi aerodromi profitabilni dok sve aviokompanije moramo da dotiramo od Vardara do Triglava.
