Croatia Airlines in talks with Boeing over MAX order

Croatia Airlines is in discussions with Boeing over the potential order of MAX family aircraft as part of its fleet renewal process. According to the “AvioRadar” portal, the two sides have been holding talks as the Croatian national carrier is due to select which aircraft type will form the core of its future fleet, following similar negotiations with Airbus and Embraer. “Boeing is currently in talks with Croatia Airlines concerning the renewal of its single-aisle fleet. We strong believe that the 737 MAX family is the perfect choice for Croatia Airlines’ short and medium haul network. The 737 MAX offers unmatched performance for smaller markets with the possibility of increasing aircraft capacity within the same family of aircraft in order to meet increased demand, which we expect to occur on the Croatian market in the coming years”, the US plane manufacturer said.

Croatia Airlines plans to renew its fleet as part of its post-Covid strategy which could include the replacement of both its Airbus and Dash 8 Q400 aircraft. Both Airbus, with its A220 jet, and Embraer, with its E2 family, have pitched their products to the Croatian carrier. The airline is now expected to make a final decision on the jet type before having its post-Covid strategy approved by its owner - the Croatian government. Croatia Airlines last operated Boeing aircraft in the late 1990s before making the switch to Airbus. The airline’s fleet once primarily consisted of Boeing 737-200s and ATR turboprops.

The Boeing 737 MAX is the fourth generation of the Boeing 737. The series is available in four variants, offering between 138 to 204 seats in typical two-class configuration. The 737 MAX 7, MAX 8 and MAX 9 are intended to replace the 737-700, -800, and -900 respectively, while a further-stretched 737 MAX 10 is also available on the market. If the Croatian carrier were to select MAX jets, it would likely opt for the MAX 7, which can seat between 153 and 172 passengers, depending on configuration. For its part, the national carrier said, “The post-Covid strategy confirms that Croatia Airlines is to increase the efficiency of its business operations and competitiveness, and that, in the coming period, the company is to manage key operational and structural challenges that include fleet renewal, and flight network optimisation throughout the year”.

      They are in talks with Boeing not just to get them come up with a financially FAVORABLE offer, but also to put pressure on Airbus and Embraer to do the same. It's called NEGOTIATIONS.

      Airbus has a long waiting list, don't see why would they negotiate right now. What's the realistic delivery timeline, if OU chooses A220 or 737MAX? If delivery of A220 is gonna take 3+ years please go for something else. OU needs some plan for this and next year asap.

      Actually nothing is happening in OU. Plenkovic is buying his armchair in Brussels with 220's, as he has already done with Rafals. We shall continue paying for the loss making model of feeding LH, and hundreds of uhljebs who don't care about it, just with the new planes, 220's, which is already decided, and all these around is just a show for the general public.

    They are doing that because they need to show 3 offers from different producers. That's the main rule for public procurement here in Croatia.
    I believe OU will decide for A220 I think that's the best choice.

      No way MAX, I agree. They are too big for feeder plane and don't have range for any change in operations model. But disagree about 220/320neo. Much better choice is Embraer family, to cover for Dash and 319, and existing markets, and 321XLR to cover for new markets with high volumes of traffic, and change of existing feed only model

    Absolute joke!

    OU does not need 737 MAX as: 1. Does not have the market for Max; 2. Too expensive for OU; 3. These planes will never be filled more than 60% or max 70% of their capacity.

    In my opinion the best option for OU would be Airbus220. It fits the company's size perfectly (and I think it's the perfect match for AirSerbia too).

    Boeing is being very aggressive with securing orders after they lost a few quite high profile orders from KLM and Qantas. So they are likely to offer big discounts and a very good deal.

      MAX 7 has the largest range of the MAX family, due to the fact that all variants have the same fuel capacity, and the smaller the aircraft, the less fuel it will burn.

      Max 8,9,and 10 have range between 6110 and 6570 km. Distance between ZAG and NYC, the shortest one, is 6900 km. So, only Max 7 with its range of 7130 km can make it, from technical and mechanical point of view. Commercially, Max 7 is not viable. A321XLR has range of 8700 km, which mean it can reach even "behind" NYC, Washington or Chicago, for example, plus its normal long haul capacity is about 170-180 passengers (maximum 240), while Max 7 normal long haul capacity is only 120-130 (maximum 170), with approximately the same operational costs. So much less passengers and much less money. Not to mention Max" image ".

      Those range figures are without ACTs, which would be pretty much required for any long haul, and that's what A321XLR has as well. If you include ACTs, then the range is increased substantially.

    Who knows maybe they switch to Boeing. I mean the only reason they switched from Boeing to Airbus was because of political pressure from the government which was trying to secure EU candidacy. Who knows what the government is trying to do now. That's what happens when politics runs this airline.

    Businesslike, for Croatia Airlines, the MAX makes no sense. The slightly higher capacity compared to E2-190/195 doesn't make up the significantly higher (read: almost double) purchase/lease price and fuel consumption. However I wouldn't be surprised if they will end up with the MAX. At the end it comes to the manufacturer that pays the most to the decisionmakers, being the government. With the MAX being the most expensive aircraft comparing to A220 and E2, they will also be able to pay the highest bribes.

    They can lease new A319, A320 as Bulgaria Air did!
    Dash can replace them in the coming years with A220 or E2.
    In my opinion, they should focus on new destinations from Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik.

    Word has it that a dirt cheap power by the hour arrangement has been offered for the MAX. OU management jaws have dropped!

    Considering a F16 arrangement was not made for military aircraft, the states will be pushing for this business.
