The Miami Dade Aviation Department has confirmed that Air Serbia plans to commence nonstop flights between Belgrade and Florida’s largest city. Emir Pineda, Director of Marketing and Air Service Development at the Miami Dade Aviation Department, which runs Miami Airport, told the “Miami Today” daily, “We are constantly in contact and in communications with carriers about air service development and air routes to Miami. Discussions with Air Serbia have taken place. Air Serbia will be flying to Belgrade, and we hope to hear from them on their startup scheduled sometime later this year, potentially early next year”.
In February, Serbia’s Ambassador to the United States, Marko Djurić, said Miami would become the airline’s next destination in the United States. “Miami is next in the US. Discussions about the new Miami service have been taking place since at least last year. Air Serbia is pretty far in talks with MIA [Miami International Airport]. I think it will happen this year”, Mr Djurić said. The Ambassador previously noted ticket sales for the new service could begin by the end of the year. For its part, Air Serbia noted in 2023 that its third destination in North America would be added in 2025, with either Miami or Toronto to be introduced, while 2024 would see the expansion of its China network.
Mr Djurić, who is expected to take on a new high-ranking post in government, added, “Air Serbia would start with two to three flights a week and then hopefully ramp up. MIA is doing a really good job in convincing people to come to Miami. They are really making sure airlines feel like they are welcome”. An estimated 50.000 Serbian - Americans live in Florida. However, the Ambassador said the airline anticipates catering for transfer passengers on the route as well, particularly the large Jewish community in the Sunshine State. Serbia will open a new consulate in the city later this year, with both diplomatic and trade representatives.
Some 12.000 people flew point to point between Belgrade and Miami in 2023 on a single ticket. This figure grows to 120.000 passengers if the markets in the former Yugoslavia are taken into account, along with Albania, Bulgaria, Romania and Greece, while a further 26.000 flew indirectly between Moscow and Miami. However, as noted by the Ambassador himself, it is Israel which holds the biggest potential for transfer passengers, with over 200.000 travelling indirectly between the country and Miami last year. The absolute majority of the transfer traffic between Miami and the Balkans is currently handled by Turkish Airlines.
they should launch MIA mid December this year. that would be perfect timing.

DeleteThe first thing said by Mr. Clapper that was ever true
DeleteMIA is not gonna happen.
Delete^ yeah sure. Miami Airport is lying.
DeletePretty sure that will help many Albanians to go to Miami through this Airline
DeleteWould it be a seasonal or year round route?
ReplyDeleteYear round
DeleteMiami is a year-round destination
DeleteToronto being summer seasonal should not prevent Air Serbia from launching the service. Seasonality is not a major problem:
Delete“The issue of seasonality with the growth of the long-haul fleet is getting less and less problematic."
https://www.exyuaviation.com/2024/03/air-serbia-and-cuba-discuss-potential.html
You took that out off context. If you read the article that you linked, he is referring to deployment of wide body aircraft during winter.
DeleteActually it is spot on. Air Serbia had some concerns in the past about launching summer seasonal services such as Toronto as aircraft would sit idle during winter. That's no longer a problem as 3rd and 4th widebody arrives later this year.
Delete"“The issue of seasonality with the growth of the long-haul fleet is getting less and less problematic.""
DeleteIt's getting less and less problematic exactly because they are avoiding seasonally challenging destinations like Toronto and deploying their aircraft elsewhere
Air Serbia reducing JFK from daily in summer to 3 weekly in winter is not a problem but Torono going from 2 to 0 would be a problem?!%?
Delete12,000 passengers is around 30 per day...
ReplyDelete@09:04
DeleteAnalitičar style math.
Well 12000 divided by 365 is 32.
Delete@09:09 Briliant 😂
DeleteProbably highly seasonal!
DeleteJU said it is less seasonal than Toronto.
Delete@09:04 Dont forget the transfer pax from SKP TGD TIA SJJ ZAG LJU OHD SKG ATH SOF VAR OTP DBV SPU which will use this route. Thats why other numbers are mentioned in the article, of course 12k is not enough for this route to be launched.
Delete@09:04
DeleteMIA would be 2pw for a star. Even JFK is hardly daily. That is some 100 rotations per year. So it would make 120 pax just from BEG (12000/100=120). Count at least 100-120 transfers to that and there you are with solid LF for a A332. It's not that simple as you think. Also it will generate additional pax once were route is lounched.
It will be difficult to compete against Turkish Airlines on MIA route.
Delete@09:04 Those same airports also have transfer passengers to Toronto. Fair comparison would have numbers for regional demand for both Miami and Toronto side-by-side.
Delete@09:53 Do the same calculation for Toronto
DeleteThere is a lot more competition to Toronto.
Delete@10:07
DeleteAgain, it's not that simple, numbers for Toronto will be OK for 2pw but it's, as Marek said, uni-directiional.
Not by much. But there is also more demand to Toronto from the region, that's why you need to put demand numbers side-by-side.
Delete@10:25 Remember that Chicago decision came to ORD vs YYZ, not ORD vs MIA. Miami was not even in the second place.
Delete@09:56 Not true!!! It is illogical to fly 4 more hours via Istanbul like me. 2 h were from BEG, and 2 more from IST. In meantime, I missed plane, due late. AS is smarter and logical solution from BEG and neighbor countries
DeleteJU will need to organize and densify their regional network to make these flights work then. one or two daily wont be enough to the likes of ZAG, SOF, OTP to capture the transfer market.
DeleteAgree with 11:48 anonymous. The extra travel time to go through IST would make me choose JU as long as the prices were similar. 4 more hours of travel is exhausting and there are additional refreshment/meal expenses in that layover.
DeleteNe treba izmisljati i lagati.
There are at least a dozen flights from MIA to YYZ daily.
ReplyDeleteWhy is this important to randomly mention?
DeleteRumors are they will announce it very soon.
ReplyDeleteјел иду неки избори?
DeleteNo.
Delete@14:41 Idu. Beograd u junu
DeleteToronto fans won't be happy.
ReplyDeleteIt would be great to see same numbers from the last paragraph, but for Toronto.
DeleteReality is that YYZ is completely disinterested in attracting foreign carriers. Canada is quite infamous for restricting foreign carriers in favour of Canadian carriers. Not to mention the high fees for operating into YYZ, restrictive bilaterals, lack of partners in Canada, all which have pushed YYZ down the list of priorities despite the higher demand.
DeleteYou are soo right, yyz is way overpriced and that airport is in a bad shape like the whole economy situation in that country. Homelessness is out of control and people are leaving Canada in a huge nbers ( they are able to attract new comers from India and Pakistan mostly). I do believe jU is well awarecof the situation in that country.
DeletejU probably is awarecof the nbers, but yous never know.
DeleteAir Serbia did add its code on ITA's FCO-YYZ flights.
DeleteBEG-FCO 06.45-08.20
Connection: 01.55
FCO-YYZ 10.15-14.05
YYZ-FCO 16.40-07.15
Connection: 02.10
FCO-BEG 09.25-11.00
Price: 142.321 RSD or 1.215 EUR
Not the cheapest deal out there I'd say.
I'm surprised by the demand between Israel and Miami.
ReplyDeleteCurrently TLV is not served by TK and JU
DeleteMIA is served by El Al.
DeleteObviously not enough to cover demand. And they just started last year.
DeleteДа ли сте чули за Кипар?
DeleteJU could easily restart TLV when the time comes for it.
DeleteI think we can safely say they have chosen MIA over Toronto.
ReplyDeleteSmart choice
DeleteSounds like political choice the way ambassador described it
DeleteJU first mentioned it over a year ago before anyone else did
DeleteJU have mentioned numerous other destinations as well. Tehran, Ionnina, Baku, Kazakhstan to name a couple. Canada and YYZ are obviously not really interested in having JU if JU are looking at other destinations with much lower demand compared to YYZ.
DeleteSeems MIA offers generous start up incentives.
ReplyDeleteIt is also likely cheaper to fly to than YYZ.
Delete1400 km longer return trip to Miami is not cheap(er)
DeleteP2P demand to Toronto is certainly bigger than Miami.
DeleteSure it is cheaper. The landing fees and jet fuel half price in MIA then YYZ..
DeleteSerbia also has open skies with the US unlike with Canada. JU have Jetblue with whom they codeshare, as well as a decent interline agreement with AA which is interested in further expansion. Unlike YYZ, MIA is actively seeking new carriers and are willing to offer incentives.
DeleteLast month: The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA), which manages Toronto’s Pearson Airport, has told EX-YU Aviation News it is still working on establishing flights to Belgrade.
DeleteIt seems YYZ is actively working on it.
And obviously their "efforts" have shown results.
DeleteIf they start flights to Miami, they should work on a codeshare with American Airlines.
ReplyDeleteIs it likely to have two US codeshare partners?
DeleteIt's possible but I doubt it'll happen. AA have their TATL JV agreements with European carriers (BA, AY, IB). If JU were to seek One World membership then I see JU joining the JV.
DeleteWow this is really happening.
ReplyDelete2 years ago, I would never have had Miami on the cards for their third destination in the US :D
ReplyDelete+1
DeleteThose numbers in the last paragraph do not take into account passengers that fly from Fort Lauderdale which is very close to Miami and who would certainly use Miami if there was a nonstop flight.
ReplyDeleteAgree. I use FLL to Europe.
DeleteHow long will BEG-MIA take?
ReplyDeleteAbout 11 hours from Beg and 10 hours from Mia.
DeleteSo we might see Miami before we see Shanghai/Guangzhou?
ReplyDeletePeople need to improve their reading skills before commenting
Delete"For its part, Air Serbia noted in 2023 that its third destination in North America would be added in 2025, with either Miami or Toronto to be introduced, while 2024 would see the expansion of its China network."
Miami would be a very nice addition.
ReplyDeleteReally looking forward to the launch
DeleteExcellent news
ReplyDeleteNice to see North American market developing for JU.
ReplyDeleteScratch North from that sentence to make it true.
DeleteWould be really nice to see Miami. It would be a nice connection to Central and South America
ReplyDeletePeople need to stop with this "connection to Central and South America" nonsense. No one in their right mind would connect from Europe to Latin America through MIA, because (i) it requires a US visa, (ii) you need to clear US immigration each way, as there is no concept of airside transfer in the US, (iii) you need to clear US customs and recheck your baggage, also each way, and (iv) all of the above requires massive layover times.
Delete+1 Vlad
Delete@Vlad
DeleteValid points, however for the right price/schedule people will do it. People also self transfer between airports for the right price. I'm not saying it'll be massively popular but I wouldn't rule out that possibility entirely.
@Anon 14:59
DeleteEven if so, it's highly unlikely that a MIA trip on JU + self-booked connection to Latin America can work out so much cheaper than a direct connection at a European hub airport.
I agree with Vlad. I was one of those that was high on the Caribbean/S.America connections, but it really doesn't make sense when you consider all of the other options. Having said this, AA does have a decent domestic hub in MIA. For example, they currently have 7 daily flights to MCO, that should attract some travelers heading to Disney.
DeleteI wouldn' t agree with Vlad..I personally fly to Central or South America twice a year, a most of the times I fly via Miami, because it's quite a lot cheper..From MIA you can find crazy cheap deals for Cancun, MEX, Panama City, Bogota, Quito, Lima, even most of Brazilian cities..Not to mention Caribbeans..And for MIA you can always find good deals from Europe...Why I wouldn't go via MIA if I always save 200-300 euros on round trip to my destination, plus I frequently go out in Miami, why not...have a nice lunch and swim on South beach or Surfside, and come back to airport to continue my flight...Much better than to sit and wait for 6-7 hours on some cloudy miserable European airport or IST in January ( no more Ataturk who had soul)..Besides that, people who travel to Americas mostly have US visa, and transfer is not a problem for them..
DeleteThere are also passengers who doesn't need visa to enter USA
DeleteJU and AA already have an interline so they will extend it to include future MIA flights.
DeleteConnecting onto AA flights to Latin America won't be any different than transferring onto B6 flights in JFK (or AA in ORD). You still have to clear customs and drop off your bag, you get your final destination boarding pass in BEG. That said, some airports like BOS, ORD or LAX have special counters right after customs where you can drop off your bags. There is no need to drag them all the way to departures.
That said, when you are flying domestic to international in the US, your bags go through to your final destination. I don't know if this is the same with an international to international transfer via a US airport.
MIA will be popular for transfers simply because it is the main global hub for Central and South America. There are so many destinations that are offered from MIA that are not accessible from Europe.
Exactly, from MIA you can reach the smallest island on Caribbean, impossible from any European city..Also, few tears ago I flew to Guatemala city for some crazy deal, less than 150$ round trip..Or to Oaxaca, Cabo San Lucas, Cartagena etc, etc, low prices from MIA and frequent routes..For those destinations, and many others, you cannot find flight from Europe, and even if some existed, would cost tousands euros..
DeleteWhen could flights be launched realistically?
ReplyDeleteWinter 2024/25
DeleteNow we have official confirmation for Miami launch
ReplyDeleteWhere
DeleteMaybe read the article genius. Or you don't think Miami Airport is an official source.
DeleteThey confirmed plans, not the launch. Please read the title and the article. Genius.
DeleteThe price for us Greek passengers must be very convenient to prefer next summer season Air Serbia for our relatives in Maimi ( personaly I have in Orlando ). When we have 5 airlines flying daily from ATH to 7 destinations in the US in summer season....the price must be very " right" !
ReplyDeleteThis is for rich people who have properties in Florida not for Greek immigrants from Turkey.
DeleteAnon 11:53 Are you for real ???? What do you mean ?
DeleteSo anon 11:53 Serbs , Albanians or Montenegrins who might prefer this route are rich ??? Really ???
DeleteLepa Brena i (Lepi ) Boba will be happy!
DeleteThere is a high speed rail (Brightline) that connects Orlando to Miami and all major cities on the Florida east coast. It is an excellent product and time wise, when everything included, train is probably a better choice.
DeleteIn Europe Alicante next
ReplyDeleteDon’t bet on Israel right now…
ReplyDeleteActually demand is quite huge at the moment with few ways to get there.
DeleteMiami on BEG's departure board will be a nice sight :)
ReplyDeleteThat would leave central US and Texas as potential next destinations? California being a bit further off.
ReplyDeleteJU have stated they will focus on the East Coast for now. BOS and IAD come to mind as the possible next US destinations.
DeleteSomething tells me Serbian ambassador and politics are going to pick IAD as the next one.
DeleteNot necessarily. IAD does have a nice variety of international carriers. BOS would however nicely compliment JFK while also being a Jet Blue hub.
DeletePoliticians are not choosing destinations for JU. Miami was planned before covid but was put on hold for obvious reasons. IAD has a massive catchment area which goes beyond Washington DC. There is a reason why so many foreign carriers do so well over there.
DeleteBrena the Beautiful only can generate enough traffic to justify year round flights to MIA and FK.
ReplyDeleteFK???
DeleteHahaha
Would they have any luck in Cleveland? I know Belgrade to Cleveland was once a thing. Large Serbian, Slovenian, Croatian and Bosnian population making it easy to get to Ljubljana, Sarajevo or Zagreb and Cleveland only offers Aer Lingus to Dublin 4x weekly. Could reach alot of destinations going through Belgrade so would be of use to Americans as well or anyone going to Europe.
ReplyDeleteGood points.
DeleteEspecially since Cleveland is so poorly connected to Europe.
I think most of ex-YU diaspora that lives there has lost its connection with the motherland. The few that haven't are not enough to sustain non-stop flights. Also, Ohio's economy is not too hot right now so it makes you wonder how many people can even afford to fly back home.
DeleteThat said, JU could work on securing a code-share to both Cleveland and Columbus and more importantly it should work on it being an affordable deal, something they are not known for.
Connection to Cleveland is awfull. Flying to Chichago is bad layovers are 7-14 hours offered by JU . Better connection is through NY but this is serviced by AA subcontractor and flights get canceled all the time. 3 times my family flights where changed. Not to mentioned that flying through NY requires an airport change and the connections with AA is not to JFK. To Chichago by tickets just got rebooked by JU. Saturday flight landing at 7am and connecting to JU BEG flights at 23:00 … we try our best to take JU but every time we are stuck at airport for 9-15 hours or between we book the ticket and actually fly JU changes the dates so we have to fly on Saturday (ord) vs Friday (NY)
DeleteI wonder when and how Miami surpassed Jacksonville as FL’s largest city. I can’t imagine the need and enough passengers to support it. We’ll see. I know Emirates does well into MCO, and El Al did also, until flights stopped due to the war. Hopefully they will return. But, let’s hope the new service works.
Delete
