Zagreb Airport reopend for traffic following an almost ten-hour closure after a Cessna 525 CitationJet belonging to Croatian charter carrier Air Pannonia skidded off the runway this afternoon. The incident occurred at 15:21 local time on Sunday, with the airport reopening at 00:51 on Monday. The 27-year-old aircraft, registered 9A-JIM, arrived from Milan Linate Airport. It veered off the runway during landing and came to a stop on a grassy area at the runway’s edge. Airport emergency services responded immediately, however, the aircraft's removal took hours. As part of standard procedures following such events, Zagreb Airport was temporarily closed to all arriving and departing flights.
Air Pannonia confirmed that the jet was not carrying any passengers at the time of the incident and that there were no injuries. The founder of Air Pannonia, Miroslav Vlašić, said in a statement, "We provided our own private equipment to help remove the aircraft from the runway. One of the tires had burst, making it impossible to tow the plane, and Zagreb Airport doesn’t have the necessary equipment for such a situation. In fact, they even contacted Civil Protection, but they too lacked the required tools”. He added that it is unfair for his company to be blamed for the flight delays, stressing that the situation could have been resolved much sooner if the airport had the proper equipment available to handle such incidents.
Several Sunday afternoon flights scheduled to land at Zagreb Airport were diverted due to the incident. KLM’s service from Amsterdam and Air Serbia’s flight from Belgrade were rerouted to Ljubljana, while Lufthansa’s flight from Frankfurt and Ryanair’s from Rome were diverted to Vienna. Croatia Airlines’ service from Skopje landed in Zadar, as did Ryanair’s flights from Alicante and Weeze. Close to forty departures were cancelled. A Croatia Airlines flight from Barcelona, which took off with a two-hour delay on Sunday, diverted to Pula just after midnight on Monday.
Croatia Airlines, the airport’s main operator, has not issued any public statement regarding the incident or the status of its flights.
Some disurpitons are expected to run into late Monday morning.
Airport is still closed.
ReplyDeleteYep, long way to Zagreb for Joe Patroni :)
Delete4 hours…and still closed! How long does it take to remove 1 small plane????
DeleteAny news???
DeleteAirport is still closed. Huge lines at the airport for flight rebooking.
DeleteHEEEEEEEEELP
DeleteWe all hate that jet. Still waiting
DeletePegasus airlines sucks
DeleteWill this effect Pax Numbers because lots of flights got diverted
ReplyDeleteThoughts and prayers to all those involved in the accident
ReplyDeleteThe article says
Delete"Air Pannonia has confirmed that the jet was not carrying any passengers at the time of the incident and that there were no injuries."
OU has still not send official cancelations of flights to airports for the flights bound to ZAG
ReplyDeleteOU0301 from Dubrovnik to Zagreb has been cancelled we have been told
ReplyDeletePretty much all flights have been cancelled after 14:45
ReplyDeleteThis helps explain the need for two runways that can be operated at the same time at busy airports like Zagreb; or at least redundant runways where one runway can operate while the other one is closed for incident like this one.
ReplyDelete"Busy airports like Zagreb" LOL
DeleteStill at the Airport in a huge lane that i. not moving, waiting for the 1 only open croatian airlines booth. no official information yet from any airport personel.
ReplyDeleteDo you think it will depart today? I think it will be cancled
DeleteWill this be resolved over night or can it affect flights on the next day as well?
ReplyDeleteCriminal from the airport to be honest. 8 hours to remove a plane that hasn't crashed at all.
ReplyDeleteQuite insane
DeleteI have a ticket for JU604 for today. We are still in the airport. We embarked in 20.30, and now we got out of the plane because we didn't get approval to take off.
ReplyDeleteSo they let you board after the accident already happened?
DeleteHope it gets resolved quick and you get to leave!
DeleteYes, at that point it was over 5 hours after the accident had occurred.
DeleteZAG is currently listed as #1 on global airport disruption list at flightradar 24. This affects all airlines, both arrivals and departures.
DeleteWe still haven’t received any information from Split to Zagreb.
DeleteOur scheduled departure was at 20:20.
Flight JU602 (departed BEG at 14.59) was diverted to Ljubljana
DeleteYes, JU602 has been diverted to Ljubljana, but our JU604 has been cancelled after several hours of waiting at the airport :(
DeleteNeed to construct an inserted runway ASAP!
ReplyDeleteIt is always and everywhere such slow procedure. CAA inspection has to make observations and reports. Maintenance has to provide solution how to move aircraft without tyre. You can not push it to a side like old golf. For now aircraft damage is minimal but moving it without tyre it starts to be calculated in 5-6 zeroes of eur.. so do it blame stupid airport who didn’t call local towing company with truck to clear the runway.
ReplyDeleteBigger problem is bad organisation of local carrier but that also can be problematic for them as nobody, probably still, doesn’t know when it will be are. If. It flying with CA you are even in deeper problem as due to savings, most of the companies do not have their representatives and live airport without any info or even what to do.with passengers. Dear passenger, check your rights for reimbursement due to cancellation or long delay….
How much longer can this take? Will they work on it overnight?
DeleteIs any valid source to know when the airport will be open?
ReplyDeleteLatest NOTAM issued at 22:00 local time notes that runway remains closed. No estimated time of opening.
DeleteThank you. I will keep eye open also there.
DeleteAny INFO
DeleteEurocontrol has this:
DeleteLDZA (Zagreb)
Arrivals zero-rated due to debris on the runway until 09 0000 UTC.
Any news on the flight to London Stansted?
ReplyDeleteThe airport air traffic is still closed so no plane has departed since after the accident
DeleteNow it says delayed to 1AM but the airport is still closed to traffic
DeleteLondon Stansted Website says expected to arrive at 02:57am
DeleteFlight cancelled until tomorrow morning.
DeleteIt has really been a mess with no public notices, no information and long lines of customers waiting for their turn just to hear that they have to rezerve a hotel and maybe come tomorrow morning to check the situation. All today’s flight by Croatia Airlines just now has been confirmed to be cancelled, they were still doing checkins for late hour flights just minutes ago. I hope only that tomorrow isn’t a total mess but judging by today standards and the number of passengers expected, I’m not very hopeful.
ReplyDeleteWhat is most shocking is Croatia Airlines. Not a single word on ANY of their social media, website... they deserve to go bankrupt.
ReplyDeleteHow can a small plane skidding off the runway cause such grief? Balkanmania Bet nobody in authority at OU is in ZAG tonight sorting out problems at there hub.
ReplyDeleteNot a word from the airport. It took them three hours to post "CLOSED" on their website.
ReplyDeleteZagreb Airport could not bother issuing any information but good thing they had the time to post on their social media about duty free discounts.
ReplyDeleteZagreb Airport put notices on Facebook that the Airport was closed!
DeleteThe response and public communication from ZAG and OU has been absolutely shocking.
ReplyDeleteWe are waiting in Pisa for a Ryanair airplane from Zargrab to Pisa. And on the info it says closed for boarding, delayed and we are going home with 2 kids
ReplyDeleteHave you had any update or information from Ryanair?
DeleteJust wondering, can OU divert all flights to LJU and continue operating from there with the aircrafts which were not in Zagreb at time of accident until it gets resolved?
ReplyDeleteIt would be a mortal sin to divert planes to LJU and operate flights from there, thereby increasing traffic at LJU. Unheard of. LOL
DeleteThe last pargraph of the article, I am lost for words

Sums up Croatia!

ReplyDeleteCriminal from Zagreb airport. In contrast Ljubljana with 5 times less traffic has one of the best rescue centers in Europe
They are sending the equipment from Osijek! Unbelievable.
DeleteThis is what you can find on Croatia Airlines social media as their last post...
ReplyDeleteSvaki pogled kroz prozor aviona priča svoju priču.
Nekad je to oproštaj, nekad početak... a najčešće – čista radost putovanja. ✈️❤️
#CroatiaAirlines #HappyTravels
They are unbothered. Jasmin is sleeping.
DeleteI'm waiting flight Croatia OU 375 from Barcelona, it departed, but according to information on Eurocontrol (LDZA (Zagreb) - Arrivals zero-rated due to debris on the runway until 09 0000 UTC). Now I don't know where to go to pick friend...
ReplyDeleteAccording to Flightradar it’s descending near Pula… so it seems it’s landing there
DeleteThanks, I also noticed now.
DeleteIt says in text it has diverted to PUY.
DeleteThis is the only site that has any updates. I am surprised that mainstream Croatian media does not think that its capital city airport being closed for more than 8 hours is worth a follow up or any article.
ReplyDeleteThis is why all airports on the Balkans need proper equipment , invests, constant modernization and following the world wide trends. Also this is example why also all airports here need to have 2 runways, if this happend even in my country Macedonia it would be the same scenario , no proper equipment to move a small plane such as minivan size and all airport get blocked with hours....
ReplyDeleteThis has got to be one of the worst responses to an 'emergency' situation I have seen in a while.
ReplyDeleteI had one of their Cessnas land in my airport multiple times. They would always come down like a rocket flying at very high speeds and only slowing down at the last minute. Once they flew visual approach and made extremely late final turn. The authorities must investigate their SOP or something.
ReplyDeleteI guess ZAG doesn't have a towbar for Cessna Citation as biz jet usually taxies out. Air Pannonia needs to bring one from Osijek. All they need is a crane truck that will lift the aircraft. Aren't there such contractors in the construction industry in Zagreb? It's quite nonsense to blame on Air Pannonia, burst tyre is fairly common incident occurs on regular basis.
ReplyDeleteFinally reopened. Thank you for all the updates ex-yu!
ReplyDelete+1
DeleteAirport seems open. CDG-PUY (Originally CDG-ZAG) is diverting to ZAG as per flightradar24.
ReplyDeleteFirst sentence of the article :D
Delete"Zagreb Airport reopend for traffic following an almost ten-hour closure after a Cessna 525 CitationJet belonging to Croatian charter carrier Air Pannonia skidded off the runway this afternoon. "
Is it Open?

DeleteHas anyone on the ryan air one to stansted, who left the airport managed to get accommodation??
DeleteJust wondering, so a question for the pros here, which ex-yu airports would handle this scenario the same, which do you think would take even longer, which very fast and efficient? Hope the other ex-yu airports are looking into this and evaluating their respective readyness in event of a similar accident.
